I have asus x58 black edition mb and tryed installing 2 gtx 980 sli. Tryed everything and nothing, I just get screen flashing and sometimes just crashes. I'm wondering if my x58 board is to old? I have a 1200w ps so that should be enough power. Even did a complete format and everything looks good and all I get is flashing and the frame rates don't look that good something is wrong

yep tried different bridges and different spots. The cards I bought were the EVGA GTX980 SC. I could get one to work fine and then when selected sli showed up everything was good but when tried to play a game or ran a bench mark would just flash like a strobe light. I even under clocked and nothing. I tried everything and finially gave up. I checked asus website nothing new for bios, and had everything up to date. Maybe ASUS and EVGA dont want to play nice together. I wouldnt be surprised that the lastest nvida driver is bad as well.

The only thing i didnt try was A EVGA bridge, would that matter?

Anyways I just returned the cards, I was going to keep one but I get better frame rates using my GTX690.

I'm having the same issue. I've tried two motherboards, an MSI Big Bang Marshal B3, and the EVGA X99 FTW.
I'll just refer to the X99 setup following. I have 980 in lane 1 and 4, the two x16 lanes. The only other lane used is 2, where I have my audio card. I've tried the bridge on both spots. My bios is up to date. My driver is up to date. If I disable SLI and plug monitor into either card, they both work individually, even with the bridge installed. As soon as I enable SLI though, I get screen flashing during game play. It's fine for desktop and applications, but games flash constantly. I'm at 3840x2160, using HDMI 2.0 cables. Connected to an ONKYO tx-nr636, which is connected to a Samsung HU8700. NOTE: 4k at 60hz is working fine, so I don't think there's a hardware issue. I know the components are all HDMI 2.0 as are my cables.

I too am having this issue. I have Classified cards in SLI. It only seems to do it at 4k. I turned the res on my desktop down to 2560x1440 and it stopped but if I try to game in 4k it flashes. Annoying as hell. Also over volting isn't working for me either. I too tried downclocking my cards thinking it may have been power or stability related. Games stay running, the screen just flashes black. At least it's not just me. Any updates on this? Did RMA work for you? I bought these cards to run 4K, I was able to run 4k fine with my last cards, until one died. Now I'm stuck with this crap.

I connected directly to TV. There was a long list of TS with advanced support, but in the end there was no getting around it, without going around the receiver.

You're using SLI right? I just got mine fixed. What I did, which was suggested on another thread, was using a flexible SLI bridge and connecting from an SLI finger on one side and the opposite on the bottom card. I guess the SLI fingers are defective on some of the cards.

tried several. It turned out that they all worked when I went straight to the TV. While connected to the Onkyo It worked at 4k@60fps until I enabled SLI. SLI only worked 4k @ 60 when connected to TV directly. It turned out that the flashing screen is the symptom of nearly every SLI problem you will have.

I would have normally recommended that you try each card one at a time. It's possible that the secondary card was defective -- which would have been proven when you tested that card by itself. But you don't have the cards any more; so you can't test that theory.

Yeah, love the Evo. Working on building it for 400 HP. I just need to get the turbo upgraded and cams installed.
    +1 to your profile.
Also I have to take back my previous comment. Turns out that was only a temporary fix. I was able to permanently fix it by switching out my power supplies. The OCZ ZX1250w was the trouble, I don't know why for sure. I've had trouble in the past with Nvidia cards using that PSU. My Cooler Master RPP 1250w proves to be a champ once again. I only used the OCZ because my Cooler Master doesn't have four 8 pin PCI-E outputs. I'm using one of the 2x6 pin to 8 pin adapters that came with the card. The adapter is actually of really high quality. I really believe it will hold up just as well as a regular 8 pin. Especially since our cards don't draw that much power anyway.

I'm not near PC now; I'm at work, but I thought both the power plugs for the 980 SCs are 6 pin only. Are you using other PCIe? How do you do that without reducing your available lanes? or you're not worried about that? or you have board that allows x16 in two slots while other slots are occuppied? I'll have to check out your build when I get a chance to see which board you have, what slots you're using, etc.

I'm using Classified edition cards. So still pretty much the same thing, just requires two 8 pins instead of two 6 pins. I have the ASrock z97 OC Formula. I'm using PCI-E x16 slots 1 and 3. It has 4 total. The board I have reduces the bandwidth from x16 to x8/x8 when two slots are occupied. I'm not really concerned about the PCI-E bandwidth. I've done a lot of research about that and the difference between x8 and x16 isn't really much at all if anything. It depends on the card, a dual GPU card like a Titan Z might see reduction in performance in an x8 PCI-E slot, but I really doubt that for our cards there is much difference between x8 and x16.
Here's a really good article with benchmarks about the 980 in various PCI-E configurations.

thanks for that. Given your info, I tried adding my x-Fi Fatality Champion to my X99 FTW. First I uninstalled my Realtek audio driver for the onboard card, "Azalea" and disabled it in the BIOS. I tried all 3 free lanes, and each time, when I tried to install the driver, I received a message from the installer stating that there was no supported device detected. I tried with headphones plugged in and without. After removing the x-Fi, re-enabling Azalea, plugging my headphones into the onboard card, and installing the Realtek again my headphones work well, although I liked the sound on my x-Fi much better. I've never gotten it to work on the x99, but it worked on my MSI Big Bang Marshal (B3) board very well. When I plug it into a lane and start the PC, the light does come on. I'm certain it's seated all the way. I'm not sure what else to try; it's not worth removing one of the graphics cards.

No, it's not. I have an x-fi card I don't use anymore, but if you have a 980, and you're running an HDMI to your receiver, if you have one. That has vastly superior sound quality to an x-fi sound card. It supports all the high end audio formats, up to 192 hz sampling rate and 7.1 surround sound. If you have a decent home theatre surround sound system, that's the way to go. But for headphones, the x-fi would probably be the better option.

have killer home system, but that will never compare to positional accuracy of true 7.1 headphones such as tiamat. Regardless of opinion, they should work.

and what's wrong with a good sound blaster? Mine with my tiamat headphones is the most immersive experience I've had, from an audio standpoint. Pretty close to uncanny valley but with audio.

I used headphones for a long time, when I used to live in an appt. I can't stand having them on my head at this point, glasses +3d vision glasses + headset= pain in my ass. lol

    cerealkeller

Here's a really good article with benchmarks about the 980 in various PCI-E configurations.

http://www.techpowerup.co...ml

A good set of headphones won't make you hot.
And I wear mine with glasses too, but can't even notice any different feeling around my ears with glasses on or off. Not sure if that says more about the glasses or the padding of the headphones.
It might be time to give headphones another shot if you're interested in upping your game. I can hear someone trying to pass in iRacing.
When hunting, I can hear footsteps from across the map. I hear you reloading around the corner behind me. There's nothing like hearing someone 'behind' you trying to sneak up for a knife kill then looking back to put one between they're eyes. I know surround sound can do that too, but it'd take 10 times or more $$$ to do it as well.
