Hello all, i have a random problem thats been driving me crazy for last several months. PC has run great for last 3y then this started.. when i'm gaming (world of warcraft) my PC will randomly hard lock. and i have to hard boot it. had this issue for a while then a couple weeks ago PC rebooted on it's own. that issue i found 24 Pin from Psu to MB melted @ extension cable. after replacing that cable & removing extension i checked my PSU voltage w/ my multi meter i refired up PC.  hoping all issues solved. 1 day everything was great no issues then 2nd day & since, my luck, PC still hard locks when gaming. so i started to look @ other options. removed my silverstone st1500 PSU and replaced it is a 850w PSU i had to test. same issue w/ that PSU. so this morning i reconnected my ST1500. planing on running some stress tests tonight whenn i get home

i'm having a brain fart was looking at specs for my GPU's and PSU and wondering is i have a issue w/ power all of the sudden now. i have 3 - GTX-580 hydro copper II (3gb) that looks like power draw is 42a my ST1500 is 25a / rail. originaly i had (what i thought was) 3 of 8-pin rails and 3 of 6-pin rails to my GPU. so i would be @ 50a / card. but after looking some. looks like on that PSU 3 6-pin i used shared a single 25a rail. i thought about just using 1 8-pin to 8pin & 6 pin PCI connector / gpu but worried since they are 25a rail and GPU needs 42a would be too much.

i maybe over thinking this. but like i said this issue been driving me crazy for last several months (I HATE random issues that i can't trace)

here's some info on my PC:
PSU: ST1500
CPU: 2600k
MOBO: Z68-FTW
GPU: 3 - GTX-580 Hydro Copper II (3bg)

Time to start testing all your SSD's & HDD's. I would also run memtest on the memory, make sure to test each stick individually.

i was planing on doing tests & stress tests starting tonight. though when i did them about a month ago everything passed.  and this issue only seems to happen playing Warcraft.. havent really tested on other games since mainly play that one. but when listening to music, youtube etc (hours on end) no locking up.

figure i'll run prime95, Memtest, then some GPU benchmarks.

just didn't know if anyone had a ST1500 PSU and  multugtx-580 cards how they had power ran for them. going to try the benchmarks & testing w/ just 1 cable to each card (8pin from PSU to 8pin & 6pin GPU)

forgot to add i am in surround mode on 3 monitors

Best way to make sure the PSU doesn't get overloaded is by running 3x 8-pin & 3x 6-pin. All 6 cables should get a rail to theirselves.

originally thats what i did w/ my cards.. but then looking @ my PSU they all didn't have seperate rails.

here's how my ST1500 PSU rails are set. 8 rails @ 25amp each:
    12v1: CPU1 - 8-pin
    12v2: CPU2 - 8-pin
    12v3: Mobo - 24-pin
    12v3: IDE/Sata - 6-pin
    12v4: IDE/Sata - 6-pin
    12v4: IDE/Sata - 6-pin
    12v4: IDE/Sata - 6-pin
    12v5: PCI - 8-pin
    12v6: PCI - 8-pin
    12v7: PCI - 8-pin
    12v7: PCI - 8-pin
    12v8: PCI - 8-pin

last night i ran Memtest86+ on each stick of ram. all passed.

this morning i got up early and did a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. benchmark on GPU's. did each on their own then did all 3 in SLI. took a hour+ to complete. nothing shut down or locked up.
it tested 4 different setting on game.. day, night, rain, sunshades. 1920x1080

    average max FPS
    GPU 1 - 203
    GPU 2 - 200
    GPU 3 - 196
    All 3 - 199
    All 3 everything maxed (6032x1080) - 162

something i forgot to add.. did notice on my Mobo display looked like temp was getting high. Mobo was bouncing between 55-69. which is a little confusing bc of my water cooling loop.

guess i'll flush my Loop just to be safe this weekend or even tonight...

Maximum graphics card power for a 580 is 244w/12 = 20a each. Each rail on your PSU can output a max of 30a.

The 42 amps is the total system power requirement by EVGA, 42amps would be a 510watt PSU. 510/12 = 42.5

was making sure bc i even called and was told 42a per card...thought that was real high.... guess tonight i'll run prime95 for several hours to see what happens.

then 2mar maybe flush water loop make sure things are clean, maybe another video benchmark then if i still have same issue idk what i'm going to do. unless there are any other tests i should try

Just ran heaven benchmark on each card then in SLI no hard locks, Also ran 3dmark11 on all 3 then in sli. no lock ups... though i did notice my display on my z68 ftw show temp about 71 on last one... since i have basic edition i was only running benchmarks on 1 monitor not on all 3 like when i game. next step is i guess flush my cooling system...maybe my pump is starting to fail

did 3d benchmark 11 again w/ MHmonitor running

    max temp:
    cpu - 71
    GPU1 - 50
    GPU2 - 48
    GPU3 - 47

so looks maybe a temp issue i'm having...maybe time to run dual pumps

is there a free benchmark for multi monitors....i run 6032x1080

Does the PC continue to lockup if you run only one/two GPU's while playing WOW?

forgot to add did notice a couple strange things w/ video/game a couple times on WoW. when in game no matter where i clicked took me out to windows and graffix looked funny like was trying showing up as lower display... almost like true color compaired to evga.  also one time color was off and there were horizontal lines. that only happened when i was on 1 monitor. and didn't get anything like that when on BF3

Also, since you have the Z68FTW, you can use the PCI-e jumper switches on the motherboard to test the cards one at a time without having to take anything out of the system.  This would be one of the easiest ways to check to see if one of the cards may be the culprit.

i did multiple benchmarks on each card independently ....they all did about the same...no lock ups nada. did it on all 3 in SLI no issues or lockups. but then again w/ all 3 benchmarks only let me do it on 1 screen.... i have AvP benchmark that i think will go on all 3 need to try that one.

open to sugestions how to test cards further or other benchmarks to try. i used heaven & 3dmark11

To be honest I think you should go ahead and replace your PSU with high quality single rail unit. You can always send it back if it doesn't resolve your issue.

Have you tried using 1 or 2 of the molex splitter plugs that came with your graphics cards? That will help you take advantage of more of the rails on your psu and may solve your problems.

my rails are 25a each 30a max. right now i have each card to it's own rail. i had it split a little different originally. i'll have to see what i have free on PSU when i get home. though w/ way PSU is don't think i can run 2 rails / card. since most of 6pin connectors share same rail.

/sigh still messing w/ my PC trying to find my issue for it randomly hardlocking.... repair place found nothing wrong..... over last several weeks re-tested everything (GPU, CPU, Ram, etc) all tests fine even ran prime95 w/ heaven & same time no issues.....i also lowered quality in WoW from ultra to recomended which alot are High now

then as i was playing Warcraft i saw a breif flicker before computer screens went black saying no-video then hardlocking..... said a issue w/ Nvidia Driver. so i've been rolling back drivers doing a clean install each time. yet i still have same issue. i see more and more people are having same issue as i am now. some said rool way back to like 314......i don't know what to do so pissed @ random error i did someting i havent done in forever i bought a consul system just to play games....

going to double check and make sure all my HD drivers for cards are gone... but idk..

Sounds like you're only going to find the issue by replacing hardware.

My GTX 580 did the same thing on WoW. I fixed it by downloading something like EVGA Precision or MSI Afterburner and kicking up the voltage a notch or two. After the GPU got the power it needed, it quit locking up.
