    My SR2 is working perfectly.
I think I will wait this one out.
The uncore "fix" may tap some extra reduced latency but then the trials and tribulations of endless nights of running LinX begins.

    Maybe...

Can anyone report if the save profile is fixed? Or the random CMOS Checksum Bad error is fixed or was it just my board I had that issue?

I update my bios to A58.
run all my settings and save to nr1
A Quick Reset bios and the save file was still there.
    it works for me.

    Re:EVGA Classified SR-2 - BIOS A58 Released 2013/04/26 16:07:47 (permalink)
I'm looking forward to trying this out, and finding whether any of the following major bugs been fixed:

    1) The amount of RAM detected at boot up (soft reboot or cold boot) randomly changes between 40GB and 48GB (I have 6x8GB of ECC Registered).
(Edit: Nope, just tested, that still happens seemingly randomly.)
(Edit: I finally nailed this down. It looks like it is purely related to RAM speed. It also may be dependent on the specific CPU used. Xeon X5650's MCH is only rated to 1333MHz RAM. When I have the RAM running at > 1333MHz with 3 DIMMs (all 3 channels used) it is still stable, but sometimes one of the modules doesn't get detected (no other setting, voltage tweaks, QPI speeds, Uncore, etc. makes any difference). So if you have an issue with some of the RAM not getting detected, drop the RAM multiplier until it's running at <= 1333MHz and the problem should go away (at least it did for me). Note that this appears to be a MCH issue, not a RAM issue - the RAM I use is rated at 1600MHz (8GB ECC RDIMMs), and it's Crucial RAM, not a questionable brand marketing heavily pre-OC-ed RAM (not naming any names). So if you are having a similar intermittent missing RAM problem, you may want to try dialing down the RAM multiplier and see if that cures it.

    2) The Xeons the SR2 is supposed to run with support up to 288GB of RAM - each. Why is the BIOS incapable of initializing this properly? Why does the machine fail to boot at all when more than 48GB of RAM are fitted?
(Edit: Nope, fitting a single CPU and 6x8GB into it's RAM slots doesn't finish posting (b8, b9, then reset, repeatedly))

    3) With every Linux kernel that has PCIE hotplug support built in, on a cold boot, the ICH10 keeps flapping when the hotplug driver tries to connect to it. This floods the console and renders the machine completely unusable. Reboot into BIOS, change the clock speed significantly (e.g. from 133 to 180), save and exit, the machine will power off and restart itself. Go back into the BIOS, set the FSB back to what it was, save and exit, the machine won't power off this time, it will continue to boot and the PCIE hotplug flood won't happen. This implies there is something badly flawed with the BIOS initialization of hardware, particularly ICH10.
(Edit: Nope, just tested this as well - still breaks on a cold-boot and fixes itself as described.)

    4) When the controller running the IDE port on the motherboard is enabled, NIC BIOS never loads, and it thus becomes impossible to network boot the machine when the IDE port is enabled. This makes it impossible to have an IDE DVD DRIVE while PXE booting the machine off a NAS (NFS) or SAN (iSCSI). This is an extremely inconvenient bug/limitation.
(Edit: Hurrah! At least this bug has been fixed. This is very welcome. I can now use my old IDE DVD drive and still network boot the machine.)

There are probably more that I'm forgetting about at the moment, but the above 4 are major issues that happen to be messing up my specific intended usage of the machine.

Oh, and updating the BIOS from A56 to A58 clears all the saved profiles - extremely inconvenient.

Edit: So, 1 out of (4) 3 major bugs fixed. Less than I'd hoped for, but more than I expected.

Is the issue of 96Gb of memory support solved by this BIOS? It's really pity an unexpected BIOS update comes and the most burning issue of this board stays unresolved!

I have worked around the missing ram issue by tightening or loosening the screws around CPU0 and 1 and loosened the heatsinks

Profiles saved from previous BIOS should never be used!  That is why they are deleted/removed on flashing.  In the past flashing did not delete them and if you did use them,  it usually resulted in FF on next post!

I successfully flashed using all my prior settings.  The phone camera comes in handy to note all your settings.  At the very least WRITE THEM DOWN!

Never had disappearing memory problem but it can be caused by an overtightened heat sink/block.  That I have seen on X58 boards in the past.

    Now on to uncore overclocking...

That's just poor quality in BIOS writing. My Asus motherboards don't seem to lose saved presets across BIOS updates. It isn't difficult to ensure that the format of the saved settings is both forward (previously unavailable settings get set to defaults) and backward (settings not understood by the earlier BIOS get ignored) compatible.  Of course "not difficult" is a function of the quality of the developers writing your BIOSes. Considering that the SR-2 is supposed to be a flagship product of highest quality, the quality of the BIOS is bordering on embarrassing just from the bugs I mentioned above.

My DFI boards of yesterday would do the same thing so I don't think it's a matter of poor BIOS writing.
Asus is using Phoenix and DFI (now defunct) and EVGA use Award so that may be it, not sure.  Perhaps someone else can chime in that knows.

So far, so good!  Uncore at 3600, no issues to report.

DFI boards were the most awful pile of steaming manure ever seen. They had a ridiculously high failure rate because they didn't even bother to put heatsinks on components that were clearly running hot enough to require them. I only ever bought one (790FX-M2R, as high end as they made at the time for the AMD CPUs), and the only reason it is still alive is because I thermal epoxied a heatsink to the voltage regulators. The quality of the BIOS on them was well and truly appalling, down to spelling errors in menus. They did the world a huge favour when they withdrew from the motherboard business.

What base BIOS you use has nothing to do with how you save your setting profiles. It's all just software, same as any other; it can be written well and be feature rich and forward and backward compatible, or it can be written poorly and only have a sledgehammer approach of resetting everything on update. When spending £400 on a motherboard, I (obviously erroneously) expected it to be the former.

Ok tested with new bios and it seems to be more stable than a56 and requires bit less voltages .
Now I can save my oc settings to profiles and load it after a clear cmos if it didnt boot .
started to love my sr2 again .

Yes I have 2x x5650's but only using one because I don't have another heatsink ,
I can get up to 4.6ghz with full bios mod . 200bclk 23 multi but temps are little high because I'm using a cooler master n520 , doesn't need much volts to get me there . Due to little high temps I'm running this at 3.8ghz

The BIOS profile bug is an AMI BIOS bug, we are tried to track that one down but its a bit challenging to find the root cause, will keep trying though.

    Yes just one though!
That bug has never been addressed and probably never will.

To see it in action, change something in your BIOS, then save to profile slot number two.  Restore profile 1 you previously had.  See what's not there?  Yep, saving the new setting to slot 2 just put the same settings in slot one.  Don't forget to switch that setting you changed back, then save again! ;)
