Re: EVGA SR-X - BIOS 0.08 Released 2013/12/20 23:43:50 (permalink)
i read the doc and i wonder if http://www.evga.com/support/manuals/files/270-SE-W888.pdf
has an error at page 23 : pci-e 6 is marked as a 4x while pci-e 5 is a 16x/8x
pci-e 6 should be 8x
pci-e 7 is 8 x or 16x ?

if i look at cross then the doc seems right . may be you should update the board lines so sli 4x and 3x would be better :
from this :

1 – PCI-E x16/8 slot
2 – PCI-E x8 slot
3 – PCI-E x16/8 slot
4 – PCI-E x8 slot
5 – PCI-E x16/8 slot
6 – PCI-E x4 slot
7 – PCI-E x8 slot

to :
1 – PCI-E x8 slot
2 – PCI-E x16/8 slot
3 – PCI-E x8 slot
4 – PCI-E x16/8 slot
5 – PCI-E x8 slot
6 – PCI-E x16/8 slot
7 – PCI-E x8 slot

sli 4 x would use slots 1 - 3 - 5 - 7 at 8x
sli 3 x would use slots 2 - 4 - 6 at 16 x

Re: EVGA SR-X - BIOS 0.08 Released 2013/12/22 17:31:19 (permalink)
It's great that there's still new work being done on this board, so thank you for your efforts :).

I've just upgraded from the 015 bios to ther 0.08 bios on my Sr-X.

Running a pair of e5-2680's (2.7ghz base clock, 3.1 all core turbo and 3.3 single core turbo).

I haven't had an issue with hyperthreading like the others which is nice, but  it's still having some problems:

  • No turbo boost. CPU's are being limited to their base clock multi. So my 2680's are stuck at 2700mhz and won't go any higher. CPU-Z reports 27 as the highest multi instead of 33. Had no problems with this on the 015 bios. I've basically lost 400mhz on every core under load with this new bios. I've had a look through all the cpu settings I could find in the bios but couln't find anything for turbo.
  • Quite unstable. Running a fresh install of win7 64. with only the intel inf drivers and cpu-z installed. She's BSOD'd twice in the 10 mins I've run it just trying to open cpu-z.
  • My XMP timings are not coming across. running quad channel G skill sniper 1600 ram. The bios detects that it has XMP 1 enabled but when I set it, it runs much looser timings (11-11-11 instead of 9-9-9).
  • Scrolling down on the memory timings page has consistently locked the bios screen. Num lock key still works but the bios is unresponsive.
I'm not trying to be negative and I'm glad EVGA has created a new bios to support ivy-e and made a gui bios. But unfortunately i'm going to have to try and roll back (if I can). The loss of turbo boost kills what I was running this for (folding@home) and it's quite unstable. I'll try my E5-2680v2's shortly and see how they go. But without turbo boost I'm expecting poor benchmark results.

Re: EVGA SR-X - BIOS 0.08 Released 2013/12/25 14:07:14 (permalink)
Regarding a new BIOS version, I am not sure why was this omitted, but there's no way to select the primary video card for boot.

The only option you have is "off board" which is silly, especially if you have two, or more graphics cards.

Since this is basic functionality I really hope EVGA will implement it in the next version.

Re: EVGA SR-X - BIOS 0.08 Released 2013/12/26 13:10:16 (permalink)
There's something seriously wrong with this 008 BIOS when it comes to Power Management. With the last official 020 BIOS C- and P- states get reported properly, but this beta just does nothing.

I was wrecking my brains trying to figure out why am I not getting C/P-States from a totally different point of view assuming 008 BIOS was good. Alas, I was wrong and after switching to the old 020 BIOS lo-and-behold my C/P-States arrays filled up with values.

I really do not have time to compare SSDTs from the old and the new BIOS, as problem might not even be in them.

Either way, this is a serious regression from EVGA that ought to be fixed in the most immediate future (next beta release).

@jcgeny_fr [http //forums.evga.com/FindPost/2081786] :
Your assumptions about the width (x4/x8/x16) of the PCI-E slots cannot be correct.

Here I could find a detailed picture from the board:
http //content.hwigroup.net/images/products/xl/147841/evga_classified_srx.jpg
and this is the layout of a PCI-E socket:
http //cfile3.uf.tistory.com/original/1668D21E4A793AA1229E75

When magnifying the slots section on the board image, you can easily count the number of lanes connected at each slot.
These are in accordance with the manual and the printing on the board:

PCIE_X16/X8_1
PCIE_X8_2
PCIE_X16/X8_3
PCIE_X8_4
PCIE_X16/X8_5
PCIE_X4_6
PCIE_X8_7

Dear sirs
I'm an avid fan of your products but I am feeling a little passed over in getting these issues resolved on the sr-x board. While I admire the improvements that have been made, I have yet to experience a problem free bios for the sr-x

Could I ask specifically if the issues as reported are being resolved or not?

Issues:
1. SAS array disappears and has to be rebuilt with all data lost. This occurs WHENEVER you make any changes to the bios
2. Reboot hangs and reset hangs and restart hangs. Only cold boot works.

Can I please have these resolved without having some other  functionality removed or broken from the fix?

Thank you

The SAS array changes from 8 member disks in the array to 8 non-member discs whenever the bios is accessed.

This is the biggest headache, I ask again, is it being resolved?

Re: EVGA SR-X - BIOS 0.08 Released 2014/02/06 17:03:13 (permalink)
Dear sir,

may I have my query answered?

THX

THE SRX is unstable with the SAS in the last several bios releases. SAS raid get destroyed with access to the bios. On BIOS 20 and BIOS .08 instability is persistent on SAS raid
On bios .08 only cold boot will work, reset or restart hangs on code 65

I have two srx boards, both display same behavior.
behavior is independent of video card selection, unstable behavior is exhibited with only a single lowly NVidia 620 card as well as 4 titan GTX. With only 1 video device on the whole board, behavior is consistent and displays same issues.

I've asked for an update but I've not heard back in several requests.
This is evga's flagship most powerful build board and I have not heard a peep of support on this issue.

BIOS .08 has other reported issues

IS EVGA STILL SUPPORTING FIXING THIS BOARD?
IS EVGA RELEASING A BIOS WITH THE FIXED REEPORTED ISSUES? (turbo unavailable on the newer chips, SAS, reset, SAS raid etc)
IF EVGA HAS ABANDONED THE BOARD PLEASE LET ME KNOW

If you are still trying to fix the issues then maybe tech support could let me know when I call, or at least post it in this forum or even an email

Thank You for your support

Any updates yet?
I not happy with this BIOS at all.
I'm still using the Beta Version I was sent ages ago (pre release of 21) that works with issues (but at least my SAS works)

IF EVGA HAS ABANDONED THE BOARD PLEASE LET ME KNOW
as my last phone call to support, kinda gave me a hint that its over for the XEON boards

Re: EVGA SR-X - BIOS 0.08 Released 2014/02/19 00:40:31 (permalink)

I bought a couple of these wonderful 4 GHz processors for 3600 € ($5000 bucks)
to end up with a 3.4 GHz slow-energy light-bulb, cause SR-X's BIOS is a dud.

After more than three months passed since the eleven/eleven 00β release,
I believe EVGA does neither support the XR-X any longer nor this thread.

Let's simply check it (as selling is just allowed on the EVGA Marketplace):

I will throw my SR-X (with a fantastic triple β bios) down the drain!

one would think EVGA would mind the black eye.

I'm curios why support/communication for them has taken such a plunge

Re: EVGA SR-X - BIOS 0.08 Released 2014/02/19 16:35:08 (permalink)
To be fair, the fault is not just with EVGA. Intel was the one who pulled the rug under everyone when they released locked SB Xeons. This effectively caused all Xeon motherboard OEMs to lose money they invested into R&D of LGA2011 boards, and sales of the same, because of the assumption that everyone would be over clocking these new Xeon CPUs.

Really the issue is that we have just two manufacturers of CPUs: Intel and AMD, and it's really a "good cop, bad cop" game between them. I do not believe they are competitors at all - on the contrary they appear to me as the arms of the same (parasitic) body. Sadly it's the consumers who are none the wiser to actually see through this charade, and boycott Intel (and AMD). Someone might say "But if we boycott them, what is left there?"

Actually, there's plenty, and perhaps even better than Intel/AMD, who have been monopolizing the market for way too long. There are no real new advancements made in the architecture and the only changes happen in shrinking the die size (there's an end to that), stacking cores into layers (woop-dee-doo), or increasing the frequency (that's almost gone as far as it could, unless you want to cryo-freeze your CPU).

In contrast, an ARM with its RISC architecture could offer ubiquitous computing power for a fraction of power (and emitted heat) required on Intel/AMD in a smaller form factor. And you could probably stack the cores, and pair CPUs into as many as you like just like with Intel. But there's really no push in that direction because these duopolies dominate the market and people continue to support them by buying into their propaganda. Heck, did you see the new Xeon E7 v2 CPUs, what a joke that is...and the price is even more laughable.

Mark my words, Apple will move back to ARM, drop Intel and merge OS X and iOS. Actually, the latter has already been going on for the past several major editions of the OS X anyways. Some day in the near future, we will see an ARM based MacBook Pro, or in-between the MBP and iPad that will become a new mobile standard for portable computing. I am not a huge fan of what "corporate" Apple is doing, but at least they are pushing the innovation forward, even if it's for the purpose of profit and monopoly, at least there's movement.

Back to EVGA...so where the hell is our new BIOS? :)

I do not want to over clock the Xeon E5-2687Wv2.
I just want to have its specified features enabled.

Have a look at
intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/turbo-boost/turbo-boost-technology.html
or  at ark.intel.com where 4 GHZ are specified for the Turbo-Boost mode (workload 1 kernel) down to
3.4 GHz (workload full 8 kernels). Again, this has nothing to do with over clocking.

EVGA has disabled Turbo-Boost in the 008 β BIOS.
I would be happy if I could revert to the 020 BIOS.
Unfortunately, the 008 β BIOS is the only one supporting Ivy Bridge v2.
So, there is no chance to fully enable these processors.

Having spent $5000 for the processors and a few hundred for the board,
one could either live with a lame duck or say good bye to EVGA.

These are the alternatives I currently think about:

Supermicro X9DA7
Supermicro X9DRG-QF
Intel W2600CR2
ASUS Z9PE-D8 WS

Any recommendations?

Re: EVGA SR-X - BIOS 0.08 Released 2014/02/20 16:21:03 (permalink)
I think you misunderstood what I wrote.

EVGA and other OEMs that built dual CPU LGA2011s had overclocking in mind because that's what the previous motherboard generation allowed for and what consumers did. It was assumed that Intel would continue the practice of leaving Xeons unlocked (rightfully so, we are paying a premium for the same silicon they put into pro-desktop) but Intel being the greedy monopolistic jerks they are, decided to screw everyone over. There's no technical reasoning why Xeons should be locked as far as I'm aware, and this was purely a marketing and sales low ball. Scumbags.

Now that your CPUs are doorstops, maybe I can buy them cheap off of you? :D

Kiddin', don't give up yet, maybe there's still something that can be done about the SR-X...

If you really want a different board, I'd look into Supermicro, as Asus does not get that stellar reviews and that new Gigabyte GA-7PESH3 apparently has some issues too, although not sure whether these issues are in Windows or not. Intel boards...never had those and to be honest I would not give Intel another dime if I could help it.

Here today's response from an EVGA Customer Service Team request:

Your Question:

After three months waiting, will there come a BIOS for Ivy Bridge v2 with Intel Turbo Boost enabled?
That information this is essential for me, because if not, I need to move to a different board.

Your Answer:

Hi,
got the feedback from our PM Team and unfortunately we are not able to give any kind of guarantee that it will work.

Regards,
EVGA Customer Service Team

@3dluvr:  Thank you for the. Just stored in the 3rd entry. I will test it upon next reboot.

Re: EVGA SR-X - BIOS 0.08 Released 2014/02/21 21:04:34 (permalink)
I've sent a few more support requests to EVGA for help with BIOS problems
seems like they don't care, or I get a dumb question back like what version am I running? or have you upgraded your bios to the latest
they don't appear to read/care about what has been said in the forums
so how do I get my money back on this board?
since from the start, this board has no done what it was sold as or meant to be able to do and in my book that's "false advertising"

to cut it short in bios 0.08, I can not use my hard disks connected to SAS, do a simple reboot or have EVGA graphics cards running in GEN 3 mode on a EVGA board.
so fit it, or give me my money back... Supermicro has the X9DAE, that has NVIDIA Geforce SLI Enabled and the HOLE board works
