This is probably a NOOB question but I have an X79 Classified motherboard and I have no idea how to determine what BIOS version I currently have. Can someone tell me how I can find out? I didn't see anything obvious in setup and CPU-Z (1.64.0) has a BIOS section on the Mainboard tab that says:
Brand - American Megatrends Inc.
Version - 4.6.5
Date 01/18/2012
Thanks,
Brad

If you enter the Bios on startup there will be a version listed on the first page.

Thanks! It was 0.32 with a date of 1/18/2002. CPU-Z gets the date correct but the version of 4.6.5 isn't the same as 0.32 or 032. I flashed to 044 which shows in setup as 0.44. From this thread, I'm not sure 047 is worth the risk. I'll wait a while and see if there are any official EVGA replies.

Is this really a good question for tech support, though? Presumably, they're aware of the idle issue. They're aware of the UEFI temperature issue. If all they can say is "we know", then why ask them instead of coming here to see if we can get an answer out of someone else?

Exactly, everyone knows the 047 bios is flawed and a new one should be forthcoming, but why take so long in doing so?

IMO, take as long as you need to get the next version right BUT let us know officially what "everyone knows...".

A simple acknowledgement that 047 is flawed from someone at EVGA would be most welcome.

Hmmm... still would love to see you guys create an ISO image that can be burned to CD, or USB. I think it would think it would really reduce your tech support time. :) (I use linux only) I did manage to find an old Win98 boot disk that I was able to get onto a flash  drive, so now I can easily do the updates, but an ISO image would make it more stable and easier for you guys frankly

Anyhow... I just replaced my MB after USB3.0 issues. It had a .20 firmware, so I downloaded .47 and after firing up, my tvcard video is very choppy now. Like it is dropping every 5-10 frames. At first I thought it must just be a BIOS setting, but reading through the above posts, I'm thinking I need to go back to an older version. I just happened to have .45 saved, but I was quite surprised to see that I could not find any data about what the previous BIOS updates did, and I did not see previous BIOS downloads. ? What is up with that? I want to know what changes/fixes have been done from .20 to .47. It also appears we MUST be able to get an older version of the BIOS in case of a screw up. Where can I find these? At this point I'll just assume it is here, and I just missed it.

Thanks in advance

You can get the BIOS's here:
http://www.evga.com/support/download/default.aspx

You have to un-check the "Show latest driver" box to get the old versions to show. I'd recommend 044 rather than 045, as 045 caused one CPU to be at 50% all the time.

Well dang.. I knew it had to be something stupid I was doing. ha! Thanks much. I did not notice the 50% in linux, but to be honest, wasn't paying that much attention, since everything seemed to be rocking. To save time, I'll take you advice and go to .44 and see if the TV video goes back to normal. To be honest, I'm not real hopeful. I think I may have turned something on in bios that is doing. I guess I should go default first, and check. Yea.. I think that makes more sense. Will report back.

Interesting: I just went back to default settings in .47 and still slow. Backed up to .44 and voilla! Video is back to normal. Now I run Linux, so maybe this is a little different from what you are seeing, but if it would help, I can provide a great deal of boot up detail. The journal if you will. I will attach the current one, and if you think it will help, I will put .47 in one of the other BIOS chips and provide it. Hmm... I don't see where I can attach and it is 1700 lines of data, so I will just provide one screen...

Or you can cave in and give EVGA $200 more to trade in for a Dark Motherboard.

I paid $200 for my FTW, so it would be like I paid list for a Dark.

So I have two new 780s - am I forced to run this bios (with cpu idle stuck at 7%), or is there another that will work with these cards?

First time in 10 years i changed from asus to another company with the evga x79 sli board. I was bit dissapointed with this last bios 047, performance is noticeable bad in benchmarks. One thread of a core is continuesly busy in idle, like a poster ment before. Intel Speedstep does not work.
So after downgrading to 045 it works perfectly good now. Cpu is back on 1-2% on Idle and Speedstep is downclocking again. For example, got same performance now in Unigine Valley on Ultra like bevore on High. So for me 045 is best choice only the SAS entry sucks.

Is the X79 Dark using the same chipset as the current ftw & classy X79? If so, why would anyone expect a better board with newer bios?  Clearly the current X79 boards aren't any better (from speculations) with each bios update, therefore would be changing going to the X79 dark? I'm just curious

Is the X79 Dark using the same chipset as the current ftw & classy X79? If so, why would anyone expect a better board with newer bios?  Clearly the current X79 boards aren't any better (from speculations) with each bios update, therefore would be changing going to the X79 dark? I'm just curious

Why? Maybe it has to do with the fact the competitions X79 boards work much better than all of EVGAs current X79 offering. Also the X79 is not being replaced anytime soon. Going into the X99 (rumor) with a strong X79 board could be seen better than leading in with the mess that is the X79 FTW and Classified.

I have both a X79 SLI and a P9X79 Deluxe, and the EVGA was easier to OC the exact same processor model and has been more stable at the exact same Mhz.

So my personal experience has been the EVGA computer has been far less expensive and rock solid for me.

I've overclocked both manufacturer's boards, and yes I agree it seems easier with the EVGA, but an experienced user will get a higher OC with the Asus.  I have one set of USB ports on the back of my FTW which I cannot use without either a USB surge warning every 2 minutes from windows or all devices plugged into just quit working. Other than that, I am stable even using Windows 8.1 Pro Preview.

You should be looking at Step-Up to the DARK MhzManiac, I would say now the DARK is out that
EVGA will pretty much sweep their original X79 boards under the carpet.
If they could produce a BIOS for the Classy and FTW that actually fixed all the issues,
they would have done it by now.

Jacob, you had mentioned that DARK users would see a new revision of the IVB-E BIOS later this week.  Well, this week is almost over and I don't see anything (yet) on the download page for the board.  Is there any new information on this?

Gotcha, thanks -- I can hold out for an official release with more fixes.  The only issue I'm seeing at the moment is that I'm randomly getting stuck at B3 when the board is first going through its initial startup process -- It's nothing that pressing the restart button once or twice doesn't fix. ;)
