Hello, I'm using a EVGA 980 sc acx 2.0 and Acer XB270HU monitor (27" 2560*1440 144hz), Right now my idle clock speed is 1012mhz and my idle temp is 34°C, is this normal for a signal monitor running at 2560*1440 with a 144hz refresh rate? I have EVGA Precision X installed and I have set my fans to 20% at 30°C.

34C is really cool for a GPU when idling and you would typically expect to see ~50-70C underload. So 34C is fine but the idle clock could be kind of off compaired to a 970. Maybe another 980 owner can you help you there.
Keep in mind the card doesn't take any damage unless it's over like 85C unlike other PC hardware. Even when it's at 85C, it would take months of that temp to damage the card. (Don't worry about the temps)

144hz for some people can cause higher idle clock/temps. Just search *high temps 144hz desktop* 144hz can cause higher clock/temps on desktop try setting to 120hz. Just keep in mind though games that have no refresh option will probably default to 120hz My cards avr 30-34c with fans idle and run at like 135Mhz but i have 120hz but even when i temporally had 144hz gsync i didn't recall having this problem.

I'm using 2x 970's with a 144hz monitor, and it idles at 185 while running at 144hz refresh. Or, is it because i'm using GSYNC? Does that make a difference?

The 970's have a special BIOS that does that. But 1000+mhz seems high for idle. If you take off your fan curve you would still see low temps across the board. I've noticed people are paranoid about their GPU temps which is silly because the cards are designed to operate at 75C-80C. Your not helping your card by keeping it cool, although it could let you OC more.

Its just interesting to me when people complain their card runs too hot and it's only 75C. You weren't doing it but I've seen others. But they usually end up setting their fan curve to 80-100% (jet mode) and their card life probably ends up going down all over a 2C diffrience. But I did notice when I replaced my thermal paste with Artic Silver 5, the temp under load in Furmark went down 10% (8C). Keep in mind Furmark isn't practical gaming load so you can easily reach 80C. Another thing you can do to get your card hot is run stress tests at a low resolution and force it into 1000fps and that will also bring out the coil whine.

It wouldn't change the amount of heat the card put off, but it would change the temp of the card. So, it wouldn't really effect the temp of your room. For example, I have a 95W CPU and it may be only 90% efficient and 10% is lost in heat (about 10W). That example 10% wouldn't change if I did a diffrient cooling option although it would help disperse the heat of the CPU (keep the actual chip cooler). NOTE: Those are fake numbers.

Keeping the card cooler increases the lifespan of the card. A card running at 60C 24-7-365 will outlast a card running at 80C 24-7-365.
