The whole degree thing is tied to the company covering their ass with there insurance companies, that's why it doesn't matter what it the paper is and where you got it from, or even when most likely. Its always about money.....and lawsuits. They have to have some poor schlub to blame and fire when upper management screws up.

Name one job you can't do without a degree, what single field is it 100% impossible to do without paying a school thousands of dollars? None, every single job can be learned without a degree, if someone
a doctor doesn't have to go to school to be a doctor, he has to pass the state medical exam, now I'm aware alot of states require that you attend a medical school before your allowed to take said test, but the ability to know how to be a doctor is all public, you can get any medical textbook ect without ever going to school, and be a doctor in all but offical title. So again

Sigh.

A. http://www.ama-assn.org/a...coming-physician.page?

B. When it comes time to do surgery on you, your wife or your child who do you pick... the guy who learned from the Internet and some textbooks or the guy who graduated top of his class from Harvard? Be truthful.
The guy that learned from textbooks and Internet would be my preference... But I also believe there should be no licensing requirements on any profession... It's my choice where I go... If I get butchered by an Internet DR it's not his fault it's mine for not reading reviews and looking at his reputation... So you might want to take what I say with a grain of salt... Or no salt if you don't roll that way!

it took me 2 hours to get to an interview, and when they called to ask me to come in, it was to discuss the level 2 hardware support role, not entry level.

I edited my last post.

Did you drive 2 hours to the interview, or did you drive an hour there and an hour back?

"I drove 2 hours to an interview" may be on the side of semantics, but there is a huge difference in the two.

I drove an hour away to get that interview 53 miles away isn't the same as I drove 2 hours to an interview.

Employers look at things like that too.

Also, you can get angry, but your lack of spelling, capitalization, and punctuation on the forum can speak volumes as well. Did the job posting require a degree? If it was listed with a degree, then they can look at it as you wasting their time as well. It is immature of them to call you in for an interview, of course, but many people in this market would kill for $11 an hour.

2 hours their, 2 hours back, in good traffic it would take an hour, but i had to take a few freeways that only move between 1am to 4am to get to this interview. Also the job posting did not list a degree, it asked for 2 years of experience and that's about it. Had they requested a degree, I would have still applied because some companies do waive that requirement for experience, and talked to them about it before driving 2 hours for an interview. Funny enough the job posting was updated yesterday afternoon to list a degree is required.

Yeah, that would be extremely annoying and I feel for you and if you had printed or taken a screen shot of the listing, I would use that to see where they listed a degree as a requirement, since it didn't show it at the time you applied. It may not do much good, but then again, it could get you a foot in the door.

That sucks. I've heard of similar situations. You had a chance to take that job into your hands though... I wouldn't be too hung up on it, I'd treat it as a learning experience.

My account manager had a similar situation to yours, where he went in applying for a position and they offered him a grunt job. He responded very firmly what he was there for and let them know he was not there to settle for any less. The job was all ready given to someone else and the interview was just a formality... He ended up getting the position and the guy that had the job ended up getting the grunt position because he got showed up in the interview. Even though the other guy looked a lot better on paper, you have to convince them why you are going to be a better choice.

Sometimes it is a requirement due to the demands of their customers. Back when I was a calibration tech for the li-ion battery manufacturer all I had was in house and hands on training. That is all I required to do the job. However when Apple decided to make us a supplier one of the requirements was that I get my ASQ Certified Calibration Technician certification within 6 months so that is what I did. That way Apple could say all their suppliers parts are traceable and in compliance with iso and that all personel are cecertified or had the required degree.....required, not necessarily necessary. I see both sides.

Small companies or sole proprietorships can do what they want.  It is usually not a policy item, but the requirement of the owner to help them spererate or diferentiate thier company from the crowd.  They can say to a large company that they only hire college grads or advertise this as an experience factor.  It has no legal or insurance implications.  These are policy decisions, as these skills are not regulated in any way.  It has nothing to do with what an individual can or cannot do, but the decision by management, either in the form of an owner or through the policy or job description of a company, for who and what skill sets they want to hire.  There are instances when there are regulations on what type of person can do what job, but IT has none of these specific examples, as medical, engineering and science usually do.  I feel for your frustration.  The travel things sucks too.  Maybe there is something better around the corner.  Sorry for your rejection and annoyance with this particular process.

If you had taken the $11/hr job, couldn't you simply have moved up into the other job that you applied for?

I find it rather petty to take a stance on college degree's being worthless compared to hands on experience and "self learning". I was homeschooled nearly my entire education. After Sophomore year of High School, I decided to attend private school at a local top end school. I graduated with very near a 4.0 GPA, hundreds of service hours, team captain of a varsity sport, headmaster's lists, top 10% class rank, very close to a perfect SAT score. However, none of this could make up for my homeschooling time, which I am 100% convinced was the reason I was not accepted into the United States Air Force Academy, despite receiving a Congressional nomination to go. Every other school I applied to for college, I got in, got merit money, etc, but none of them came close to the desire I had to go to Colorado Springs.

However, I must say I find it rather liberating that I didn't go. I'm now 2 years through my Bachelor's degree, and am working now to set up a corporation so that Day 1 after I graduate I can start hiring my classmates and professionals. Sometimes life makes choices for you, if you didn't get the job no point dwelling on it.

None, every single job can be learned without a degree, if someone takes the time to learn and study. Collage is simply a way to prove you don't have the attention span to learn something independently and require someone to hold your hand.

Well you aren't exactly a Doctor if you don't have the right to practice, are you? You're just a person with theoretical solutions. Or, a person practicing medicine without a license which would be a criminal.
