The reference pcb's allow up to 1.28v. Pretty sure the kingpin card can handle it at 100% fan speed.

Ouch, there is no way I can enjoy my rig at 100% fan speed, thats too loud. Everyone at kingpin forums says card will just be more unstable with higher voltage, I dunno what to do...

Water cooling.

Which I don't wanna spend money into. Saij, whats the heat increase that voltage change will bring? Everyone in Kingpin forums is saying it won't even make the card stable, it will just make it worse. Thoughts?

Don't know how much heat it will add as I don't own a kingpin card. I said in post #12 that it may make it worse.

Well I'll throw the BIOS on the LN2 switch and see how it works, might as well.  let you know what happens

Threw on the custom bios on LN2 BIOS,  followed your steps, flashed it, rebooted and seemed fine. Power level didn't change though. Attempted to run Valley and Heaven and both crash and lock up instantly. Oddly enough the Power target only says 156%, not 170%. Hardware monitor also only shows 1.212v, not 1.28... I dunno

Software never measures the voltage correct. Most software won't read over 1.212v if you can get a probe it cable and multimeter, you can check the real voltage.. The difference will shock you 95% of the time.

I will say, I think you found the limit of the card and probably why you got it for such a good price. The original owner probably knew it had hit it's limit on air, and just decided to part with it.

I would personally reinstall the stock bios and be happy with it. You still have a great card, even at those clocks.

The card remains steady under games but Heaven and Valley just crash eventually at around 1520mhz on the core. Ung.....

It may just be the stress from the synthetic Benchmarks that isn't produced by games. I can run 4k Benchmarks all day at 1550-1599 mhz on 3 way sli. Drop it to 1440p, and I can't get near 1550.. I can't explain why. Magic.. Gremlins.. Not really sure. This is on 980ti classifieds. I just don't run 1440p or lower and it solves the issue.

The OV max limit still drops and I get downlocking but the games don't crash. Wish that 1.28v BIOS would have worked just to see if it would stop downclocking itself...

Saj, is their a BIOS that loads like 1.23-1.25v in the core? Maybe something in between will work

I doubt going to 1.23 or 1.25 is going to do anything. Undervolting may help.

You're getting what, 1500MHz stable on air? That's actually really good. Not the absolute best, but in the top 10 to 15% for daily driving and overclocking any 980Ti on air.

It's still faster than an OCed 1070, and just as fast as a stock 1080. I'd call it a win.

And to put it in a little more perspective: I purchased two b-stock 780 Ti classifieds last year when I had two stock blower 780 Ti's. Do you know how much higher they over clocked with their better coolers and really cool voltage tool? 30Mhz higher than the reference boards. A whopping 30.

Sold all those suckers off and got a Gigabyte 980 Ti that hits 1466MHz (1454 after the first temp throttle) with a minor voltage bump - I had more luck with that card, but you paid less for yours and overclock higher. You won the lottery (sure not a billion dollars, but a couple of hundred million)- be happy!

People last year with GIGABYTE series 900 get excellent overclocking result.
Because of that I think customers will search for their cards and GIGABYTE will sell many cards.

I tried a Gigabyte g1 last year, the fan noise was horrid on those teensy 80mm fans and it coil whine badly. Lots of other Newegg reviewers had dead dvi ports and it wasn't that good of an overclocker. Never again....

The coil whine being unacceptable is understandable, but it doesn't matter what brand for overclocking you go with - it is still a lottery that some win and others lose. Unless you just go with what the card is advertised at - even then sometimes the card fails at even the manufacturer's stock speeds.

1518, not bad. Seems about normal for Air. Did you push it or just a quick run?

Try it without K boost. Usually the score goes up a little.

Use the nvidia control panel performance setting for Firestrike. Don't use the global setting. Use the drop down, select 3D Mark, set performance to Maximum. This will keep clocks at stock as a minimum, so it will never actually idle, making the return to higher clocks even quicker.

K boost puts the card under a small load, and can lower scores a few hundred points sometimes. Try it out and let us know.

I never use k boost but dunno what it's for either. Oddly enough, changing the priority from power load to temp seems to make the card stable now. It ran several passes on Heaven benchmark ultra with no crash. It still down clocks to 1488 when the Temps hitting 68c with fan at 90%

Redoing of paste with gelid OC extreme had yielded no temp reduction. Damm....

I honestly think you have found your hard limit on the card Arct1c0n. I know higher would be better, but you got a really good deal on the card.

Maybe if you are willing to try out a G10 Bracket from Kraken, with an inexpensive AIO. That may pull the Temps down some more and allow you to overclock further. I know after 65c, the Kingpins get angry.

I don't think the krakens work on classified and kingpins because of the VRAM heatsink plate

They work, you just need a copper shim to go between the Die and the Cooler plate, and then you mount a fan for the VRM.

Pro Tip, most standard cards don't even have a heat spreader on the VRAM.  Since the KPE has the VRAM and VRM heat plates as 2 separate plates, you can remove the VRAM heat plate, and then mount the cooler directly.

Do you know why they split the plates on the KPE card, but no others?

If you've got the budget, I would buy a waterblock and a prefilled EK expandable AIO setup. Not as much of a hassle as you may think... certainly easier than editing a BIOS. My Classy was stuck at roughly 1515Mhz on air (and would downclock like mad). Water and liquid metal TIM got me to 1550Mhz. Voltage and bios less so. Maxwell mostly cares about temps. 1550Mhz was at roughly 35-40c vs ~60c on air (100% fans). I would not be surprised if next winter, with some cold air, I can get close to 1600Mhz (benches not games) at around 20c.
