Hi-

I built a rig @ the end of November.  Put in a eVGA GTX 670 (2GB) and all was well.  Then around Christmas I started getting Red or Green lines in the display.  I RMA'd the GTX 670 thinking the card was faulty.  I got a GTX 680 as the replacement - nice upgrade.  But I've still got the same problem with the replacement card.  So - trying to really work this out - I RMA'd the Asus MB and still have the same problem.

Most of the time it boots to 800x600 and can't detect the card type at all.  I've gone through safemode - removed added it, cleaned the drivers - etc.

But the real kicker is that I don't think it's windows at all....as I get the Green lines in the BIOS post screen as well as the BIOS setup screen.  Windows isn't even running!  It's really unusable.  I've replaced everything but the RAM, CPU and PSU.  But in replacing both the card and motherboard - I'm shocked I've still got the same problem.

Asus P8Z77-V Pro
Intel i7-3770k
GSKill 2x8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
eVGA GTX 680
Seasonic 750W PSU

Could the problem be with the power supply?  It has the correct 2x4pin connectors for the end of the GTX card.  And like I said - I never had a problem for the first month I had the system.  Unfortunately - I don't have anything else I can swap components like this with.  A couple of 5-6 year old Dell Optiplexes laying around doesn't help with troubleshooting.

If you have multiple PCI-E power cables from the PSU try those instead of the ones you're currently using.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

The Seasonic PSU that I've got only has the one 8-pin connector to the side of the PSU that splits out to the 2x4pin separate connectors.  I just have one set.  I wish I had another PSU to swap out - but I'm losing faith that anything I can do will fix it after already doing 2 RMAs for different components.
    Thanks.

Please look on the back of your powersupply and post the -exact- model number

The GTX 680 -requires- (2) 6pin PCIE connectors

Your description of (2) 4pin connectors, would appear to imply your have not connected the power to the videocard correctly.

This would result in -exactly- the problems you are having

    Seasonic Power Supply
Model: SS-750KM Active PFC F3 (Ball bearing fan) (X-750)

Yes, I was incorrect - they are 2x6-pin connectors.  I was typing from memory w/o pulling the side of the case off.  Being lazy I guess.

I have two connections available for the 16-pin connector to the actual PSU itself. I've swapped it back and forth to either of them.  I've moved the 2x6-pin connectors back and forth to both positions - that doesn't affect it either.

The system ran fine for a month.  I ran benchmarks, tests - it all looked great until the end of December.  I've not been able to use it since then as I've been doing RMAs and have had the system pulled apart.   It took me an hour yesterday to tear out the Asus MB and replace it and get the CPU back in.  I've moved the GTX 680 to the middle PCI-E slot as it's also a 16x and still have the same problems.

Yes, that looks correct.  I don't have the other set of PCI-E cables that it shows that came with it - or I would swap them out to see if the cable somehow has a short with it.  AFAIK - the PSU should be pretty on the money and provide nice clean power.

Thanks for your response.  I would be interested in getting another card and this time have someone do a 24-hour burn in.  I think the chances of having 2 bad cards is pretty rare - but possible.  Do I need to go through the normal RMA process again or how do I RMA a card for the "second" time?

I am very confused about your description of hooking up the power cables to the PSU...
    The connections are -clearly- labled

Have you tried using the "Normal" switch on the PSU?

The picture from NewEgg shows a bit diff connector layout than what I've got.  However the model # all matches up.  Not sure if Newegg has the right picture or an outdated one.

The PSU has two 12-pin connectors labeled for PCI-E use.  I've tried the cable in both.

My PSU does NOT have a "normal or hybrid" switch on the inside.  Just the normal I/O switch on the back.

I took some pics to help show what's going on.

This one shows what the display looks like with the green lines.

Well, I went all the way.  I'm at my office and went down the hallway, grabbed a brand new Dell P2412H monitor out of the box, literally, and plugged in all new cables from the shipping box and cabled up DVI.

Still get the same green artifacts as shown in on of the pics above.

Do you have another video card(any brand) you can borrow and see if you still get the green lines?

It's either your CPU's IGP interfering or a defective card. Disable IGP and try again or test the card in another machine to see if you can replicate the issue.

Thanks everyone for the help.  I finally tracked down a diff video card and put in a ATI 5700 series card into this same PCI-E slot and it boots up and shows video just fine.  So I probably didn't even need to replace the Asus motherboard.  I think I just got a bad replacement RMA card.  I couldn't reverse the test as the box I took the ATI 5700 series card from only had 1x6-pin power cord and the GTX 680 needs two...so I couldn't try it out - but at least I've eliminated it being a motherboard problem and hopefully a power one.  (The ATI 5700 only requires one 6-pin connector so I know it's not a true test of the PSU being a problem).

Anyway - one of the EVGA support reps is issuing me another card and is going to request the tech bench to do a 24-hour burn in before sending it to me.

I'll post more information after I get the next card....keeping fingers crossed.

Can you PM me the info on the RMA?  I can't send you a PM since I don't have enough posts.  I'm just curious as to the timing of when to expect the replacement card and when the burn-in test will be done.

    Thanks,

    Hey there JamesL-

Can you check on the burn-in status and the RMA?  I logged on to my account and it shows that EVGA has received the 2nd card - the GTX 680 as of yesterday 2/18.  Shipping status for the new card says pending.  Have they done the burn in yet - or is it being done now?  I'd like to get this before the weekend - is that possible?

    thx

I do love EVGA's CS. My next card will definitely be a EVGA. Is it possible to SLI this MSI 660Ti with a EVGA 660Ti? (As long as they are both the 2GB model).

    My Laptop (GE63VR-7RF):
    -7700HQ.
    -16GB RAM.
    -GTX 1070.
    -128GB SSD.
    -1X 1TB 7200 spinny drive.

It looks like the VRAM has failed on your video card. Time to apply for an RMA replacement.
