Just upgraded to a GTX 980 two weeks ago, since I got it I've been having this same issue. I just want to make sure there isn't anything I can do to fix this before I get an RMA.

What happens is after 3+hours of playing (can be 3h-7h) my screens go black, all of the sound is distorted for maybe 2 seconds, and then silence. Everything is still running but the screens don't come back on and I can't hear anything. Then I have to restart my computer.

My hardware:
PSU: Seasonic 750w
Mobo: ASRock Extreme4
CPU: Intel i5 (aftermarket cooler)
Ram: HyperX 8gb x2
Other:
- Creative Sound Card
- Avermedia Recording Card

I am going to post a reliability log here showing what it says every time.
Any help would be much appreciated!

ALSO: I have been watching temps to make sure it isn't overheating or anything like that. The highest it gets is 50-55 degrees...
-also only happens while playing games

BCCode: 117 Are you Overclocking the CPU? Check your vCore Voltage it may be to low.
    Is the Motherboard's Bios Current?
How are your Temps on the CPU?
Is your Seasonic 750w PSU over 3 Years old?
Conflict with: Creative Sound Card or  Avermedia Recording Card with NVIDIA's HD Audio Driver?
    What Driver are you using?
    The Current Driver is 347.52

I changed the fan speed to see if it was an overheating problem, that's it in terms of overclocking. If I change voltage how much should I add? (0mV-37mV)
I'm not sure if the mobo bios are current, I updated maybe a month or two ago. Will check/test.
CPU temps maxing around 50 degrees.
PSU is a little less than 2y old.
I'm not sure how to check if there is a conflict with the Sound Card, Recording Card, and NVIDIA.
My driver is current. Version: 347.52

Thank you for your response bcavnaugh!

The VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED bug check has a value of 0x00000117. This indicates that the display driver failed to respond in a timely fashion.

    Possible solutions:

#1 Perform a clean installation of the latest video drivers.
    1. Uninstall Precision X/Afterburner if installed, make sure to select "no" to saving profiles if asked.  Reboot the PC now if you had to uninstall PX or Afterburner.
    2. Download & save graphics driver 347.52 to your desktop. Run the graphics installer located on your desktop once the download is complete.
    3. Select custom advanced install, under custom installation options uncheck all options except the physx system software, if you have a 3D capable monitor and would like to use 3D at some point please select both 3D options, check mark perform clean install, then click next to install the driver, reboot when asked.

#2 Run GPU fans at maximum speed while playing your games.
    1. Download and install MSI Afterburner.
    2. Launch afterburner and set the fan speed (%) slider all the way to max.
    3. Click apply to bring changes you've made into effect. Fan should get louder at this point.
    4. Test games. Leave afterburner open while testing.

#3 Reduce video card clock speeds using msi afterburner.
    1. Set Core Clock (MHz) & Memory Clock (MHz) to -105 then click apply to bring the changes you've made into effect.
    2. Test games. Leave afterburner open while testing.

#4 Modify TDR timeout period via windows registry.
    • Exit all Windows based programs.
    • Press Windows Key+R, type regedit in the Search box, and hit enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Browse to and then click the following registry subkey:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\GraphicsDrivers
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers
    • On the Edit menu, click New, and then select the following registry value from the drop-down menu specific to your version of Windows (32 bit, or 64 bit):

      For 32 bit Windows:
      1. Select DWORD (32-bit) value.
      2. Type TdrDelay as the Name and click Enter.
      3. Double-click TdrDelay and input "A" without the quotes for the Value data and click OK.

      For 64 bit Windows:
    1. Select QWORD (64-bit) value.
    2. Type TdrDelay as the Name and click Enter.
    3. Double-click TdrDelay and input "A" without the quotes for the Value data and click OK.
    • Close the registry editor and then restart your computer for the changes to take affect

Other things to try and test:

#1 Test all older video drivers to see if they produce the same BSOD.
#2 Test the video card in another computer to see if you can replicate the BSOD.
#3 Use a known working video card in your system to see if you can replicate the BSOD.
#4 Take the defective video card to a local computer repair shop to have it tested if you don't have another machine to test with.
#5 Check and make sure the PSU PCI-E power cable is tightly secure to the GPU & PSU.

#6 Check and make sure the PSU is putting out the correct voltage to the GPU while under load. PSU Testinghttp://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/t137886.html (You will need a Digital Multimeter for testing your PSU. You want all three rails to be within ATX spec, ATX Specification: 12V: 11.40 to 12.60,  5V: 4.75 to 5.25,  3V: 3.135 to 3.465. If any of your rails hit the minimum spec I would replace the PSU with a new one.)
HOW TO: Properly load your system when checking PSU voltages.
    #1 Download & Install Prime95
    #2 Download & Install Unigine Heaven 4.0.
#3 Open both Prime95 & Heaven 4.0 (Run Small FFT test for Prime95. Run Heaven 4.0 @ 1280x1024 windowed mode. Run both of these tests at the same time while checking voltages.)

    #7 RMA the card.
    #8 RMA the PSU.

Also set your power plan to max performance make sure none of your cores are "parking" setting the plan to high performance should do this for you. Had same issue and this fixed it. Also if you are oc'ing the cpu make sure you are stable!

What that mean "Modify TDR timeout period via windows registry"...
    What happen than?
I never heard for that tweak.

I never heard for that tweak.

The Microsoft windows display driver model (WDDM) will reset the NVIDIA display driver if the GPU is unresponsive for over 2 seconds by default, modifying the TdrDelay value inside the windows registry to a higher value increases the timeout threshold in which the (WDDM) will reset the NVIDIA display driver if the GPU becomes unresponsive.

Thank you Sajin for your detailed instructions. So far it has been fine, occasionally my video driver will fail and screens will go black then come back. This does not happen frequently but I am tweaking more stuff as I go.

I think what actually fixed it for me was just pumping my power to max. So far after I did that I haven't had the issue I described at the start of the post. So thank you antandbetty, so far so good.

I am still not 100% sure this is fixed, will post back here if I have any other issues. Much thanks to everyone!

I had a similar issue with my GTX 780ti, the solution for me was to increase the boards power beyond 100%.

I use Zotacs Firestorm util because it's easy to use, on the clocks tab there is a slider for board power limit (%) by default it is 100%, I set mine to 108% and have been gaming without issue since.

I have a gtx 980 FTW and i think increasing the power limit to 108% is working. Im using EVGA Precision 16 and did what oobymach said.
