I thought I would ask here how many people have experienced GPU Coil Whine.  I have had many cards over the years and have never had this problem, not with a single one.  However, I have seen many complaints and when I worked for EVGA in Tech Support, I got many calls regarding it.  Am I just lucky, or is this problem really a bit over inflated?

I have never had any Coil Whine on any of my EVGA GTX Graphics Cards.
It might be because all my cards are on Water or are Hybrid Cards.
It also might be because I cannot hear that sound.

Had it in my GTX 760 SC when new..Was very pronounced when running 3DMark/stress testing, but only sometimes gaming..Seems the more I stress tested it the less frequent/quieter it became..It went away after about a week or so and I haven't heard a peep out of it for 2 years now.

I never had it in any of my video boards starting with the 9500GT. I have seen YouTube videos about coil whine and I can't hear anything so I don't know what they're complaining about anyway. Maybe these people should see a doctor about tinnitus?

2x Gigabyte GTX 770 : huge coil whine. The only noisy GPUs I ever got (except noisy fans on older cards or reference design ones). One day, my daughter even thought the rig was dying while she was playing Crysis 3. She powered it off, asking for help !

why make it simple when it can be complicated ????

    rig 1 : Asus P9X79-E WS / i7 4930k / 3-way SLI EVGA 780ti / Quadro K2000 / watercooled / 3D Vision Surround / 3 x Samsung 2233RZ + HP ZR22W

    rig 3, 4 5, etc. : uninteresting !

Off the top of my head I count 13 EVGA GPU's.  All run on air and I've never heard any coil whine.  This ranges from a 6800 up to my current 970's.

I'm with Zuhl, I've never heard it. Either I'm lucky enough that the literally dozens of GPUs I've owned have all been symptom free, or I'm deaf to that particular sound.

    Or something...

The only whine that I'm hearing is coming from the owners of perfectly good video boards just looking for some attention. Just my POV.

When in testing I have heard it, but that is an open case environment so it would be more pronounced and many cards if you get your ear right next to it you can hear a small whine, but really not much aside form that.  Sure there have been some here and there that got RMA'd which were bad, but honestly an occasional issue is expected, we do our best to keep it from happening but sometimes things break.  For my own cards, the only ones I ever had whine on me was my old 3778's, and that was ONLY with a huge clock and a LOT of additional voltage.  Voltage target was all the way up and I forgot how much I added in from the voltage utility but it was a bunch, and over 1400 core clock, and even then it was audible but not bad.  Also my case is kinda noisey.....so I am not the best judge of how loud is too loud.

Some of it I also wonder if it could simply be the frequency of the noise, case and point, my San Ace 38mm fans were definitely louder than my old Ultra Kaze fans, however the other half complained about the sound form the Ultra Kazes WAY more, she said they "went right through me" so it  could also be that, like why nails on a chalk board will stand some peoples hair on end and others it is just a mundane scratching noise in the background....  For what it's worth, that's my 2 cents.

Like I said earlier, or tried to say, is that even in YouTube videos about coil whine I can only hears the case fans running. Is it supposed to be a high pitched tone like in a Local oscillator in a two-way radio or is it more like the buzzing of a transformer with loose windings? Since I've never heard it before it might help if I knew what I was listening for. Anyone?

I've had it on GTX 970's and that's about it... It was really loud on my Corsair HX750... When I moved it over to a EVGA 850 G2 it was a lot quieter. When I changed out my system and went to the set-up in my signature now... I have not heard it. When I sold my R9 290X's they didn't have coil whine in my system... When the person that bought them put them on a Corsair HX750, they were loud... I've read and listened to youtube videos where people try to narrow it down to one reason... It's really a combination of components... Your PSU can effect it, your motherboard can effect it... or it could just be the card it self.

Best way to see if you have it is to run the Windows Experience Index and listen for it. If you have it, you will know.

I guess I don't have it but since it's described as a whine I can only imagine it is like a high pitched tone like a 8000 Hz test signal.

If you have to ask what you're listening for, you probably don't have any.  At least not noticeable enough to make a difference...

Nice video, I cannot hear any pitch after about 9400 Hz.
Good clip to add to my Favorites, Thanks

It was a lucky find. It might come in useful for someone trying to describe a whine in the future. My hearing isn't as good as it used to be due to natural degradation from age and attending way too many rock concerts when I was much younger at the Spectrum in Philadelphia when they used to have dance concerts instead of seated only concerts. Dance concerts were banned due to people getting trampled to death at a dance concert in Cleveland or Chicago. I always liked the way you cannot only hear deep bass noted but also feel them. That's why I spent over $300 on my Bose Companion 3 PC speakers. I love to feel the bass and hear the crash of cymbals in my music.

I can't hear any pitch after like 17000Hz... If I were to compare it to a frequency on that video, it's closest to a 10000Hz-12000Hz sound tone.

I wonder if the speakers used to listen to the video play a part in what a person will hear or not hear?

If you're hearing the whine from your video board and not in the video, I would say yes. Most speakers are rated with a high frequency response of between 18 Khz and 20 KHz though I think they degrade over time and the spec is sometimes exagerated by the manufacturers.

P.S. Even with my Bose Companion 3 speakers my ears lose the signal above 10 kHz.

Thanks.  Luckily I've never had any noticeable coil whine from any of my hardware.  I'm not really up on the audio stuff and was just curious.

I have never had coil whine with my systems. My last roommate's system had coil whine at our old apartment but now doesn't at his new apartment. Electricity is strange
