I'm actually satisfied with the response from EVGA on our concerns about the design of the heat sink, but the one area that they haven't specifically addressed is why is the smaller heat pipe not sealed? If it's because the heat sink is designed to be used with other video card designs, I'd be fine with them admitting that; just don't leave us to assume that this is a defect.

It is sealed.

The unsealed dummy third pipe was just an internet storm.

The guy that posted those pictures ended up swapping his EVGAs for 2x MSI. He's still having problems. Possibly mobo related.

Re: EVGA GTX 970 ACX 2.0 quality concerns 2014/10/02 08:05:09 (permalink)
Well I got mine last night and slapped it in.  It's the 970 ASC SC model.  Out-of-the-box, it's whisper quiet even under load.  I had to check if the fans were spinning.  No coil whine either.  But me being a tweaker that I am have EVGA Precision X and I reused my profile from my 670.  Ouch is it loud, maybe 2.5x times louder and it's not even at 60% - hate to hear what 100% fan speed is like.  My case might actually lift off:-)

Alphacool has the GTX 760 reference water block that fits this model so I've ordered one - it's coming from Germany so it's a nutcracker in shipping and time.

www. alphacool. com/ product_info.php/ info/ p1274_Alphacool-NexXxoS-NVXP-Nvidia-GTX760-and-GTX970---polished---Copper.html

Of course, you'll need to format that URL since the forums don't accept the real one.  Just get rid of the spaces:-)

So, with the fan profile, temps reach 64C max in a room that is 79F.  Side is off so the air flow sucks.  Just FYI.  Not bad considering and once I get that water block on it, I won't see 60C ever again.

Another coil whine free card delivered! Good to hear!
I'm grabbing mine today, it's currently "out for delivery" :)

Ok, I received my card during lunch and took the time to install it.  Booted the PC and the card is pretty quiet.  Really pleased about it.  I installed the latest .16 drivers and Precision X and i've set the fan profile to Quiet mode.  I'll manually modifiy the fan curve a bit just so when the card hit the high 60s it'll spin a bit more.

I've run Unigine once and the card hit 70 degrees.  Not so bad and I couldn't hear the fan.  In fact it's quieter than my Gigabyte HD 7950 Windforce 3.  Really pleased about that!

But I have serious coil whine (I won't be a prick about it) while running Unigine benchmark but hardly perceptible during games (only launched Diablo 3 for 5 minutes).  Newegg.ca says that my purchase is not eligible for refund and I don't want to replace it with the same model.  I think i'm gonna Step-Up this puppy to the FTW or 980...ill have to decide.

Time to queue I guess!

Yeah same here but the 970 FTW use the real ACX 2.0 cooler so thats that and I guess the 980 ACX 2.0 will do to?!?
But if the reference 980 was available i'd jump on it eyes shut!

Ok, ran Uniengine (Heaven 4.0) and the score is lower than expected.  I opened a saved file I did 4/2013 against my ASUS 670 and got 879 with Min/Max FPS of (18.2/77.8).  With this new 970 ASC2 SSC, the score was 930 with 20.2/62.9.  I used defaults both times.  I would have figured the 970 would have destroyed the 670 but it didn't.  In fact, the Max FPS was 22% lower than the 670.  Any ideas?  I fired up GW2 last night and didn't notice much of a bump either but didn't think much of it at the time.

Make sure you remove your previous drivers, very throughly.

And on that note, I went ahead and ordered the ASUS STRIX DCUII today and will be shipping back the SC ACX 2.

I'm very (and sadly) disappointed in my first experience with EVGA after hearing excellent story after story. I hope they find it within themselves to work through these issues and do right by the customers who have chosen to remain with their products.

Initial product quality and the poor manner in which issues have been addressed by the company thus far.

What is wrong with your 970, coil whine?  If so, they can help you with that. And I actually think eVGA has handled the complaints well. If you really are dissatisfied with your product, they will help you. If you truly want the other heat sink on the FTW model, they will allow you to upgrade.  They are also now offering free back plates as well.  What did they do that makes you say they addressed the issues poorly?

Not to sound entitled, but too little too late.

If choose to spend $400 on a product, I expect the initial quality and support to be nearly flawless...particularly from a company that's well established.

I will ask for a RMA...the whine is pretty bad on mine unfortunately.  But can I be garanteed to get a coil whine free card with RMA?

I seriously doubt they can guaranteed a coil-whine-free unit by any standard unless they hand-test each card they send back. It's such an obscure issue during production that many companies don't discover it until it's too late to limit customer impact.

Retroactively however, component quality and and proper design goes a long way.

You spent $400 on a 970? Someone ripped you off big time. You said that they handled the situation poorly, what exactly did they do to make you say that?

You can see under my avatar that I live in Texas which is in the USA where a SC ACX2 costs $350.  I paid less than you (no sales tax) for a FTW edition. What country do you live in where they cost $370?

And again I will ask, what did eVGA do that makes you say they handled the situation poorly?

The SSC ACX 2.0 is listed at 369.99 just about everywhere. Happily however, I was able to purchase the ASUS STRIX for $329.99 without taxes.

And, for the third time, the situation was handled poorly from the moment the product was designed; hence why no site with a respectable reputation is remotely recommending any 970 EVGA variants besides possibly the FTW edition.

Ok, found the culprit when I ran 3dmark vantage - all my fps scores were capped at 60.  When you install the drivers, make sure to change vsync to application settings in the global tab.  Once I did that, I hit 40K in 3dmv and 1375 in Heaven 4 with min/max at 25.9/114.6.  Much better scores.

Edit:  The settings are under NVidia control panel - 3d settings.  There's 2 tabs, one for global and the other app-specific.  Go into the global tab and change vsync from on to application-controlled.

You said the poor manner in which the issues have been addresses by eVGA so far. I'm wanting to know how they addressed the issues poorly in your mind. I've seen them have upgrade programs for people that want the ACX2, and upgrade program for the FTW edition if you want, and they will RMA cards with coil whine.  Not to mention now are offering free back plates. I've seen them do nothing but trying to help people that are dissatisfied. Much more than I've seen other companies do.

If it's any correlation, I paid just over $400 for my 970 FTW off EVGA's website. Got charged sales tax, plus $10 for shipping + signature. But this is the top of the line 970.

Whilst you might enjoy your undying loyalty to a brand, I find it more beneficial to myself to purchase the products that offer a superior value.

If I wanted to "pay up", I mean, uh "step up" to a "better" product, I could do so far more easily by simply returning this card.

Which, I did. Except, I'm paying less. And, the product which I have now purchased is far more favorably reviewed. Backplate included.

What I'm trying to understand at this point is simply why you won't accept my point of view.

I understand that you might be disappointed with their quality. But you still haven't said why you think they have handled the situation poorly.  All you've said is they handled poorly without actually saying how when I've shown how they have handled it very well. More than I can say for other companies I've purchased from before.

I'm not entirely knowledgeable on your standards, but asking customers to upgrade to more expensive offerings or to RMA a week old product or to wait multiple weeks for an item that was supposed to be included in the original offering isn't an acceptable response to launching a poor quality product.

With that being said, I'm done taking a part of this discussion. I wish everyone who decided to stick with EVGAs offerings the best of luck. I hope we all enjoy the products we've paid for, that's what matters in the end.

They aren't asking everyone to upgrade to the FTW. There are plenty of people enjoying their 970 cards. They simply have that option if you truly want to have it instead.  And if you get coil whine from other companies (which you can) you would have to RMA with them as well. And since when was the back plate supposed to ship with the 970s? I myself can't wait for my eVGA FTW to come in next week.

Re: EVGA GTX 970 ACX 2.0 quality concerns 2014/10/07 18:57:55 (permalink)
I just arrived home to my ASUS STRIX GTX 970 and I can say without a doubt that this card makes the EVGA ACX 2.0 look like a third rate product.

I wish everyone keeping their EVGA cards their best of luck, but I can confidently say I have no further interested in keeping a jet-engined rattling snake inside my case for the next two years.

I really hoped for much better from EVGA, but there will always be a second time. EVGA has made some great products, and I know they will do right in the future.

Goodbye for now.

Yes the Strix is the best card on the market deltahawk5 so enjoy. Until the ACX 2.0 is improved EVGA will be stuck in the low middle tier of cards.
