    Re: EVGA SR-X - BIOS 0.08 Released 2013/11/12 06:08:33 (permalink)
Many many many thanks for sticking with us. I have updated as per instructions but haven't got any Xeon V2s to test yet. In the mean time I did have a few questions.

    1.  Is there any chance you could re-enable the manual override for PCI-e bifurcation? I have 3 video cards (in slots 3 5 and 7) and two peripheral cards in slots 1 and 2 and the only way I could get everything working without resource allocation issues (with BIOS 19) was to set the slots under IOU2 to 8x/8x instead of x16.  Cards are arranged as follows.

    Starting at the top.

Slot 1 - Auzentech Home Theatre HD soundcard
Slot 2 - Matrox Mojito Video editing card
    Slot 2 - GTX Titan
Slot 4 - Empty (disabled via DIP switch).
    Slot 5 - GTX Titan
Slot 6 - Empty (disabled via DIP switch).
    Slot 7 - GTX Titan.

I've also disabled the SAS boot orom, E-sata ports, bluetooth and onboard sound, none of which I use and had disabled in the previous BIOS.

The system appears to be working now but sometimes it does not post following a soft reset and I have to reset again manually (same problem as no_fate's below!).

I think this might be down to the bifurcation setting mentioned but if you have any other suggestions please let me know.

    2. When the system does post I'll often get a long beep instead of a short one....!  Booting then continues and everything seems to function normally, what could be the reason for this?

    3.  Finally, could you confirm that this bios fully supports all the Xeon V2 CPUs including the 12 core E5-2697?

Before I flash my motherboard, I'd like to know is this a *real* EFI based ROM with full EFI support, or just a new GUI slapped onto an old BIOS with couple of updates to microcode and SAS?

JacobF, could you please post a full change log for this release, detailing what are those "Various improvements/compatibility updates"?

    Thanks.

So, I took the plunge flashing this pre-alpha BIOS, and I'm seeing weird things happen with it.

In the v020 my drives used to be available right away in the OS, but now they mount while my desktop is loading?!

Nothing else has changed in my workstation setup except the BIOS so has to be related to it.

    Anyone else experiencing anything similar?

    like new bios.
I disable CMS and enable fast boot - now Windows started for couple of seconds.

something changed in distribution of pci-e resources, now my GPU's:
    Slot 1 - Titan GTX (pcie 16x 2.0)
    Slot 2 - disable
    Slot 3 - Titan GTX (pcie 16x 3.0)
    Slot 4 - disable
    Slot 5 - Titan GTX (pcie 8x 3.0)
    Slot 6 - disable
    Slot 7 - Titan GTX (pcie 8x 3.0)

    before:
    Slot 1 - Titan GTX (pcie 16x 2.0)
    Slot 2 - disable
    Slot 3 - Titan GTX (pcie 8x 3.0)
    Slot 4 - disable
    Slot 5 - Titan GTX (pcie 8x 3.0)
    Slot 6 - disable
    Slot 7 - Titan GTX (pcie 16x 3.0)

    I don't know what a difference.

If you can still get into the BIOS try disabling a few of the onboard devices starting with the bluetooth and e-sata ports and SAS boot rom (if you're not using it).

This board has always had problems in allocating resources when numerous slots are populated and it seems that address space that would otherwise have been available to components has been exploited elsewhere in this BIOS.

Also, for the 0.09 it would be very useful to label the info graphics at the top of the main screen.

The memory and PCIe slots should be designated numbers as they are on the motherboard,
so no one has to guess whether they need to read left to right or right to left (not all cultures read left to right).

How it is possible? Where the turbo mode settings in bios?

Before this bios ,my XEON E5-2687W worked with all cores to 3,4Ghz (turbo mode enabled by 255 setting and peformance value in energy menu).Inside new bios there isn't this value to set and Hyper Threading doesn't work.
Now,with this bios my cpus don't work in HT enabled and my xeons work always a 3,1Ghz on all  16cores (8+8 and no HT).
At the end,i'm returned to bios 020 and my xeons now work with 32threads and 3,4Ghz on all cores.
But can you set Hyper Threading on enabled with new bios and can you see your cpus on 32 threads?

Findings in comparison to the v20 bios

    Bios highly unstable,
SAS RAID disappears and has to be recreated 1 out of 2 times whenever you make any adjustment in the bios,
Cant reboot, only cold boots seem to work,
GEN 3 equalizations report in bios that they are in place, but utilities report mixed results,
Bios, on exit, sometimes reverts to default settings.
Bios loses boot drive on occasion.

    Re: EVGA SR-X - BIOS 0.08 Released 2013/11/17 22:45:54 (permalink)
hmm.  Well all of us seem to be experiencing the soft reboot bug, I'm ok most of the time but when I do need to hard reset or power down the LED code displayed is always 63, haven't looked up what it relates to yet.  I don't use the SAS controller but don't doubt the issues reported.  It seems that most of these problems relate to a shortage or PCIe resources for those of us with a high number of slots in use.

My issues only really began since I installed a pair of V2 E5-2697s (12 cores).  These replaced two 8 core chips.  Slots are populated as follows

Slot 1 - Auzentech Home Theatre HD soundcard
Slot 2 - Matrox Mojito Video editing card
    Slot 2 - GTX Titan
Slot 4 - Empty (disabled via DIP switch).
    Slot 5 - GTX Titan
Slot 6 - Empty (disabled via DIP switch).
    Slot 7 - GTX Titan.

In order to boot into windows consistently with the above setup I have to disable e-sata, the second NIC, the 1394 net adapter, the onboard sound chip and every usb 3.0 port except the one of the front headers.

I can leave the SAS orom, bluetooth and all remaining USB 2.0 ports and headers enabled.

However, with the older CPUs I could also leave all the USB 3.0 ports and headers, second NIC and 1394 enabled and only the e-sata and onboard sound needed disabling.

As stated earlier one of the options I found made a big difference before was to manually set the slots under IOU2 (in the IOH/Bifurcation menu) to 8x/8x instead of x16.  This was recommended for those using both slots one and two in the board (which I am).  But everything is now detected automatically.  Could we re-instate the manual override?

Also, the CPU smartfan setting only seems to work for CPU fan 0, CPU fan 1 runs at 100% the entire time unless I manually set it to a lower voltage.

EDIT - @NEMESIS2011, I've also noticed that there is no Turboboost option in the BIOS and that turboboost isn't functioning. According to spec, my CPUs are supposed to have a maximum frequency of 3.5ghz with the multiplier(s) operating between x12 and x35 according to the number cores in use but at the moment their highest speed is 2.7ghz regardless of core activity and the multipliers are only switching between x12 (min) and x27 (max).  I didn't notice if the same thing was happening with my old processors and this new BIOS before uninstalling them but I assume it was.

Hyperthreading however, is still working for me and I am seeing all 48 threads.

Jacob, team? When you have a moment!

    Jacob and support

the two largest anomilous issues are -->

    1. Reboots, resets, restarts fail on bios .08

    2. SAS Raid gets blown away whenever you access the board bios in bios .08, 20, and 19

obviously the SAS Raid is my largest concern, after accessing the bios, all discs in SAS raid become "Non-Menber"

I was using a raid card, but I can't use it and have 4 titans on the motherboard

    Re: EVGA SR-X - BIOS 0.08 Released 2013/12/02 11:04:36 (permalink)
Problem with the latest BIOS update:
    1. BIOS switch set to 1st position.
    2. Updated to latest BIOS. Unable to boot into Windows 8.
    3. System hangs (no posting, just black screen all the way) after displaying post code bA. Can't get into BIOS mode.

    Remedy(futile):
    4. Booting into Windows 8 with BIOS switch on 2nd position (no BIOS update here, of course).
    5. Set BIOS switch to 1st position and,
        a. Tried rolling back to previous BIOS version, but still get post code bA and system hangs.
        b. Tried reseting the BIOS (pressing the red button next to power switch), but still get post code bA and system hangs.
        c. Got rid of all PCI-E cards except one VGA card and reboot; displaying post code bA and system hangs.
        d. Just keeping keyboard/mouse/display connectors, got rid of all other peripherals... and reboot; post code bA + hangs.

Question #1: What seems to be the problem? More importantly how do I fix the BIOS (switch set to 1st position)?
Question #2: There is no information on Post Code bA on the Internet nor the users manual. What is it?

If no remedy is available to the problem, can I get a new BIOS chip from EVGA directly? My local distributer does not carry this motherboard (SR-X).

    From SuperMicro Forum : "Answer
If it stops at BA, it's memory initialization failure.
Generally, it's caused by bad signal integrity. Considering it was working, please confirm you made any changes (replacing CPU or memory, or moving the server).
Try to reinstall the DIMMs and check if the CPU socket has bent pin. "

Though mcluster had already mentioned the most essential issues, here are my impressions from that BIOS update.

    Positive:
    • The system boots with dual Ivy Bridge Xeon E5-2687Wv2 and 128 GB (8×16 GB Kingston KVR18R13D4/16).
    • All 16 cores and Hyper Threading are enabled.
    • PCI-E GEN3 reliably works for my GTX680 (×16) and LSI 9271-8i (×8) without any workarounds.
     Negative:
    • It is absolutely annoying that the Intel Turbo Boost® Technology is permanently disabled.
This definitely was not intended by Intel when they designed the 2687Wv2 as a workstation processor.
    • The current voltage is only shown for the first CPU and its RAM, but not for the second CPU and its RAM.
    • Intel I/O Acceleration Technology was disabled by default, though it works perfectly well.
     Annotation:
When changing to Ivy Bridge v2 processors, it is essential to repeat flashing with BIOS select switch in each of the three positions. Otherwise there will be no working backup with a v2 if a future flash might fail.

@allegrino: You boot with the BIOS select switch in a working position and move the switch to a different position when the system is up and running. Executing Windows_Update.bat will then flash the selected entry.

    1× LSI SAS 9271-8iCC CacheVault + 8× Vertex4 512 (2TB RAID10)

I can confirm similar results, no turbo boost is frustrating, but I am happy to have each SAS port working as 4 additional SATA ports again.

    Hi uhans_ua.
