The PCI-Express 3.0 standard was released four years after 2.0. It is now 6 years since 3.0 was introduced and it is about time we see a continuation named 4.0. With the availability of new connection standards like M.2 or U.2, the push for the higher bandwidth is finally reaching PCI devices.

PCI-SIG already planning PCIe 5.0

Although PCIe 4.0 is not released yet, PCI special group is already looking forward to bringing PCIe 5.0 devices to the market. Meanwhile, the PCIe 4.0 standard would double the data rate from 3.0’s 8 GT/s to 16 GT/s. Of course this does not mean graphics cards will be twice as fast. It means that we could at least get rid of the SLI bridges.

I don't get why Nvidia has a SLI bridge but AMD hasn't has a bridge in 3 years.
Anyone care to fill me in?

Faster PCIe sounds great for potential storage options. We got new DDR4, GDDR5x, HBM, and now pcie 4 coming up, its a good time for PCs.

I thought that much of the "issue" with PCIe was the lanes (or lack thereof) which was one of the selling points for the higher X99 cpus...  So does a faster PCIe transfer speed negate the need for more lanes?  i.e a GPU that's PCIe 3.0 running at x8 currently would only need x4 on 4.0 so you can use the other 4 lanes for a SSD or other storage?

I believe so. PCIe 3.0 x8 is the same as PCIe 2.0 x16 in terms of throughput AFAIK.

    I expected that, I read before 1-2 years about PCI-E 4.0.
Maximus X Extreme for Coffee Lake/Cannon Lake or Rampage 6 Extreme will have PCI-E 4.0 probably.

To make a PCI Express 4 would require new motherboards with new chipsets. Intel usually would be the company to lead the industry to adoption. Looks like they've shown off an item at their developer forum in San Francisco:

It could also be a reason why NVIDIA isn't pushing too hard for multi-GPU support.

it would also make NVlink not necessary for desktop...because PCIe 4.0 will do

That's pretty much it right there. When PCIE4 comes out, might change the way SLI/Xfire would function. It might be needed anymore.

The PCI Express 4.0 socket is said to deliver at least 300W of power but according to reports, it was suggested that higher power options could be made available, meaning we could see up to 500W of power deliverable via the socket. Essentially, PCIe 4.0 could quite comfortably power something like a GTX 1080 without a power cable.
While these new sockets might mean less cables to GPUs themselves, it likely means we will need some additional power connections on the motherboards themselves, so you will still get some use out of your modular PCI cable set.

I still miss mine. In fact the x58 classified is being used by the wife. I love my x79 tho. I am in no rush to upgrade.

Its nice to see standards progressing. Now if only someone could light a fire under Intel's butt...

Re: PCIe Expresss 4 comes next year 2016/08/23 18:31:44 (permalink)
Even if Intel decide to improve performance of their processors they need to longer period between generations and bigger improvement only could arrive with second generation for 16-18 months. Nothing earlier.
But anyway people will be angry if Intel i7-6700K on Maximus VIII Extreme lose from AMD Zen.
I talk to people don't look 6 months in future, look 2 years, 4 cores is nice for now, but Intel ask huge price for 2C/4T and 4C/8T processors, 4 and 8MB L3 Cache, don't even to talk about almost 300$ worth i5 without HT Link.
    i5-6600K + good mid class mobo Z170 + 16GB DDR4... 650$.
Now when AMD beat him with with 4/8 core CPU from mid class that would be interesting.
People give almost 1600-2000$ for i7-6900K and premium mobo and 32-64GB DDR4 Zen with 8C/16T could give easy same performance.
Such scenario become reality when people completely forgot on real improvements between generations 60-80%... etc...
Last 5 years reviews tried hard to present us 10-20% and reason for upgrade, with nice graphics, Lower Better-Higher Better but when you look total for 5 years we got same performance as for single generation.
Than if someone send on market real performance improvements people are shocked because they completely forgot what IT company can offer if they try hard.
Almost as Intel wait AMD and allowed to manufacturers sell 4-5 motherboard generation.
With Haswell was time to Intel launch 6 cores on mainstream and move Extreme on 8 and 10 cores, for 500 and 1000$.
But because they miss to done that now is late, they could increase frequency drop price on 300$ and only hope that AMD tests are not reality.

Clarification on PCIe 4.0 Power delivery

    http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/pci-express-4-will-deliver-75-watt-over-pcie-not-300w.html

Update, 8/24/16, 2:06pm PT:PCI-SIG reached out to tell us that the power increase for PCI Express 4.0 will come from secondary connectors and not from the slot directly. They confirmed that we were initially told incorrect information. We have redacted a short passage from our original article that stated what were originally told, which is that the slot would provide at least 300W, and added clarification:

so up to 500watts on supplimentary plugs?
