those with 980s who upgrade might be disappointed soon.  When gaming on DX12 is common, I might just drop in a 970 to replace the 670 and all of a sudden a very large, and cheap, increase in performance.

I think the rather absurd pricing on the 980Ti might have something to do with DX12.  Instead of wholesale GPU swaps, people can just upgrade the weakest GPU in their system and call it a day.  IMO, it's going to put a rather large damper on top end GPU sales.  Heck, if you're MB supports it, you could just buy super cheap GPUs off ebay and run 4 of them with absurd performance levels.

I could be wrong but it seems worthwhile to have some patience and see how it plays out.

Lol, and this all over again. This is why when i upgrade to (2) 980s I'll hold off for awhile, but wouldn't get my hopes up on this DX12. Developers may not do anything for a couple years until they see the #s for the people who have registered as having DX12. Yes, this survey exists. The same thing that happened when DX11 came out, developers still used DX9 (gag...).

Normally I'd be in complete agreement.  The difference is that this time, MS is giving the OS away to people with W7/W8.  They want to drastically accelerate the adoption process, and so I think we'll see a much more rapid transition in DX version this time.  DX12 is also a much bigger upgrade in capability than any other other DX increment in the past.  You just need to look at star swarm benchmarks to see that.  I've also run the API overhead test in 3D Mark on W10, and the results were stunning.

Which OS introduced DX11?  Vista.  What was most everyone using at that point?  XP.  I didn't move on from XP until W7 was available for 6 months.

Windows Vista brought DX10. Windows 7 brought DX11, but hardly any developers were using it when it launched because everybody still used windows XP, sad. This is the reason I'm not holding my breath when Windows 10 arrives. Even if Microsoft is providing free upgrades, I still can see way too many people being "lazy" to upgrade, not to mention the history of Microsoft, they seem to have a "good/bad" routine.
Also, believe it or not, many people don't know how to do upgrade the operating system.

You're right.. DX11 wasn't VistA.  My memory is like that sometimes.. :)

Still, I think that gamers are far more likely to upgrade to W10, and since we're talking about a gaming API, the adoption rate should be much higher for W10.

Anyway.. that was just a point I was trying to get across, and went a bit OT re: the 980Ti.  I'm baffled thinking about a MB/CPU upgrade, but that's a discussion for another thread...

Forgive my ignorance but I have a 980 acx 2.0 with 54 more days left on the step up. Will I be able to step up to this? Did EVGA allow for 780 to step up to 780ti?

i asked a similar question and what they told me was. that yes the 780 was upgradeable to the 780 ti because it had the same gm core? but the 980 ti will be a compltetly different chip then the 980 so im not sure

The performance of 980 ti and Titan X is too identical. That chip gimping didn't even matter in the end.

Yeah Forbes just released a comparison between the two cards and there's a 4-5 frame variance when running GTA 5@ 4k. I just hope with 60 days left on Step Up program I don't get screwed.

Would it be wise to submit a request for the step up program now? Or should I wait for an official announcement?

Thanks for that, but i'm going to return my card to micro center. It's 7 days old today and is constantly crashing. I might keep the cash and wait to see what the R9 390x does or get a couple of 980tis.

Just bought 980ti SC version from PC case gear in Australia. It is due stock in today.

I should receive it on Tuesday or Wedensdey.

Happy that SC version is cheaper than any other manufacturer such as Asus or MSI or Gigabyte

Thanks EVGA
