They've said this is a 32Gb/s port; that implies a PCIe 3 x4 interface, doesn't it? One of the remaining questions about this board is where the M.2 lanes are coming from. Could the overlap with SATA 4 & 5 indicate a hybrid PCIe/SATA port (which is a thing, I'm given to understand)? This is my first in-depth look at a M.2-featured motherboard, so I'm still sorting this out myself.

This board already has more SATA ports than I will ever need. I will happily sacrifice a couple in order to run a SM951 unbound in the M.2 slot.

Yes it does mean that, so it will have the m.2 x4 interface, which is fantastic. If it does take lanes from sata ports, AWESOME. Thats much better than doing what other boards (like ASROCK) are doing, and disabling one of the other PCI-E lanes. My motherboard has 3 x16 slots, but I can only use 2 because my XP941 is occupying 4 of its lanes, so the whole thing is disabled :P Meanwhile I have 6 SATA ports that I'm not using....

The X99 chipset only has 2.0 lanes. So if the M.2 can indeed operate in 3.0 x4 mode it will pull that from one of the PCIe slots. The Sata port overlap is probably when it's operating in PCIe 2.0 mode.

Uh.... What do you mean the x99 chipset only has 2.0 lanes? You mean like PCI-E 2.0? There are plenty of X99 motherboards with PCI-E 3.0...?

My thoughts entirely. I need a really fast ssd in Project Monochromatic. :)

Check out my Sponsored build!

The PCIe 3.0 lanes come from the CPU. The X99 chipset only has PCIe 2.0 lanes off it.

I thought X99 was the first to be native PCI-E 3.0.

I believe Skylake will be the first to support PCIe 3.0 natively off the motherboard chipset.

Re: X99 Micro 2 - New motherboard announced! 2015/07/23 18:59:20 (permalink)
Yep, it looks like all X99 PCIe 3.0 lanes are from the CPU. X99 chipset lanes are all 2.0.

However, like my point regarding surplus SATA ports, I'm not chasing a x16/x16 holy grail video card fantasy either. So the question still comes down to: where are those 4 3.0 lanes required for 32Gb/s on the M.2 slot coming from, and what PCIe video configurations are left remaining?

Is this one going to have a premium IO shield? I was so disappointed when I opened the box and saw the x99 Classified IO shield

Been holding out too. Couple more days I think. Asus already has their mATX competitor board up on their site so EVGA has to be right around the corner with this board. Jacob teased board and retail packaging on his Twitter a couple days ago.

For now nicest X99 motherboard.
Now I remember...
...One guy offer before few days X99 Micro didn't want to build Intel Xtreme... And Microcenter offer now 5820K for 299$.
He could build Xtreme 6 cores for 450$ total and he decide to sell motherboard and to keep Z97.
Next Xtreme 10% stronger same with DDR4 will cost him 1200$ if decide to build one day.
Missed chance on stupid way.

People this is solution for motherboards without PCI-Ex1 slot...
new CREATIVE Sound Blaster Omni Surround 5.1 - USB 5.1 Sound Card...with gold plated outputs
one of newer cards with similar maybe even same software as Sound Blaster Z
http://us.creative.com/p/sound-blaster/sound-blaster-omni-surround-5-1

There are and CREATIVE Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro with SBX, maybe newer version
http://www.soundblaster.com/products/Sound-Blaster-X-Fi-Surround-5-1-Pro.aspx

Both cards are arround 60$ and no such onboard solution on any motherboard.

Jacob has opened a new thread, but just for posterity, according to the manual, the lane format is:

PCI-E Lane Distribution (40 Lane Processor)
 PE1 – x16
 PE2 – x16
 PE3 – x8

PCI-E Lane Distribution (28 Lane Processor)
 PE1 – x16
 PE2 – x8
 PE3 – x4

The M.2 x4 lanes come from PE3 and must be enabled from the BIOS.

Wait you want to say that someone with 28 lanes processor install graphic card in 1st slot and she work on x16 speed and install Sound Card (PCIE x1)
in 3rs slot and she use lanes from chipset and graphic card continue to work on x16 in 1st slot?

Hey Jacob, any word on availability in Australia? $229US ($313aud) seems a pretty good price compared to what we'll get here too. Only store I can find stocking the first model has it for $425aud ($310US) so I'm a little scared to see what this model gets priced at!

Other people say we should wait Skylake, xe xe...
EVGA X99 Micro 2 = 230$
Intel i7-5820K = 299$ Micro Center
GSkill DDR4 3000MHz 4x4GB = 150$ Newegg

Total: 680$
For Intel i7 6 cores with new DDR4 Quad Channel.
With this price is very hard to someone decide to go on Skylake and Haswell except i5.
And off course every day more popular mini ITX Boards for Hadron.
But paying 350$ for some Maximus 7 Formula, i7-4790K for 350$ and 200$ for 16GB DDR3 Dual Channel is bad.

I like these cubic SATA connectors as EVGA install on Xtreme motherboards.

They need to move Voltage read points probably because Motherboard layout.
You see battery is moved exactly near Voltage read points to leave place for fast M.2.
Only the should give 4 SATA cables. I like these SATA cables more than any other.
EVGA should write in specification for X99 Micro 2 - Intel USB 3.1 Supported /Type C.
In specification is only 6x USB 3.0 and 2x USB 2.0... and 1x USB 3.1.

People in USA are really lucky, 220$ nice X99 motherboard.
That's same as 200e for people in EU... And super fast EVGA support, no reason to worry really.
Europe Union should work to hardware become more afordable, special hardware from USA and their brands.
In USA I swear I would rather buy X99 Micro 2 and Supremacy block, Coolstream SE radiator and X-Res 100 than only Rampage 5 Extreme USB 3.1.

Re: X99 Micro 2 - New motherboard announced! 2015/11/04 16:30:04 (permalink)
Just got my micro 2, all worked good to begin with. Turned it on this morning and it had lost my m.2 Samsung xp941 256gb ssd. Just booted to the bios until I turned off m.2 support, rebooted, turned it on and enabled the extra support for s2 and s3 (?) and it found it then booted into windows.

Another interesting part - My EVGA Ttitan X sc2 with EK waterblock and EK backplate fit fine with the IO cover. I did leave the bottom screw a little loose, but there is enough flex in it to allow the card to fit. Also - there is a protective strip so no need to worry about that IO Cover touching electrical connections on a gpu with no backplate.

I went to install windows and it booted into my old install from my Asus rampage V extreme build.... and everything worked! Updated drivers just incase and had a few re login messages from Microsoft but i could game straight away.. so there's that.

BTW - I ordered from Newegg delivered to Australia.
