GTX980Ti SLI is much better performance and enough video memory, plus GTX980Ti Classified SLI, one Classy is similar as GTX1080 reference.
Why I can't find GTX980Ti Classified for 380-400$ but in Europe. I would bought now instantly without thinking.
Yes I would get less performance than GTX1080 Hybrid, but for half price.

Performance wise, a single 980Ti classified @1525/8120MHz will be within 15% of a 1080 at 2100MHz. I compared my watercooled 980 Ti classified rig to the best 1080 rig's score with comparable specs on 3Dmark firestrike. It's not large performance increase. I'm certain there are games that scale better, but 3Dmark is a decent enough gauge for average difference. That is subject to driver maturity as well.

Go SLI for massive gains unless the games that you play mostly don't support SLI - I'm not going SLI for that reason, and am stepping up my 980 Ti classified to a 1080 blower edition (going under water so no need to pay more for a fan I won't use).

The 980 ti sli will be better performance wise. I had 980 ti hybrids in sli and sadly at 4k the Witcher 3 I still had to turn down ambient inclusion a tick to get a rock solid 60+ fps, but no matter it was still amazing. I'm just not a fan of SLI. I noticed microstuttering even with my Gsync monitor. I would go a single 1080. I'm in the same pickle and I'm a 1440p gamer and the 1080 seems to be the perfect 1440 card.

SLI for videogames is often complicated. You wan't loose anything in next months, if I were in your position, I would wait for the 1080 Ti and save the money. - If you like to benchmark, go for a second 980 Ti. Kingpin rules the hall of fame.

it's not one of your two options, but i'm with carbonshape - imho, i think the best course is to wait for a bit. i don't think the amount of performance gain is worth the investment (but it certainly could be for you depending on what you use the card(s) for).

980ti SLI will smoke a single 1080 but there are hardware concerns. Is your power supply big enough? Any add in cards? How many lanes does your processor support to get full 16x on both cards. Some people say they cant tell a difference between 8x and 16x but on a few builds I have had, 16x makes a world of difference.

This might help you with finding the diff between a 980 ti/old titan x and a 1080 ftw/FE

Depends on the games you play and your power supply.  If they support SLI, go for the 2nd Ti.  if not, a single 1080 would work.

    Lots of good advice above.

If you just got to make a change 1080 would use less power and make less heat, single card has some simplicity advantages.

We really need the details of your build; including - Monitor(s), CPU, MB, RAM, PSU, Case, fans, games you play ......

I'd wait for the next round of Ti

You can benchmark the cards and see a difference; but playing games, will you see a difference - that is the question
