Getting back to the original post I say that if you don't like the work conditions stay on unemployment for a bit longer and try to obtain more IT certification or education that would make you more valuable to an employer.

This. Believe it or not Candle this is absolutely true. The more certificates you have, the more valuable you are. I understand you don't want to go to school to spend money, but this will set you apart from the regular IT Joe's. I know experience in the IT field counts as well, but you wont reach to your satisfactory pay.  To be honest, I consider you very lucky getting pay 43k with just experience.
As far as the job in the assembly line, just quit and stay unemployed, your skills/knowledge/years of experience are getting wasted, don't settle for less, unless you do not have any other choice.  Keep applying and the best of luck to you. (always practice on your answer to this question:  "What set you apart from the rest of the individuals being interviewed with more certificates than you?" If you know how to answer this, you will ace any interview.

I know the anwser to that question and this is how I answer the question, what makes you the best candidate for this job. I tend to say along these lines. I started tearing apart my own computer when I was 8, it was as easy to me, as eating dinner, it came naturally. I may not know as much as everyone else applying, but give me 24 hours and I'll learn any system you need me to learn, and accomplish anything. I am the best candidate not because of what I know right now, but because I have a desire to learn and grow, I will never know everything in IT, but my goal is a solid 99% by the time I retire.

That usually wins me a lot of brownie points, and I was hired before on just that kind of statement :P

candle_86, I don't know you at all, but I can tell you that without education/certifications, and attention to detail, i.e., spelling, of course you won't have trouble finding a job at $43,000/year...the problem is that you'll be making $43,000/yr when you're 50, also!
Experience can get you in the door in IT -- but much more often than not, education/certifications, and attention to detail will move you up the ladder wherever you work!
I hire IT people several times a year, anywhere in the 70K-120K/year ranges, and that has been my experience over the past 30 years.  I got my start just as you did after serving in the military, but I also went back and finished my college degree in Computer Information Systems before I really got anywhere with the company!
Regardless, however you proceed going forward, I wish you the best of luck and I hope that you find the job(s) that keep you going!

yea I have great attention to detail, I spell things related to my job fine, and never ever overlook anything, I have yet to be told to pay more attention on any job or that I missed something. As for other work, well I just got a call back from Verizon, they want me for their level 3 position for network analysis, they wanted a candidate that was a self motivated person that didn't have alot of network experience that could be taught excavate how Verizon wants it, but with a strong technical background. Guess who starts working next week for more money than I made previously :P

Well ended up not going to New Mexico, but I am working again, now working for the University of Texas as a Level II Desktop Tech. The promotion to Level III only requires certification/experince/an opening so I can move up.

I am thinking you are on the government cheese, get off the cheese and take the job.  Kinda sad that anyone living off the system would turn down a job because it is not the perfect job they are looking for.  Keep looking for a better job while you are working.

+1
You have to keep working or learning.  Otherwise you can get stuck in a rut.

Edit: read more of the thread and therefore less relevant, but still my opinion

Without reading this entire post, I think if the job pays you more than unemployment benefits, then you'd be better off taking the job! Trouble is these days is that people think they are over qualified to take a job offer.
In my line of work I have to hand over my phone, be subjected to body searches, have my truck searched and be escorted from one place to another......Yes it's only when I deliver to military sites and not something that is a day long thing in my job....But I am greatful and much better off than I was when I was on benefits. So yeh, don't be a job snob because it will win you no friends other than those who already don't have a job and think along the same moochy lines as you!

This thread makes my head hurt...

The answer is easy. Are you looking for a job or a career? They are called "Job interviews" because it is a two way street. Find what you enjoy doing and never look back. Getting a degree along the way is pure gold.

And as far as unemployment... Most States require, once you take a new job, that you are employed for another year before you can get benefits again. Others will recalculate your benefits, but now it is calculating from the pay they had given you if you leave before the year is up... So you LOSE. Make the best choice for you...

Congrats on the new location and job!
