That's silly. The 880 isn't even out yet, and they are claiming the 980 is out at the end of this month? Nope.

Guessing you missed the talk/rumors of NVIDIA wanting to skip the 800 series in order to present a unified naming scheme between mobile and desktop parts?

There's been many rumors about the 800 series, but considering that the 800M series is already available (and only relatively recently) it would be contradictory that a 900 series desktop GPU is released in order to unify the naming scheme between mobile and desktop... that doesn't even make sense, unless a 900M series is going to be released at the end of this month also, virtually immediately after the 800M series.. This would be contrary to the way NVidia has operated for years. If anything, they will draw out the 800 series (mobile and desktop) as long as they can, unless AMD come up with something competitive enough to push NVidia forward..
 
If the rumor was there would be no new desktop series until mid 2015, then I could perhaps believe NVidia skipping an 800 desktop series and launching a 900 series for both desktop and mobile, but launching a different numbered series desktop now in order to unify it with a recently released mobile series but giving it a different series number? LMAO! Surely you can see how nonsensical that claim is?

No, I can't.

SSJ92 just explained that it's to unify the architecture, which makes more sense.
 
The way I had read your original post was that they were releasing a 900 series desktop to make it unify by name with the existing 800M series, which made little sense since (a) they have different series names, (b) there isn't a 900M series and (c) the 800M series is relatively recent - just 5-6 months since release, which would mean a 900M series is unlikely this soon.. although it appears I may be wrong about that too, lol! 
 
But yeah, it's about the architecture so no worries.
 
The 880M released mid March 2014, so that's only 6 months between flagship enthusiast models from different series.. that's pretty damn fast. The last few series have been closer to a year or more apart.
