Faulty Evga Titan X?

Hi, having an issue with my Evga Titan SC X, in both the bios and GPU-Z it shows as only running at PCI-E 3.0 x1.

It downclocks on desktop and GPU-Z states its running at x1 1.1, when I try the render test or a game it goes to PCI-E 3.0 x1. Tried setting Gen 3 in bios that made no difference.

Spec is;

i7 5280k,
Evga X99 Classified (latest bios),
Evga Titan SC X (tried last two  drivers),
850 pro (with a brand new Windows 8.1 install),
 AX1200i.

I only changed to this setup yesterday, had been running an i7 4770k in an Asus  Maximus VI Extreme fine, until last month when I turned PC on and I couldn't get anything on the display. Found the Titan X had stopped working in the top PCI-E slot, moved it down the board and it worked fine but at a maximum of PCI-E 3.0 x4. Thought the board was dying so decided to use it as an excuse to change, but is it my card at fault?

Any ideas?

It sounds like it could be the board. Call EVGA and try to get an RMA through tech support at 888-881-3842. They will likely attempt to trouble shoot and if that doesn't work then they usually RMA.

I just don't see how a defect with the GPU would cause it not to work in a slot of the motherboard, yet work at x4 in another. Even if it's a x4 slot, why is not working in the first slot? (Bad motherboard?)

Try to get an RMA on the board and if the replacement doesnt work then EVGA RMA's are generally very easy going so you can probably get the card done later.

It sounds like it could be the board. If you called EVGA then they would probably blame the boards manufacture too. I personally hate when company's blame the other company's when their stuff isn't working, but I really think it's probably your board.

X99 Classified is an EVGA board... So, a manufacturer blaming themself is counterproductive.

Ah, you edited the original post.

BigTelHols, have you tried repeating the cpu and checking the socket for any bent pins that may be causing a limit? I know it may seem far fetched, but boards act strange with a single bent pin. It doesn't take long to reset, so that may be a quick check alternative.

I figured that he had an ASUS motherboard because he was talking about his Maximus board.

Hi, thank you for your help.

OK, just moved the Titan X from the 1st slot to the 4th slot on my Evga Classified mobo and it shows as running 3.0 x4 in bios and GPUZ???

The card ran at the same speed when I moved it down in the Asus board.

My original PC was an i7 4770k in an Asus  Maximus VI Extreme, card stopped working in first slot (ie no display on either monitor or TV), moved it down and worked at 3.0 x4. I thought my board was dying, so bought an i7 5820K, Evga X99 Classified. Card running at 3.0 x1 in first slot and 3.0 x4 in forth slot.

Hi, yes I have late last-night when I first built the PC, couldn't see anything wrong and aside from this issue (touch wood ) PC is working fine. I've played Battlefield 4 & Killing Floor 2 today, I just wasn't getting the performance I should be

2 motherboards, 2 CPU's and similar issues. I would say it's probably the card through some weird or strange circumstance. I have never seen it before, but it's possible that somehow the PCI interface of the card was damaged. So you can call EVGA at 888-881-3842 and go through tech support. Advise them of your situation and what you have done.

I would say at this point you pretty much narrowed down the issue to the GPU so you should have no issue getting a replacement through tech support. I reccomend calling as they guide you through the process and fill out some forums on your behalf so you don't have to.

I agree 100%. I don't think it is coincidence to have two separate boards and cpus display the same thing.

You could also refer them to this thread when you call, and they may get the information or see something we missed that may help you.

    Thanks for your help gentlemen.

I'm stumped so guess it RMA time. Don't know what else to try except another card, I've updated to the latest bios, loaded the defaults & set my boot order. The PCI-E speed is in the bios and I've had it at both auto and Gen 3 with no difference in result. Nothing is overclocked.

"EVGA at 888-881-3842 and go through tech support", I'm in the UK, is that the number still applicable? Thanks.

    An Update;

Been in touch with EVGA and they have approved my RMA. Just need to find a reliable courier now and ship the card back to Germany.

Bought a second hand Nvidia KFA2 GTX 780 HOF, swapped the Titan X for the 780 and booted to bios and it was showing as PCI-E 3.0 x16. In windows GPU-Z shows the same, so its definitely my Titan X causing the problem, hopefully Evga find the same fault.

So an update, my replacement card arrived from Evga today, not only was the card not in sealed retail packaging so for all I know could be used/refurb, etc. it was also a standard Titan X not a Superclocked one that I sent them

So much for Evga customer service

P.S. On a happier note in both the bios and GPU-Z card is running at PCI-E 3.0 x16. So the fault was definitely with my old card.

I can't say for certain it's a refurb but it wasn't in retail packaging, just a plain box with Evga on the top. They have sent me a standard Titan X when I had a Titan X SuperClock. So after paying £930 four months ago I now have a card that could be a used and abused refurb, that is the model below my original card.

If your card was 31 days or older when placing the rma they would send out a re-certified card. If the card was less than 31 days old when placing the rma they should have sent you a new in box replacement. Only difference between a standard titan x & titan x superclocked is the vbios which you can change yourself.

Your right, I could flash the bios, but I shouldn't have to. A big company like Evga should be able to replace like for like on a card that is still current and only a few months old.

I agree, you shouldn't have to flash the card yourself. Contact tech support and tell them to send you the titan x superclocked vbios to your e-mail. Tech support will send the vbios as requested with detailed instructions on how to update the vbios. Unless you want to send the card all the way back to them again.

If we did send you the wrong product, we can definitely RMA it again for the proper card if you like. As for the card being recertified, that is normal for a card purchased 4 months ago.

Where is it showing that it's a non-SC card at? I checked your account as well as the RMA records, and I show the card we sent you was supposed to be another Titan X SC model 2992-KR, which you can confirm by looking under My Products. You can also run PrecsionX and see what the card is reading as, if the card is an SC it will say so there.

Hi JaesonW, I've just checked under my products and you are correct it does show a Titan X SC as the RMA
In GPU-Z its showing the standard default clocks and when I click on the lookup section it takes me to a standard Titan X. Also both Evga Precision X16 and MSI Afterburner list my card as a GTX Titan X
