Or wait for AMD Zen and see if it's good. Or if it makes Intel either lower prices or release a CPU with real performance gains that's been stagnant for them for years....

Faster memory can increase FPS for games.

Here's a quick test I did, before upgrading to X99, comparing 1600MHz DDR3 with 2400MHz DDR3.

3570K @4.6GHz
Single GTX 1080
16GB DDR3 @2400MHz (used same memory for 1600MHz)

Overall DDR4 is Faster then DDR3 though. Both the Z170 and X99 use DDR4 Memory.

If I do upgrade I probably will go X99 or whatever it will be replaced by.  I guess I caught upgrade fever and I need to restrain myself a little bit.  If I suddenly post pics of a new system, well, then I guess the little upgrade devil beat up the not upgrade angel.

How the heck are you guys seeing bottlenecks on these modern systems?! I'm still on X58 and I never see CPU go over 30% in any games. Do the extra two cores really make that much of a difference, even on this super old architecture? I've been wanting to upgrade for the past two years but I've just never been able to justify it every time Intel comes out with a new chipset and it's only a bit faster. Granted, I have to run my SSD's in RAID to see comparable read/write speed to SATA 3.

I still find myself eyeing up a new X99 board but I just can't justify spending that much money for a bump in performance.

This. I'm currently running an x58 as well, in my case a 6-core Xeon 5680 running at between 3.8ghz and 4.1ghz, depending on whether I feel like a reboot. I'm running a 1080 SC video card, and I don't really feel that limited in any of the games I play. I'm currently in the process of a rebuild around the X99 FTW K and Core i7 6900 with 32gb of DDR4 3200 RAM, but it's more because I just want to than because I can actually justify it for lack of sufficient performance. Fact is, if I'm honest with myself, my X58 Xeon system is running just fine. I just want to rebuild it, and once I've wrapped my mind around something that I want to do, I'm probably going to do it. I'll see a few fps difference in games, but is that worth all the money I'll spend? Probably not. Still doing it, though.

I think the OP's machine is still almost certainly way more than fine for game playing. Sure, he won't make it into benchmark HOF with it, but who really cares? If he cared, he'd already have his answer.

The only question for the OP is this: is it worth the money to you? If it is, then knock yourself out. I chose X99 and an 8-core i7 6900 because I've wrapped my mind around the idea that my machine will be a monster. That idea is apparently something I'm willing to pay for. Are you?

I went from an i5 4690k with a gtx 780 to what's in the sig just this year. I upgraded the power supply, then I upgraded the cpu and the case, added the water cooler, then got the 1080, then upgraded the fans in preparation for the second 1080, the finally got the hb Sli bridge. You see how this all came about, typical case of upgrade fever trying to eliminate the weak spots. If I do go x99 I think I am going to settle for a 6850k, not sure yet though. That 6900k looks tempting but it's like another 200 bucks for that thing, right?

I bought some items from microcenter last saturday, 6900k was 1k even, they didn't have 5930k or 5960x 6850k was about $600. I have some benchmarks below that would how you performance you might get with 2 1080s after taking about 25-30% off or so.

Hehe, well you're playing computer whack a mole aren't you? Admit it though: the single thing you've done, by far, which gave you the performance you see now vs. the performance you saw a year ago was getting the first 1080. Even going SLI 1080 gives you a diminishing return. Upgrading the cpu gives an even more diminished return. Is it still faster? Yes. Is any single $650 you spent so far even in the same ballpark in terms of upgraded performance as that first 1080? No way. Still, there's absolutely nothing wrong with spending money on your computer if you have the money, and it's what you like to do.

I always mention that some people will spend thousands of dollars raising their pickup truck by six inches. Seems like a complete waste to me, but hey, it's their money, and they're just more into raised trucks than I am. They probably see the money I dump into my computer every few years and think what a waste, I could have added a chrome exhaust pipe for that money...

I was going to go for the i7 6850 as well. It seemed like the sweet spot in terms of price/performance for the new i7 broadwell-E line. Then I got to thinking (that was my first mistake) that between the motherboard ($240 or so for the FTW K on sale a week or so ago) and the RAM ($239 for DDR4 3200 CL 14 off Newegg) and the i7 6850 being a $600 chip, that's already like an $1100 rebuild cost. I'm getting a great deal from a friend of mine on an i7 6900 for only a couple hundred more than I'd pay for the 6850. So the logic here is: what's another $200 in that large outlay for the this project to take the machine from being beastly (with a 6850) to truly monstrous (with a 6900)? I suppose I could make the same argument to jack it up to a 6950, but you gotta draw the line somewhere, right? LOL.

Just get the X99, a 6850 or 6900, and be done with it. Then cut your credit card in half, hand it over to a trusted friend, or whatever you gotta do to stop the spending. :-)

I think 6850k is a good choice i keep thinking about trying to downgrade to the 6850k myself if microcenter will allow. 64 gb of ram will be future proof for about 5 years or so.

Unless you have some professional grade software that can actually use 64 GB of RAM - buy 32 and save yourself a lot of $$$

16 GB will do for most systems quite well.

6850 will be awesome. Had I not gotten this great deal on the 6900, that would have been my choice. As far as RAM quantity goes, I've been doing fine with 12gb in my current machine, so I reckon 32gb will be pretty future proof for me over the next few years. I could have gone 64gb, but I wanted to put the money into really fast RAM, and 64gb of that fast of RAM would have broken the budget even worse than it already is.

Grats on the new machine Cyberdimensions! Especially with 1080 FTW SLI I'm sure that machine will rock the world. I've only got a single 1080 SC for now, but I'm leaving open the idea of picking up another eventually. What's funny is that going back to at least the 8800gtx that I bought in like 2008 or 2009 or whenever it came out, I keep thinking I'll get one card now and then pick up another for SLI in the future. Last year I thought the same thing when I picked up the 960 SSC, and now the same idea with the 1080. What's funny is that by the time it comes to actually do it, I upgrade to a faster single card instead. So who knows if I'll ever go 1080 SLI or not? Kinda depends on what's current by the time I've accumulated the funds.

Viper453, I am curious, do you use watercooling and if so, what type and how hot is that 6900k running at 4.3 Ghz?  I am guessing the smaller 6 core should run a bit cooler.  And what voltage are you pumping into this thing to get it stable at that speed, 1.3?

The 64 GB thing...well, it's just one of those things, if you go crazy you might as well add some more crazy to the sauce.

I figured the 6850 was the sweet spot in the line up, especially since I will be gaming with this thing too and hence there's no need for a 6900 or 6950k

Parts should be here by the end of the week, wish me luck!

I use a h115i it gets around 90 under load, I use 1.37 volts. hopefully a better water cooler kit will come out with a 5 year warranty on it.

If you used the Swiftech AIO coolers you could easily extend it with an additional radiator.

Have you considered adding two more fans to the back side of the H115i radiator and turning it into a push-pull unit? That would probably improve your cooling quite a bit. I was able to turn half of my Swiftech radiator into push-pull (the other half has the integrated pump/reservoir and a fan won't fit there) and the airflow through that side is noticeably stronger. It's PWM, of the exact same model as the two fans that came with the unit, and plugs into the same PWM controller, so they all work together. It's something you might look into.

90C under load?  Wow..... when you say under load, is that gaming or running Prime 95 or some of those other CPU intensive torture tests?  Makes me wonder if my little H100i v2 is up to the task?  Also, what power supply do you use?  I have an Corsair HX850i which currently seems to have no problem keeping up with the current system.  I wasn't aware of how much more power hungry the 6850k actually is, especially when overclocked.  I went to the Coolermaster PSU configurator thing and it spit out that a 840 W power supply is a good idea with system load being around 760 Watts.  This was with my exact system configured and using 4.4 Ghz and 1.3V (which is what Tom's Hardware used) and using 70% TDP for CPU usage (since games usually don't use more than 50 to 70% cpu power.  I am thinking my HX850i should be enough, it's Platinum Plus too.

in prime95 yeah. i am using 3 fans on the h115i atm i did put some extra compound on the cpu, 8 cores is another anime vs a 4 core.

I am upgrading to a H115.  I am curious how you use 3 fans on that thing?  I can see 4 fans in push/pull in a gigantic case that has enough clearance between the fans and the motherboard, but I am a bit puzzled about what a 3 fan setup looks like.

hmm I get 88c with prime95 at 4ghz might need to get another cooler. I order a Swiftech H320 X2 AIO CPU Cooler and will exchange the h115i.

I'm happy to hear this. That should be a very capable unit. I'm using the older 2x120 H220-x and so far it's been perfectly fine cooling both my Xeon 5680@4.1ghz and my overclocked 1080 SC. Granted, I haven't tried running stress tests on both the gpu and cpu at the same time, but at least for benchmarks and games my temps aren't going above 50C. For folding, or Prime95, I don't know how well it will work since adding the gpu to the loop.

It looks like you could easily at at least one fan to the H320 and make at least 1/3 of the radiator into push-pull, and possibly two, depending on whether that bit of reservoir/pump shroud blocks that middle space. The Swiftech PWM fans that this system uses are $15 shipped on Amazon, and there's plenty of room on the Swiftech PWM controller to plug them in and let them all work together.

Here's a quick pic of my Swiftech H220-x with a 3rd Swiftech PWM fan screwed on to the backside of the radiator, and plugged in to the same PWM controller as the two that came with the unit. Any space in a case that had enough room to tolerate the depth of the pump/reservoir unit should be able to accomodate the depth of an additional 1 or 2 fans. Notice the pump/reservoir unit on that side of the radiator actually sticks out more than the extra fan does.

The pump on the unit was broke had to get an ek 240 unit microcenter doesn't have the best cooler but they are 30 minutes away. will test later on today.
