I just spent the last 80 min or so attempting to delete a failed MS store game download from MY computer. My buddy sent me a code for Quantum Break today and I wanted to try it, bad idea. It seems MS has really "dumb down" settings to such a degree that the MS store has almost no settings. Once I re-enabled wupdate service the game was downloading, despite giving me no choice of install location. After I realized this it was too late (I left to go back to work not thinking about it and go no warning of disk space) Came back home to a completely full C drive (only a 128GB SSD) somehow a 40GB game uses 74GB of space?!

No problem, I'll just uninstall the game...WRONG! It never finished installing, apparently MS store games download the full size of the game, install it, then proceed to remove temp files...extremely inefficient compared to Steam. So without the game installed I was sitting on a 99% full C drive and could not uninstall as it was not on the list.

Finally tracked down the HIDDEN folder that the MS store installs to...and it's locked. I need admin rights to delete it, of which neither I, nor the actual admin account seem to posses...After going though multiple options, some I found online and some I figured out myself, I managed to take complete ownership of the C drive and all subfolders and files!

Yay, or not. Apparently I still need permission from myself to delete the folder...@#$%!#$%!$%!$@#%!#$%!#%$ Ready to throat punch Bill Gates at this point. Messed around with some more options and check boxes and FINALLY got the dang folder deleted.

About to eat some dinner now and write MS a nice long email about why the store or games, at least, should have a separate install location setting, not just programs all together. Also, that a user should be able to delete or open files they created or downloaded. Also found it amusing that downloading a game requires that wupdate is running.

You sound like my wife. She doesn't like digital content either.

On the single up side, I leaned a significant about about user groups and permissions. I no longer have to keep giving myself permission to open my own folders.

Obviously you've never used Windows Vista or Windows 98 Second Edition which were far worse. Windows ME...what a winner that was.

did you try the "disk" drive clean up? it might be one of the "can't see the forest because of the trees" things where there's a option that's so obvious it's overlooked. granted that might not clean up failed installations, but not sure about that really.

    Oh here we go.

I am on Vista for past good 5 years and wont change it until push comes to shove. I love it, to put it simply.

I remember 98 SE and playing games on it and using internet but nothing more. Remember ME to but nothing horrific or bad.

Nothing is worse than 10 imo. I read about it and the horrors.

I will gladly go to Win 7 if someone wants to sell their key for cheap. At the least Home Basic.

Vista was a nightmare for me, Vista SP 3 (Win 7) was everything Vista should have been. I consider that OS more of an open beta of Win 7.

It was one of the first things I tried and only managed to free about 1500MB. I even tried searching the drive to include hidden files/folders and even meeting nearly exactly the type and size of files the search failed to find them. It was almost like MS didn't want me to find them...

MS doesn't want you to find them. Windows Store is supposed to be an encrypted and hidden part of your operating system that you aren't supposed to think about or change. You are supposed to just go to the Store and use it. Too bad, huh? I don't like Microsoft's direction on this. I wonder if they plan to add the option to move the Store files to another disk. They may not add that option in fear that the operating system and Store would get out of sync after disk swaps and operating system reinstallations/upgrades and for fear that people would start thinking about the store as something that is on their computer instead of thinking of it as a black box service that "just works".

all the  apps you download for  in windows store  or install are  easy to erase or delete   in settings not windows store settings but setting just   click on settings in start menu then go to the first category  system display Apps and power   once there  click  on Apps left hand  side    simple as that   should be listed ther  if not it is in the old programs and features menu

Thanks, I know this already and I can see I was not that clear on some of my methods. I looked in the "apps" first and it was not present, as it never finished installing, the sloppily coded installer does not even attempt to clean up after itself.

Lol. Apparently Windows needed permission, from me, to get past the spinning ball gray screen (right before logon screen)...Somehow taking ownership, deleting a file, giving ownership back to "Trusted" Installer, and retaining my full permission, breaks Microsoft... Somehow, changing the owner of an object deletes permission entries that were never there and makes Windows need permission from me or itself(which it somehow can't grant) to load it's own files.

I had to reset my install to get it to load and big surprise, all the permission fixes require you to be on the desktop. I am leaning heavily towards dropping MS and going Linux or finding some sort of "fixed" Windows where the user does not have to give the user permission to access/change the user's files. I feel that this was created by the Borg, once I changed permissions on the original Windows Apps folder I am completely blocked from grabbing the one on my games drive. Even if I take ownership of the entire drive (which I should have by default, it is not a system disk) it will not let me add/remove or change any permissions...

MS store won't load now so I can't even install the game I broke MS to play...LMAO! If I had paid for this trash OS I would head to Seattle and demand a refund and a build of Win 7 x64 Ult with no permission blocks.

I can only dream of the day someone somewhere somehow devises a way to run Windows games on Linux without the overhead or surprise side effects that comes with Wine. A man can only dream...

The better dream is to get away from "Windows-only" games.  If any graphics API other than DirectX can gain traction (and there have been many failed attempts), we would finally have your dream come true.  The only reason why we have "Windows games" is because DirectX is a Windows exclusive and games are predominantly coded for the DirectX API.  There is no other technical reason why any game can't work natively on Mac or Linux.  DirectX is the only holdout remaining.  Microsoft has spent millions and millions and millions of dollars to ensure that DirectX is the API that all the top developers use.  That is the reason why you have to use Wine and have a poorly abstracted and low performance experience of your Windows game virtualized in Linux.

I am fine with people playing games in Windows.  I play games in Windows.  I am not going to say that anyone has to stop using Windows.  I just wish that we had a graphics API which was cross-platform so that consumers would have a choice in the matter.  Maybe an open-source API will never happen.  Maybe there is too much difficulty and expense which means that open-source becomes too unrestricted and becomes a roadblock to progression due to lack of funding and bankruptcy.  Fine!  How about a well-funded closed-source developer sees a money-making opportunity available by developing a product which unifies operating systems and can allow game developers to more easily develop for multiple platforms and thus create more sales?  Maybe someone will see a capitalistic way to defeat DirectX, break the monopoly, and give consumers a real choice.  Not just a real choice, but a real good choice.  We already have choice... but our choice is poor because primarily only the unpopular titles are available on platforms other than Windows.  Microsoft spends millions and millions and millions of dollars investing in and support AAA titles to ensure that all AAA game titles are Windows exclusive on PC.  We need someone to either legislate against their anti-competitive behavior or have the money to take their behavior head-on and overthrow it.

MS doing  anything cross-platform, "Let me think!"  Joking aside, just to play a game, or move files around shouldnt be so much BS, hell DOS wasnt even this much BS.....
