For decades, the user interface for Windows has functioned a certain way. And even though Windows 8 shook things up with new interactive elements, many things haven’t changed. For example, would you like to close a program or a window? Just click the red X in the corner and be on your way.

That is, until now.

In the latest pop-ups from Get Windows 10, the red “X” in the corner functions exactly the same as clicking “OK.” Yes, you read that right — if you click the “X” to exit the window, Microsoft interprets that as consent to upgrade your computer to Windows 10. Or, as they put it:

“If you click on OK or on the red ‘X’, you’re all set for the upgrade and there is nothing further to do.”

Disgusting.

Also beware - Microsoft just acquired LinkedIn, so expect every bit of info you have there, private or not, to be thoroughly abused.

Anyone notice how long it takes to get updates to download on W7 now? Often it can be hours. Gee Microsoft, that wouldn't be intentional, would it?

    Get your.... nevermind.
Since XP it has be very slow. Don't start complaining now. 2 years ago it took hours to get caught up on W7 updates from a fresh install. It usually took me 2 days to get back up and running close to where I like it.

Yeah...I did a clean install of Windows 7 on my HP Envy laptop, so I could give it to my son.  It literally took overnight to run and install Windows updates.  I started around 7pm and finished at 9am the following morning.  Rumor has it that MS has basically saved most of it's bandwidth for Windows 10.  By making it difficult to update Windows 7, perhaps they are trying to force the hand...

It's way easier to just download and install the Windows 7 "Convenience Rollup" package than to deal with windows update and 10 reboots.  And yes the Windows 10 "upgrade" aka trojan is a nuisance - just make sure to install the GWX Control Panel or whatever your preferred upgrade blocker is before updating!

Just gonna play Devil's advocate here, don't hurt me. But if you read the text, it says the schedule is already set (which is the REAL problem, because we aren't asked to set it or not set it ourselves from the start) so clicking X wouldn't have any effect on that. You're merely dismissing a window at that point. It doesn't mean Yes or No, it just means "Go away and don't change anything". Though I agree in this case it's totally sneaky and completely ridiculous as I got a phone call from my dad who sucks with PCs asking me "why does everything look different" after he had gone to bed and woken up to Windows 10.

Also FWIW, those of us who have had the "privilege" of designing GUI applications in Visual Studio, would recognize that modeless dialog boxes that only have an Okay button typically use the same function as the Okay button with the X button, which is usually just the close function. If there were an Okay and Cancel button, the X would take the role of Cancel. That's the "typical" design language that Windows uses. Though should you expect the average user to know this? No, and Microsoft should have made it much more clear.

This and a few other reasons is why my older family members are still on Windows XP.

    Nice links, thanks

May I add that MS decided to make the "catalog.update" function ONLY with IE at this time.

Message I got with FF v47.0

"Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Update Catalog
To use this Web site's full functionality, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later."

So, I tried to open with IE and get ----- a useless page ???

Maybe because this PC is up to date ?

I also tried to open in a std IE browser session (instead of Inprivate Browsing)

Did you check what IE you downloaded ? It doesnt automatically give you the latest when installing a fresh install.
