Okay so I've had this card for 3 weeks and compared to the 980 GTX Strix which has been flawless for a year in the same computer I must say I'm pretty annoyed right now if this is how it's going to continue. I've tried all these 372.xx (50, 70, 90 I think) and all 3 have given me a driver crash where the screen freezes and then resumes after a few seconds.

Only thing I've switched apart from drivers is my monitor which is now a 165Hz G-Sync IPS from ASUS (running it at 144 Hz though). Card is running stock OC, CPU is a 4790K on stock clocks and PSU is a EVGA 850 suprnova g2 something. The card boosts to 20xx something and then goes to like 1962 stable at 73 degrees with 40-43% fan.

No issues for 2 weeks with a very little gaming due to a bad cold (DOOM, Mad Max, F1 2016, GOD EATER, Attack on Titan) and then my problems started when I wanted to lower the temperature a bit and didn't really feel the need to run 100+ fps...

.50 Crash with RTSS frame limiter at 60 in Mad Max (This game just freezes 2-3 seconds and continues)
.50 Crash 1 min after turning off Mad Max while browsing the shop in Steam
.70 Crash with RTSS frame limiter at 60 in Mad Max

Stopped using the frame limiter in Mad Max and finished it, maybe 4 hours consecutive and a few hours every now and then to finish side stuff crash free.

.90 Crash (4x in a row in event viewer) in the new Deus Ex Mankind DLC after 45 min in game, when I entered the menu in it (Game crashes with a error dialog that your card probably isn't receiving enough power or something else)
.90 Crash (3x in a row in EV) same thing after just 15 minutes when I opened the menu

Set the game to single display performance and prefer maximum power instead of optimal in the game specific settings and I managed to finish the game without crashing again for 2 hours.

Now there is clearly something wrong somewhere since it seems to cause driver crashes whenever the GPU usage goes down. Been monitoring it on MSI afterburner and the usage drops to barely anything when you entered the inventory in Deus Ex.

If it decides to crash again I'll probably try the 369.81 drivers since I've heard the 372 drivers (Which actually seem to be needed for the Forza 3 game that I'm considering if I understood stuff correctly) have issues for high end OCs, still shouldn't be causing these crashes in low usage though. Other idea I have is to increase the voltage curve on the lower end so that it doesn't drop so much but having to do this is once again something that shouldn't be needed on factory clocks.

Coming from a crash free card to this constant power management tweaking is quite the annoyance.

Optimal power is part of the issue.  Run Adaptive on your global settings and set each game to Prefer Maximum Performance on the program settings.  With Optimal it drops power to the GPU when usage goes down and the card isn't under load in things like the inventory menu and it subsequently has an issue.

I have same problem with GTX 1070 SC Gaming ACX 3.0. I had freeze, crash in game and with driver setting "maximum power" : no crash during 1h30 and  again freeze.

I'll probably try to exchange it at the store instead for a Asus or MSI but I just can't figure out this, it feels like something is wrong with the card on a fundamental level concerning low usage scenarios.

-Crashes when GPU usage is low through frame rate limiting or inventory screens in Mad Max and Deus Ex Mankind Divided (I think the prefer maximum performance is helping).
-Unigine Heaven was fine at 2100Mhz for a hour, otherwise I've been running it at factory settings. 3D Mark Time Spy also doesn't seem to cause any issues at all.
-GTA 5, F1 2016 all fine without crashes for hours, letting the fps run free between 60-144 (V-Sync) and the settings are at a point where it almost never hits 144.
-There's weird monitor flickers at times when I try to get the card into idle clocks using the inspector's multi monitor power saver.
-Strange artifacts very rarely in Firefox when scrolling, think it's like once per week but still it looks crazy when it happens.

Been considering trying increase the voltage on the lower usage levels on those voltage curves, never had to mess with them before though.

For the heck of it try changing the screen res and change it back.. as in don't actually except the change when it asks you if you want to keep the new res.

I have strange issue when I first boot up windows. Really hard to explain other then menus and Windows Explorer seems leggy and the graphics is way off and it won't draw windows or menus and will hang for 20-30 secs till it will update and show it. Scrolling a window will hang as well. It will be like that till I go into display properties and change the screen res. I just pic anything and when it goes to changer it and ask if I want to keep the new screen res I say no to revert and everything is fine again.. from there on out everything is fine.

I've noticed this issue every since moving from the 168 drivers to the 170+ drivers.

Thinking it's a driver issue where like it's not using the right amount of voltage at first but never bothered to up the lower end voltages.

No idea if it's related to what your experiencing as you are gaming but maybe the voltages will always be off till a screen res change.

If not use DDU and flush all old Nvidia drivers and try the 168 drivers before exchanging the card.

Also, be sure that your computer power is set to Performance and not Balanced and disable any power saving functions in Windows.  Definitely worth looking at this.

Did you change the power setting as I recommended in the second post to Prefer Maximum Performance on applications panel?

Everything should be set to performance, I'll double check once I get home. I changed from optimal to adaptive on the general settings and I've put max perf on every game I've been using since then. So far at least GOD EATER 2 10h+, GTA5 5h+, Deus Ex and Witcher 3 menu spamming to cause usage fluctuations hasn't crashed the drivers.

Spoke to soon I guess... decided to try Far Cry Primal and the darn thing went BOOM in the options before even continuing my old game. Tried starting the game 3 more times and the display drivers crashed within 1 minute after reaching the menu. Rebooted the computer since firefox went 100% black screen also at this point, and now upon reboot it seems to work again.

EDIT: Well this is a new one for me, cycling the preset options have caused a crash in debug mode as well in Far Cry Primal and it seems repeatable so far. Going into the game and then cycling the presets doesn't crash it.

I've had it queued up for a bit so I decided to reinstall Windows 10 from scratch since I've been meaning to get rid of a RAID 0 array I had set up for my game installations.

Windows 10 decided to install 369.09 drivers directly from windows update without allowing me to do anything about it so I decided to try them for a bit.

-I can no longer crash Far Cry Primal on will in the options menu, and for 30 minutes in-game it had no issues either.
-Played Deus Ex Mankind for an hour with optimal power setting in Nvidia settings, no issues with the inventory screens which blew up several times before.
-Tested some GTA V and interestingly enough the game seemed much smoother than before at the same fps (55-60 fps is fine now, before it required like 75 fps to feel smooth on G-Sync), did read the 372.xx drivers increased micro stutters for some people so that might be it for GTA V for me, hadn't noticed anything in other games however.
-EVGA recommended trying that OC Scanner of theirs so I ran some of those tests for 15 min each also, no issues even though the tests were short since I'm a bit time limited trying to do all this in one evening.

Sadly I lost almost a terabyte of game installs since I removed my RAID and it's taking me some time to get them all back on 100/10 but I guess it's just 'time will tell' to see what happens with this new install and driver for different games. If everything is fine for a week I might retry a new driver or one of those 372.xx drivers and see if all issues come flooding back in.

I leave my global setting @ Maximum Performance, this way it utilizes the maximum voltage allowed for all apps/games. Optimal/Adaptive setting are is too vague, what is the difference? It would take too long for me to set the power usage per program/app, I have hundreds of games installed.

If you installed the new GeForce experience...this could be causing you issues.  It has a "share" mode that is on by default...and this caused even my desktop to be sluggish while running folding @ home (i7-5280K, Titan X Pascal).  I turned this off and things are glorious.

Amen to that. GeForce Experience is serious BLOATWARE! Are you really that lazy and can't set your own GPU advanced graphic settings? That is all that garbage does.....

Yeah it only takes me a couple minutes to setup my NVCP settings for all my games after a clean driver update. There no reason to have GFE installed unless you use one of functions, it tends to not optimize games properly anyways.
