I have heard some people have success by folding or benching for a long period, like 24 hours or so. Running the card hot seems to change something in the coils (potting compound?) that quietens them down. Doesn't always work but worth a try.

If the resin/binding compound used in the coils was not properly cured it could cause changes, but if that's the case you might have better luck just isolating the coils and using a heatgun

Great idea! If my card arrives with coil whine, I will try this.

I had a day one EVGA SC ACX 1.0 970 with coil whine so bad I could hear it across the room.  Sent it back to Amazon immediately, ordered a MSI Gaming 970 that also had coil whine, though not as bad.  Gave up on that card and ordered Asus 970, finally got a quiet card at that point  :(

Just remember that was half-sarcasm!

I would not recommend a heat gun unless you are experienced in electronic components, since that's the easiest way to ruin your card! (aside from dropping, microwaving, etc)

My brand new GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 has some extreme coil whine too. The moment I switch to a game the card begins to whine so loud, the dog runs away.
Seems that EVGA would replace the card, since the coil whine is so bad on this one. I called the support hotline, started World of Warcraft, deactivated Vsync while on the game menu (high fps) and the EVGA support-guy said I could get that one replaced. It's so loud, he could clearly hear the coil whine through the phone, while I was sitting on my desk with the computer beneath it and closed.
It even wakes up my girlfriend who sleeps in another room.

I'm not sure if I should bother with RMA, if I risk just getting another whiny card as a replacement. Maybe I should just return it to the shop and get something else. This is far beyond acceptable.

Haven't been gaming on my main rig since I got my RMA for a bad GTX 970, however since Lords of the Fallen was released I have and I haven an extreme case of coil whine. It's at the point where I"m wondering if I can request an RMA up to a ACX 2.0 or just sell the card. Didn't have nearly as many issues with my EVGA 780 that's for sure.

I had coil whine on my GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 "Only fans are silent, cause its almost never on", my older monitor was VGA, had to use an adapter but itlooked like visual tearing when playing games, i was advised to RMA the card, , same issue occurring, this squealing noise when playing game, and same issue with my monitor, had to buy a new monitor and i wasted money shipping back to Evga i guess.. :(

There will be no fix for coil whine. It's a hardware issue. You just need to live with that or enable v-sync or use some program to cap your fps to a level where whine is not audible...

Evga 970 is flawed. I know. I had 5 of them. Each and every one coil whines no matter what other hardware components you try to change. 3 out of 5 black screens of death regularly. The quality control is THAT awful. I think these problems are much more serious than this VRAM controversy.

Just discovered a rather loud buzzing sound coming from my GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0. It is only two-three weeks old. The sound begins when a hires graphics game is started and gradually fades away as the card warms up (however, it never goes away completely). Profile of the noise is directly connected to the picture displayed on the screen: black background with few bright spots produces a distinctive ticking noise, while full-screen graphics produces an even buzz.

Going on my 3rd RMA. The 3.5GB Vram was a Problem but not like the Dam Coil Whine. I'm Getting sick of this i can hear it 10 Feet Away. Purchase a New eVGA 850W G2 PSU and it dint solve anything. I Hope evga can fix or send me a card that will not have this Problem. eVGA told me they would Test the Card before sending one back.

I Setup my new eVGA 850W G2 Power Supply still have bad Coil Whine. I Sent a email to eVGA to RMA and have the new Card Tested or Swich for a Different GTX 970 Model & Tested.
I Like the Support and Quality From eVGA and i wont Give up. The 970 is a Problem Coil Card. I Should be able to get a GTX 970 with No Coil Whine. I Purchase the 10 Year Plan other thing i like about eVGA. 2972-KR ACX 2.0
