Awesome, I would love to step-up my SSC to the FTW.

Regarding the recent GTX 970 feedback, we would like to provide the following statements and actions to address it:

1. We understand that some users were expecting the ACX 2.0 fan version to be available on the launch day, but unfortunately the ACX 2.0 development schedule did not allow us to have ACX 2.0 product available at launch. We plan to offer an ACX 2.0 fan upgrade program, stay tuned for news on this.

2. For EVGA GTX 970 ACX cards we have two different fansink designs, FTW ACX 2.0, and SSC and below. For those users who have SSC and below, and are not pleased with the cooling performance, we are adding the GTX 970 FTW to the stepup program as an option.

3. We are going to release a new BIOS upgrade to all 970 ACX owners that will fine tune the fan performance and provide better acoustics. Stay tuned.

4. Some EVGA users have reported inductor noise on their GTX 970, if you think you have this type of concern then please contact our support.

Sorry for the inconvenience, EVGA's top priority is customer satisfaction.

Thanks,
Joe

Unfortunately, this is long overdue.  Lost many customers, including myself.  Hopefully this is a lesson learned for EVGA - if you weren't ready for production, you should have made customers aware of these details before release.  I, for one, already purchased a different card.  May have done otherwise if I had known these remedial actions were coming down the pipeline.

EVGA GTX 970 = mediocre product (coil whine, not all cooling pipes touching the GPU) + bad marketing (first free backplate, after I order 2 the backplate offer disappears)

Still waiting the news around the backplate, currently still sealed. If I don't hear anything on Friday, back they go....
...and if I do get the backplates (as advertised on EVGA's websites), then I still have my concerns about the coil whine I read every where / or on several forums....

Oh well... We will see, or we will not see.... MSI already banging loudly on the door now...

Some lessons learned here EVGA, you need to be in front of the game when it comes to handling a product release. This means addressing these points (incl. backplate) to reviewers before the product releases to quell any concerns. While EVGA will do just fine, you undoubtedly lost some customers who purchased other cards due to the uncertainty of the EVGA design/quality at release.

Am I correct to assume there will be a cost involved when using the step-up program in this specific scenario? If that being case, I think I rather continue to keep an eye out for the stock of other manufacturers.

Looking at the board designs and their overall quality, I'm really starting to think EVGA went for the broadest profit margins possible. Everything about this card and customer service responses is starting to scream poor QA and rushed product development.

My 970 SC ACX2.0 will not arrive until Thursday and I'm already having serious doubt about even opening the box. I rather spend another week without a GTX 970 than having to deal with headaches in the future.

Disappointing, seeing that I came to EVGA by the reputation of quality that followed them.

Hi all! New here!
I just read the entire thread and something makes me nervous.

The EVGA guy said that only the FTW version of the 970 will have the ACX 2.0 cooler on it...but I just ordered the SSC version off Newegg Canada and it clearly stated that it came with the ACX 2.0 cooler (that why I waited for this card to come back in stock and didn't ordered the other EVGA models).

Here's the model I ordered: EVGA 04G-2975-KR GeForce GTX 970 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 G-SYNC Support SSC ACX 2.0 Video Card

Just want to be sure that I won't get an ACX 1.0 model!??!?
It may sound like a horrible question but I was cheated in the past with things like that (my current HD 7950...)

The FTW version has a unique version of the ACX 2.0 which is different from ACX 1.0 and ACX 2.0 SC and SSC.

In other words, you'll be getting the cooling setup everyone has been dredging about.

So we're to consider the opinion of somebody who doesn't even have their card yet?  Seriously?  Also, you may want to check your facts. ACX  ver 1.0 vs ver 2.0 pertains to the fan assembly only. Your credibility is lacking.

GomJabbar9 - I would suggest that you install your card and ring it out. Chances are that you will be good. EVGA support has a number of options available in the event that you want assistance. Cheers!

Yeah that is what i'll do.  It's my first Nvidia card in a long time and my first ever EVGA card.  I've heard lots of good stuff about EVGA and always wanted to try their product.  Plus their Steu-Up program is a cool idea.

I'm very tolerent when it come to sound and noise.  My current Gigabyte HD 7950 WF3 had some coil whine at really high FPS.  Very noticeable stuff but nothing to cry out on the forums.  I kept the card and it's still a beast now at 1080p.  I also know that coil whine is not a defect but rather a "behavior" of some parts when they're pushed.

I really can't wait to plug this baby in and try it on some demanding stuff, but at 1080p i'm not sure i'll see the difference.  Next buy is a 1440p monitor.

Have you read the AnAndtech and bit-tech reviews for the SSC and FTW? Entirely different heatsink construction. I don't need to open up a box to know what multiple reliable sources have already made public information, and EVGA themselves have admitted.

Maybe you should start to question your own credibility.

Been using the exact same card, the 970 SSC ACX 2.0 for a week now. It's quiet, cool, and runs great. 0 complaints.

You call yourself an informed customer? Then you should already know that many people are also complaining about coil whine and even dead fans (as well as several other issues) on the MSI, Gigabyte and Asus models of the gtx 970. And there are also a lot of people that have the EVGA gtx 970s with little to no coil whine (a small amount is perfectly normal and won't affect the lifespan of your card; not noticeable), perfectly functional and relatively quiet fans (good temperatures), and good overclocking capability.

Every manufacturer is bound to have faulty units. Not every manufacturer is bound to make poor design choices, which is the obvious occurrence with EVGA this time around.

You say poor design choices, yet many owners (including me) report good temperatures with relatively quiet fans. Could the temperatures and fans be better? Yeah, always. Make the card twice as large with gigantic heat sinks/pipes and 4 huge fans, and there you have it. But that doesn't mean the current temperatures and noise are too high, or will decrease the performance of the card.

You're judging a product by its own merits, in a free market.

Where EVGA does well, other manufacturers do better for an equal or lower cost. You're more than welcome to reference major review sites.

EVGA,

You ship out a product knowing fully that the 970 cooler did not fit, and the card makes a loud noise underload!  And then you put out a statement saying:  You Meant to Do That.  You meant to have only two heat pipes touching the GPU; you meant for the card to only have 4/2 PP, when the truth is obiviously simple:  corner cutting.  Now, the practice of trying to cut down on cost wasn't meant to help out your customers; no, I highly doubt that.  instead, I think it was only to pad your bottom line.  In keeping with your Official Statement regarding the 970, if you meant to make your cooler's design like the 1.0, then why would you put out a 2.0?  Because you knew it really didn't fit and that you didn't want to take a loss on the 1.0s that you probably had in abundance....

EVGA, I have been buying your products since '04.  Since then, this is the first time I've owned another manufacture's motherboard and graphics card.  why?  Well, it started with your X79 disaster.  The x79 Classified was a wreck; your 770 GTX ACX cooler made the same noise as do your 970s; and the fan on the 770 would start to chop into the plastic shroud, which would result in its total failure.

EVGA, don't you guys see?  Your heading in a direction that makes your loyal base really upset!  Why has this been your standard operating procedure?  when did it start?  You then try to cover your bad choices with great customer service.  In my field, that's called:  SPIN.  It's like someone saying:  EVGA's products are shoddy; but boy, do they have some great custom service!

HONESTLY, we loyal customers would like to NEVER have to experience your great customer service in the first place!  We would rather have your customer service be a mystery.  A mystery because your products are 99% solid!  But, that's not the case.  I was looking to come back to buying your products.  I have yet to upgrade from x79; this is not helping me, and many others, to choose EVGA.  There are problems everywhere we turn; it's how we respond to them that makes us great...or not.

Casuist
outlabin
my saga so far

Bought Six Evga 970 cards for clients system builds 2 cards are fine the other four had coil whine 1 bad 3 not so bad but still not acceptable returned all 4 them and went for 3 MSI and 1 gigabyte due to what they had in stock at the time... and glad to report no coil noise on any ....This is very poor from EVGA i think they have dropped the ball on this one .....so far its cost me Time and money sorting there faults out.

As for people stating that running in vsync ect helps reduce or removes the noise is still unacceptable yes you are going to have some form of noise but this should not be a resonant frequency that we humans should be hearing.

I can not be expected to give clients there new built pc's and tell them you get a free dog whistle included

Shame on you EVGA and yes i have been very loyal with evga for many years but this is unacceptable me personally my next cards for system builds & for my own system will not be a EVGA..this is why i am not loyal to one company.

Aye, it seems the 970 SC and 970 SSC versions are rubbish, but the 970 FTW and all 980s are substantially better. Definitely the 980s are getting great reviews, but honestly I've heard next to nothing on the 970 FTW so that's an educated assumption on my part. I sure hope I'm right though because that's what I'll be getting if it ever becomes freaking available again. >.<

Well, as far as i know, the only thing changed on the FTW edition will be the cooler...
Take that for what it's worth...

Interesting. I am currently running a X79 Classified B-Stock with no issues, as well as a 770GTX SC with no issues.
Conclusion: It is not the product but the user making the issues.

Except that the user is not responsible for designing and building the actual product.

B-stock means that the original owner must have returned it due to issues. BTW the X79 Classified had bios issues which may have been resolved on your B stock purchase.  I never owned an ACX model cooler since I refused shipment on my 970 SSC and bought a Gigabyte 980.

I'm actually satisfied with the response from EVGA on our concerns about the design of the heat sink, but the one area that they haven't specifically addressed is why is the smaller heat pipe not sealed? If it's because the heat sink is designed to be used with other video card designs, I'd be fine with them admitting that; just don't leave us to assume that this is a defect.

B-stock doesn't necessarily mean it was sent in as a return or RMA. A lot of the B-stock is from step-ups.
