My wife's grocery getter, PT Cruiser Turbo GT air intake hose split. After pricing a new one it is cheaper to go with an aftermarket air filter system. They claim to give extra horse power and better fuel economy. Are the  claims legit or should I get the original Mopar part?  http://www.amazon.com/Chrysler-Cruiser-Intake-Sr-cr2-Filter1/dp/B016R1TPVA

It will give more horsepower and better airflow if you had welded the original shut.

They do help performance slightly, but nothing you will ever actually notice. It is a marketing gimmick. In the end, it's still a Pt cruiser. ;-)

Get the original part. Exposed air filters under the hood = hot air intakes.

Thanks for response. Yes it is her grocery getter and she loves it. Would be surprised though. Will do 170mph with an unlocked chip. Been a good reliable car bought new in 2003.

That's true depending on where it is installed.

Well I decided to order the kit. After some research, turns out that the factory air cleaner is quite crappy for this car. Talked to a few PT owners on forum and they swear by them.  I will let you guys know how things go when I get the part in a week or so.

It is not just "a PT Cruiser". It has the same 2.4L turbo charged 4 as the SRT-4, of which I have owned two. That motor responds very well to mods.

I would definitely get the Cold Air Intake. You will not only get more air into the turbo, you will get cooler air if you go with the full intake instead of the short ram.

Well after a long wait I finally got the part. This particular one was very poorly made and the instructions on how to mount the brackets were non existent. The Whole kit was very crappy. I decided to send it back and put new original part back on.
