Re:EVGA Classified SR-2 - BIOS A58 Released 2013/05/01 18:21:29 (permalink)
Can anyone report if the save profile is fixed? Or the random CMOS Checksum Bad error is fixed or was it just my board I had that issue?

Hi everyone
That is the first time I find myself in this situation and really, there's nothing to do on this motherboard EVGA SR2.

CMOS CHECKSUM BAD OR SPACE enought  PCI DEVICE.

Frankly I'm a N00B silk and I did not understand a computer or the hardware for 15 years now on the evga or manufacturing defects on their motherboard.

I buy a evga sr2 in 2012 which fail after one year of operation I had no worries bios boot etc with the same material used today, but the dfference is that this new motherboard all his present problems.

Here is my equipment:

* 2 GHZ x5672@3.2

32 GB GSKILL

2 * 6970

Revodrive 3 120 GB

Asus Xonar D2X

RAID 0 F120 Crosair

Personally bios A56 or A58 current new bios does not solve the problem of boot.

the only difference between the A58 and A56 I have less error boot ca can hold a day with two stop and restart the PC without worries.

For example in the morning I turn on the PC and the new hop'' error message.

Me in my case I save my oc profile in slot # 2.

The CMOS checksum bad my dates occur and the correct loading profiles No. 2 is charging.

Lol frankly do, I've never had this problem is with other brand mobo has more cheaper.

you will need to flash your bios with modded A50 bios .
Then do the jumper switch and set the volts .

Hi,

Thank you for the info the bios modded is that what link?

Besides adding uncore Allows adjustability Below 20X multiply what is changing relative to the A58.

Personally I try different setting oc.

The cmos checksum bad just on a 4.1 ghz settings

24 * 171 cpu clock
DDR3 at 1700 MHz No. HT and Turbo.

Oc is steady idle temperature 25 °.

After two or three ignitions I silk or CMOS checksum bad enought space to pci device.

What jumper you switch to flash and pass the voltages.

I see not what you want to disable jumper for the flash from the pcix or some cpu as xcool.
Thank you for your help.

New BIOS release and 96GB of memory? 2013/05/02 16:58:39 (permalink)
Hi EVGA_JacobF,

I'm desperately trying to draw your attention to the problem of booting with 96GB (12x8GB) of memory. I have opened a thread on this subject (and found another one from a couple of years ago) which doesn't seem to help drawing attention from any of EVGA personnel.

I'm very pleased with the fact EVGA is releasing new versions of SR-2 BIOS this late in the product lifecycle. I must admit this is a very unusual (yet much welcome!) practice amongst motherboard manufacturers.

Let me try to explain why this is such an important issue: I realise SR motherboards have been designed with enthusiast users in mind. However, they're about the only consumer grade platform suitable to serve as virtualisation server and/or scientific calculation platform. With SR-2, I was able to build a dual Westmere 3.6GHz (and climbing!) virtualisation server for mere 2.7K: 2 x used X5650 ES off eBay for $560 (together), a new SR-2 off eBay for $450 (including shipping to Australia), ~$700 for the case and 2 x CPU Corsair closed loop watercooling systems (H80i) and less than $1000 for 12x8GB memory sticks (assuming they're working) and a platinum PSU. A comparable "proper" server would cost well above 5K mark (CPUs alone would amount for >3K) and wouldn't allow for any overclocking, not to mention differences in aesthetics and noise. However, for this machine to truly serve its purpose, it's adamant it's able to use more than 48GB of memory!

Is it too much to ask EVGA to figure out why the board is able to CONSISTENTLY boot with 96GB of memory after clearing CMOS, but not when ANY BIOS settings are saved (even the default ones)? I really hope you won't abandon those people who spent so much money on EVGA products, just to find out they're unable to do what they intended to do.

Thank you in advance!

Re:EVGA Classified SR-2 - BIOS A58 Released 2013/05/04 05:53:50 (permalink)
In the absence of a publicly accessible bug tracking tool, I think we need to start keeping a track of BIOS bugs that various people are encountering. For example:

1) BIOS profile doesn't save the default boot GPU - I only just discovered that one this morning.

2) Profile 1 / Profile 2 saving issues - come on, guys, this type of issue should never have made it past the v1 BIOS release QA.

3) Booting issues with 96GB of RAM (the CPUs support more, and dual ranked ECC DDR3 x4 RDIMMs of 16GB are available for up to 192GB, too).

Plus the ones I mentioned earlier in this thread. Bugs like this might be ignorable if you are trying to compete with the bottom of the market with products targeted at people that will buy anything as long as it's cheap. It is definitely not acceptable at the top end of the market where the SR-2 appears to be targeted (by price tag if by nothing else).

Hello,

The solution for error message CMOS CHECKSUM BAD and Not enough space pci device.

In my case I disable the port pcix No. 5.

ca solved my case I think with more ports pcix use the bios does not happen again to assign error on boot up then.

This BIOS update is causing my machine to freeze when I am in the BIOS going through different menus!  I followed instructions exactly, and I have never had a problem flashing the BIOS multiple times before on this machine.  I am reverting back to the A56.  This has never happened before on the old BIOS.

I had a bad checksum error on startup after flashing.  I don't know why it said that.

Yes.  It happened twice after I loaded optimal defaults.  Very scary.  I'm back on A56 now and the freezes are gone.

I wouldn't discount a possible marginal hardware problem, considering that nobody else seems to have reported it. Are you running ES Xeons or real ones?

3) Booting issues with 96GB of RAM (the CPUs support more, and dual ranked ECC DDR3 x4 RDIMMs of 16GB are available for up to 192GB, too).

96GB of RAMs are working on this board without any problem so ****? of course, 192GB would be better, i dont know why 16GB modules are detected in this board with only half capacity...maybe really bios bug, which would be nice to solve...

to EVGA staff: is there any possibility that this new BIOS are making boards dead ? we have three SR-2 boards, one is two years old, works ok until now with A56, flashed A58 few weeks ago, works OK now too. but also we have two new boards (bought feb 2013), worked two months with A56 OK, week ago we flashed A58 and in last three days both boards are dead. or better said, no devices are detected in pcie slots one, two, three and four. no vga, no raid card, no network card...nothing. but the slots are lighting red, so they are recieving power. slots five, six and seven works OK. all three boards are watercooled, so heat should not be an issue. slots are no more working with older A56 too. when the vga (low profile 5450 ati) is in slot 1 - 4, bios post code writes 2E error and there is one short and eight long beeps, so definitelly "not detected video card". of course we tried another PSU, many vga cards...another cpu...strange. we will have to rma these boards probably...but i just dont understand why they died after two months of hard work, both in few days.

@CZ_MaWa - if your board can reliably detect > 48GB you are in a minority. Mine starts to fail to detect all of 6x8GB intermittently with RAM clock speed over 1333MHz.

Regarding seemingly dead slots - what case are you using? I have experienced a similar issue - none of my GPUs would work in the first slot. It turns out, the cards weren't seating properly. I took the back plate off one of the GPUs so I could push the card all the way in, and it came up fine. I am not sure if this is an issue with the board "thickness", or a combination of mounting spacer-screws as shipped with my PC-P80 case, but putting some washers under the motherboard mounts to raise them by 1-2mm around the slot area solved the problem. It's worth checking before wasting time on RMA-ing the board.

it worked two months all ok, so i am afraid it is not fault of the case itself, but of course, i tried both boards on the wooden table too, outside the case, with same result. really strange...

That is indeed strange. Then again, if you bought the boards together recently, it stands to reason you got two from a dodgy batch. But hey, that's what the 10 year warranty is for on these things - at least you have some "spare" while your RMA is being processed. :)

Now they need to update the RST code so I can RAID five 3TB drives.  It sees them fine, but initializes in AHCI mode.  I cannot create a RAID volume in either the BIOS or in RST under Windows.  Windows see's all 5 drives as blank 3TB drives.  Now if I go ahead and plug the 640G drives in, the RAID comes right up.  I was disappointed, although BIOS 56 was from 2011.  I saw that there was a release from this year (58) and I was hoping this could have been fixed.  No love.  I emailed support.  Got nowhere.  Come on EVGA, there's a LOT of people who use these boards.  I am even looking for a cheap used one for a second test machine / workstation.  I can't be the only person who has tried to RAID5 several 3TB drives on the Intel ports of an SR-2.  Please tell me that us "storage minded" folks can look forward to an update to resolve this.  Or maybe a No-Fate type of third party fix.

3) With every Linux kernel that has PCIE hotplug support built in, on a cold boot, the ICH10 keeps flapping when the hotplug driver tries to connect to it. This floods the console and renders the machine completely unusable. Reboot into BIOS, change the clock speed significantly (e.g. from 133 to 180), save and exit, the machine will power off and restart itself. Go back into the BIOS, set the FSB back to what it was, save and exit, the machine won't power off this time, it will continue to boot and the PCIE hotplug flood won't happen. This implies there is something badly flawed with the BIOS initialization of hardware, particularly ICH10.
(Edit: Nope, just tested this as well - still breaks on a cold-boot and fixes itself as described.)
