I don't do these kinds of threads often, I just thought I'd share this awesome song I found. Plus it is the second time I'm trying to embed a youtube video, hopefully it works this time. "Closer to Death" is also awesome but I can't find an official music video, I don't want to prop up fan-made videos or stills with soundtrack. Give that a listen if you like, I like the vocals in the chorus, it's catchy. Just so you know, I grew up listening to pop, didn't get into rock until the end of high-school, so the effect is there.

The music doesn't match her voice.

It wasn't expected, yeah, but I tend to see different something to be encouraged. I figure those used to either just the voice or just the music might be put off.

OK... I like it. Frankly the music is pretty good, and yes not what I was expecting out of her. But this is enjoyable. I see this as one of those tracks that will be in my favorites...

Does she do any screaming? I like it when girl rock singers mix in a little screaming like flyleaf or in this moment. Other than that not to shabby.

Honestly, Unsun just looks like daddy war bucks paid a band to play for his daughter. The music just doesn't mix. willem445 Does she do any screaming? I like it when girl rock singers mix in a little screaming like flyleaf or in this moment. Other than that not to shabby. Flyleaf is interesting.

Afterburner, have you checked out 'Closer to Death' yet? "Whispers" song came out in 2008, but I would have never heard them here on San Diego's radio stations, both popular alternative and hard rock stations are somewhat conservative. 91X is the alt station here and the music of unsun is too hard, while Rock105.3 isn't privy to the voice. Goofy part is the local pop stations might like the voice, but not the music. Once, just once, local top40 Channe933 actually played Metallica's "Hero of the Day"-- but the version with the SF symphony. To hear the DJ announced them in the same sentence as Christina Aguilera, I was impressed. I haven't listened to that many tracks (five out of twelve I like), but so far no screaming via unsun, it is all very melodic; that said of those I've heard by Flyleaf, I only know one that has screaming in it, "I'm so sick". Generally not into what I call "growl rock", Hatebreed and Lamb of God is my limit for male singers, Cradle of Filth for female. Having the music and voice of Unsun is very refreshing in comparison to what I normally listen to.

Never liked girls screamers. But if they had a Male backup growler like the lead singer from BOO then that would fit in really well I think. Bands on Pandora, cool. Older track from Lacuna coil, but another great female vocalist for metal with good male backups.

Im So Sick by Flyleaf is the most notable one but there are others that have slight screaming in them. I cant remember the names though. @Billyash- OMG its like the rock version of rihanna! I love this song... You may also want to check out Within Temptation. They are kind of similar to unsun but imo they sound better. I spent like 3 days on time searching rock/metal bands with girl singers. lol

Maybe I'm snobish about this kind of stuff but I've listened to a lot of heavy stuff of many genres and really this seems pretty unrefined and generic actually. This style goes back to the 90's so I can't say her voice combined with the music was at all surprising. Still a lot better than pop stuff :P

This style goes back to the 90's so I can't say her voice combined with the music was at all surprising. Still a lot better than pop stuff :P Not at all snobish, rather, keep in mind: My music listening tendencies are very similar to game tendencies where I rarely get into new stuff because I love the older stuff I grew up with so much, if anything I'm extremely picky such that every new addition is worth keeping without ever getting over. Many trends and fads may pass me by and by the time I get into something, it has been over done ad nauseam. But it is new to me, so guess how I react to it? ![](https://forums.evga.com/upfiles/smiley/s2.gif) I only got into looking for new music about a weeks ago after hearing a song on a TV at the store, it was In this Moment "Beautiful Tragedy": from there I went to Sirenia "Lost in Life" which had an 80's sound which I got over pretty quick, and then Sirenia - "The Path to decay" which is nicer, but I've growed used to guitar that follow vocal: I don't write or play music, but I hope those of that might understand, if you take someone's vocals as they sing and do an instrumental version with the same pitches and tone, I call that following; not really into that, it was common of 80's music of many genres. The reason why I like Slipknot is because vocals don't follow music, best exmaple is, edit: I meant "Pulse of the Maggots", but I can't embed due to language. They seem to have music and vocals on tangents-- for this same reason a friend of mine doesn't like Slipknot. He says it affects his ability to pay attention to it. Of course he grew up on Snoop Dog and Nirvana, while I grew up on Maria Carey and Nirvana-- we both got into rock about the same time in the late 90's. All the while Unsun's Whisper was on the right column highlighted as featured, wihch I concluded as paid advertisement and wasn't interested. I guess I didn't want to be affected by "sex sells' as I was aware of the circumstance of the vocalists from these bands; every new song I clicked I'd shrink the browser so I'm only judging the audio. I'm sure we all do it, but I sing to myself in the shower and make up songs, as I listened to "Whisper" it seemed to match what I do, so it is an extension of me even though I don't have that talent yet. Might sound cheessy but there it is. I didn't turn on the radio to listen to music until 1991, I had respect for a few 80's songs, namely those I'd hear in movies or what my mom listened to, but I don't regard it as my decade. 90's in my youth/teens and 00's are my 20's stage, so music across those decades matter to me. Past four years I have not been getting into as much new music. 80% of my mp3 collection is from 2008 on back. It's not boredom, I don't hate any particular genre, just lack of exposure but without incentive to change that. For instance, I'm not into all that Unsun does, not all of it has the synergy effect the first few I heard have; some the voice seems off key.

Having the music and voice of Unsun is very refreshing in comparison to what I normally listen to. Yeah I did. The second time around on the albums I get more into them. You can hear a pattern and she does a good job with what she is good at... I remember when 91X first hit the airwaves and at the time took over (Crusty memory here) 94.7 (Top 40) and was pretty decent their first year... Then fell off to the "Corporate ways" of radio... I know Queensryche (Two of the main fellas live about 28 minutes from me) and yes, for real, Merle Haggard (Let's just say I am really familiar with his house boat on Lake Shasta ![](https://forums.evga.com/upfiles/smiley/s4.gif) )... Grew up on pretty much everything. My parents never restricted my music taste. I really dig some Blues, all the way to acid Rock... I have seen a good amount of concerts, and miss the days at the Green... Three days of amazing music, fun times and no sleep... My first "Grab" in a song is the music. To heck with the lyrics... If the instruments are week, a voice or voices can only get so far before they are a one hit wonder... My closest friends hate me when it comes to music. I can listen to a song twice, and tell them if it is a top 100 hit or not. I am 71-0 so far... And fall in love with most that never has a chance, place it in my favorites.. And rock the house during parties, they get into a song or two, go looking for it a few days after the party. They can never find the music... Pisses them off... hahahaha

Ahh yes, Kittie, first heard of them in March 2000 I think with "Charlotte", never saw this music video until today: Rarely came on radio, took forever to get it on cassette. I liked a couple songs, but they were the first lead female hard rock band for me, and for along time. Of course there was Hole, and others in the alternative sector, but you know.

Veruca Salt +1! When I worked at a CD shop we had L7 do an in-store. Great gals with lots of crazy stories from many miles on the road. Kinda rough around the edges - just the way I like my ladies! Here's a massively under-rated singer - Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Her voice flat out kills. Check out the video for "Gold Lion", it's amazing (and fun for you pyromaniacs out there): http://youtu.be/jMMkP_ofpXg Her voice, appearance, and stage presence are extremely distinctive - based on this video ("Maps"), she should start acting in film: http://youtu.be/wR9GiA7Hg_A And then, she digs up all the best elements of the 80's and packs 'em into 1 video - the clothes, the sound, the style - for "Zero": http://youtu.be/pmGNo8RL5kM She shifts her attention to a punk/blues sound to wrap things up - and the attitude comes with it, in "Date with the Night": http://youtu.be/NGNHQKeoSGY

Got into rock in the middle 90's and some of the first female lead bands I got into was Garbage and Cranberries, later on Tori Amos (while she's not a rocker, a few songs got my attention). None set a tone or example, or maybe I wasn't thinking like that back then. I didn't know too many fellow rockers in school (and the ones I met in college were purists and we had nothing else in common), they had stereotypes I didn't want to associate with. Might be a bit light for this thread "Strange Little Girl" by Tori Amos.

lehpron - I always have a little room on my CD shelf (USB stick?) for great female vocalists - even if they aren't necessarily playing "hard" rock. Those you mentioned are excellent - and for the last couple of years I've been playing Regina Spektor and Florence & the Machine. I also like girl-rock with a Cockney accent - Kate Nash. And when I have insomnia, Julee Cruise's "Floating" album. Her music was used as theme music in David Lynch's "Twin Peaks" TV series and she sang in the nightclub on the show.
