Is anyone else seeing this string on their GTX 1080 FE from EVGA? This string follows the card in three different computers I've tried it in. It occurs in the pre-boot phase of the system startup. Any ideas on this would be great! I'm genuinely curious if anyone else is seeing this. Thanks.

PS: The card works fine otherwise, this message is really bugging me though. (I don't feel like a $700 card should have a message like this during boot.)

What are your system specs?   Motherboard, BIOS version, operating system, etc?

You may just need to clear your CMOS and let the system search at boot up.

Did you buy it second hand? If someone flashed a different VBIOS to it, that could be the cause.

ASUS Crosshair V Formula with BIOS 1703, AMD FX 8350, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. This error string happens before the OS loads though. It occurs when the video initializes and the error follows the card between three different computers I've tried it in. It's like the BIOS of the card displays it, not the motherboard of the PC.

Clear your CMOS by powering down and pulling the battery for about 10 seconds.

Already tried that, twice. At that point I took it to a friends house and installed it in his gaming PC and received the same message. (Completely different motherboard, Intel-based.)

Here's a screenshot of the card's info via GPU-Z.

I noticed it says "Undefined" for Subvendor, could that be causing this?

That's what I thought as well. I've been talking with them via support tickets and they said this:

Hello,

There are not firmware updates for the GTX 1080. The PXE error has to do with booting from a LAN. Are you using a network to host your Windows copy? Since you are able to load Windows with the old graphics card installed then you should reflash the BIOS and apply any updates there are for Windows.

If that does not help then perform a CMOS reset. Power down the computer and remove the electrical plug from the outlet. Look for the round silver battery on the motherboard that reads CR2032 and remove the battery for 10 minutes. Replace the battery and boot back up with the 1080 installed.

If all else fails you will need to reinstall Windows altogether. Are you running Windows 10? Please let us know if you are not able to get the issue resolved.

Regards,
EVGA

The fact that the error follows the card in three different systems tells me it's not my motherboard or BIOS, OS, drivers, etc... Everybody always hears PXE and they automatically think "LAN-based PXE booting" but PXE just means Preboot Execution Environment, which is when and where the video card initializes itself. I believe the BIOS on the card needs flashed as well.

Agreed.  There is something missing or corrupted in the BIOS which came on your card.  Subvender says 0000 as you noted.

Tell them that you don't need an update.  Tell them that you just need the original BIOS again since yours is corrupted from the factory.  If they don't want to give it to you, tell them you want to RMA it for a new replacement.  That should get them going.

You've got a problem with how the GPU is reporting itself to the system. As Sajin pointed out, reflashing the BIOS should fix it.  Under vendor, it should say: EVGA (3842) Lastly, unless you're booting from a lan you don't need PXE enabled at all.

Thank you so much, I was curious what it should actually say right there. PXE-boot isn't enabled. In fact the onboard LAN is disabled entirely on this PC as I unfortunately have to use a WIFI dongle to get internet right now.

Lovely, they want me to send the card back to them via RMA because they say there is no BIOS available to flash the card with.

Hello,

If you feel that the BIOS on the card has been improperly flashed and would like to RMA the card we can have that done for you since the 1080 is a new GPU chip from Nvidia there are no current BIOS updates or a stock BIOS available and an RMA would be the only option. I can provide you with a pre-paid shipping label to send back the card as well.

Let us know what you would like to do.

If the problem followed multiple PCs as you said, its clearly something wrong with the card.  Even if you could re-flash the BIOS I wouldn't do it.  A brand new card should work. Who knows what else could be the underlying cause.  I hope EVGA sends you a new one right away.

It wouldn't be such a problem if the availability weren't so tough.  Then you could have contacted Newegg and said "it's broke, replace it."

So I downloaded the new EVGA Precision designed for the GTX 1080 and when I loaded it up I was met with this:

Apparently even EVGA's own software doesn't recognize the card. (I also received a STOCK vbios the other day from EVGA and flashed the card. Didn't help.) It's looking like an RMA for sure at this point.

No if the card is running Gen 2 x16 maybe Yes if running Gen 2 x8 would be a problem.

Could my older PCI-E 2.0 interface bus cause this issue? (I get good benchmarks even on my older motherboard and CPU so far.)

No if the card is running Gen 2 x16 maybe Yes if running Gen 2 x8 would be a problem.

The slot is x16.

Does the Bios show it running x16?
