I've been driving myself nuts knowing that the SM951 is available to OEMS but not yet sold on the "public" market for consumers. So I set out to find all of the different OEMs and Samsung Retailers in the USA and found one called AVnet. They currently don't have the drive in stock ONLY because they don't make a habit of carrying OEM items in regular quantities, as OEMs tend to purchase those in bulk, or pre-ordered sets for products made to a certain quote. So the link on the website says "16 week factory lead time" but that is only an estimated time limit for production, which obviously varies depending on the order size and priority. I called the sales representatives on the phone and they confirmed to me that I CAN IN FACT order it, and that Samsung would manufacture it, and then AVnet would ship it to my house! :D

These guys are out of Utah and seem to be a really great company. Here is the link, and here are all of the prices:

512GB NVME SSD SM951 - 464.41 Part# - MZHPV512HDGL-00000

So if you don't want to settle for "LAST GEN" XP941  the SM951 is within your grasp! If you do order one, let us all know how it goes, and keep us posted on delivery and possible benchmarks! I'll try to purchase mine around Christmas. Good luck!

I emailed RamCity (I think they were one of the first to stock the XP941) and they're expecting stock of the SM951 in Q2 2015. Which is about 16 weeks from now :p

I ordered through AvNet, but they quoted me the 14-16weeks, so I'm going to cancel.

Good news, you can find them on eBay where an early adopter is pulling them out of OEM laptops and selling for a reasonable price ()

Looking closely, the date on the device looks like a Sept-2014 run.  Wish stores like NewEgg would grab a few.

I ordered the xp941 from Ram City in Australia. While trying to register it, I couldn't find the drive on Samsungs website. For RMA procedures, I have to go through Ram city, because Samsung isn't selling them. Beware that if they are taking them out of laptops and reselling them, you may not get a warranty, so verify that and purchase at your own risk. Also, I wonder what legal issues there will be when a buyer gets a laptop and the drive isn't correct... I wouldn't be someone if sues the company here very soon.

I canceled the order with AvNet, who said it was another 13 weeks out.

And, I purchased the one off eBay (search Samsung SM951) and you'll find the guy selling them.  You're right, there is no warranty and you'll just get the drive in a bubble envelope, so you have to know what you're doing.

That said, installed yesterday and works perfectly as my new boot drive!  Just had to enable UEFI in the Bios for the boot drives (under CMS for Asus bios).

I wanted to have more information for samsung sm951 can be installed on Windows7 64bit or only on Windows 8.1?
I say this because 8.1 has native support NvMe while Windows 7 no, but there are drivers for this NvMe ssd?

Is this available to the public? can't find this SSD anywhere. I actually kind of wish they would name their M.2 drives like their SD cards and SSD's, such as 8X0 EVO or 8x0 PRO

Wait, wait.  I have a X99 Classified that only supports a M.2 PCI-E 2.0 x4 as is the specs of the XP941.  I just spent $500 for the XP941.  Should I return it for a full refund and wait for this?

I ended up getting one of the SM951s off that guy on eBay. That's the only way to get one right now, everywhere else won't get them for a few months, looks like eBay dude was pulling them from Lenovo ultrabooks and that how he had stock.

Windows 7 should work, I only tried installing 8.1 but it installed in AHCI mode instead of NVMe so 7 should install also.

Can't really speak to the speed, I'm got it working in the M.2 slot on my Gigabyte X99M Gaming 5 but that's only a x2 slot so I couldn't get full speed. I tried using a PCIe to M.2 adapter but the BIOS doesn't recognize it as a boot option so I couldn't test speed.

Honestly, compatibility is going to be a major issue with this drive so I'd hold off for a consumer version or at least until they're more commonly available so motherboard makers can get BIOS updates to support it better.

Compatibility is a big issue and now it looks like customer warranty as well.  (XP941)

Yes, if you're counting on a solid warranty, do not get the SM951.

I skimmed through the thread and one thing I want to add, the SM951 should get full speed on 2.0 x4. There's enough bandwidth.

Well apparently the XP941 as well.  I just ordered one at a very hefty price and is on its way.  Its possible I'll be sending it back the way it came.  Not risking that kind of money on a warrantless product especially when I bought it from a reputable site (newegg) that says there's a 3 year manufacturer warranty but some others believe not so.

If you're going to get the XP941 and are worried about the warranty, ask RamCity, I believe they're warranting the drives themselves but I may be wrong about that.

Yes, I have already asked the question, and you are correct. RamCity does the warranty exchange directly Samsung does not warranty these drives, period. Samsung doesn't even display either of these drives as available to anyone.

I tried to register mine, and it says "this product does not exist"...

I got the product in today and opened the package.  What should I do?  Take a risk in the assumption it won't go bad in the next three years or return it OR keep Newegg liable for it since they advertise that it does come with a warranty?

What number can I call Samsung on this matter to guarantee me it is 3 year warranted?

Sorry for the delay in responding, holidays and all.
I have an ASUS X99-A board, which has M.2 x4 slot on the motherboard.
I had to enable CSM (Compatibility Support Module) in the BIOS to get it to recognize the UEFI drive for Windows installation.
Once I did that, it seemed like the drive is recognized at the BIOS level, which would make me think it may work with Win7.
I cannot be sure tho, as I'm using Win 8.1 x64 myself.  Why not switch to Win8?  Once I got Start8 I found it as good as Win7.
Definitely make sure your motherboard supports M.2 x4 for the SM951, it will work with x2 but you will not get the full benefits, obviously.
For me the choice was buy the XP941, and then replace it in 3 months with the SM951 (because I'm OCD like that). Or buy the SM951 on ebay, no warranty and take the risk. Luckily, in this case the risk was worth it and I'm very happy with the performance.

You guys. I'm drooling over this thing.

To attain max performance from an SM951 you need a 3rd Gen PCIe x4 capable M.2 slot.

If you can find a PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 slot then the SM951 can hit "2150MB/s with reads and 1550MB/s with writes". According to Samsung If you see performance below 1600MB/s then you are being limited by a 2nd Gen PCIe x4 slot. Info via  http://techreport.com/new...producing-pcie-3-0-ssd

If you want to understand the bandwidth limitations of the various slots, Puget has the best guide I've seen explaining it so mad props to them: http://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Overview-of-M-2-SSDs-586/

Edit: Did a great deal of finger work after I made my post.

The only Z97 boards I found that offer 3rd Gen x4 M.2 are the ASRock Extreme6 and Extreme9.  I didn't check all two dozen models from ASRock, but even then most others looked to be Gen2. I've yet to find anybody else that makes it for the Z97 platform.

Only MSI, ASRock, and ASUS have X99 boards that offer 3rd Gen x4 M.2 slots. (Pretty sure this excludes EVGA but not 100% given how sparse the product specs pages are.)

Could you also give us the email of the guy on ebay?

    kenshinco,
Once I actually receive it and make sure its legit I will gladly share the info. Not trying to hoard the drives to myself just want to make sure its legit before I make the recommendation.

The MSI X99S Gaming 7 has a 3.0 x4 slot but I'm only getting 1400-1500. Is there maybe a newer revision that is faster?
