Ok after updating the MB bios once the thumb drive ships and testing I will RMA the card again instead of buying a new motherboard if the issue doesn't go away.

Why would you do that? It's the board that is the problem. Clearly running Gen2 has stopped the problem. Or are you still having issues?

Because an RMA is free and a motherboard is 100+ dollars, especially these old 1155 socket ones. I did not have issues last night and today, it's kind of nice actually. Going to test more tonight and tomorrow when I have time.

Like I said there isn't a problem with the video card. The issue is related to the motherboard/bios. Running gen2 is a temp fix that could work as a permanent fix if you don't mind running in gen2 mode all the time. Hopefully the bios update fixes the problem and you can run Gen3. The difference between Gen2 (x16 2.0) & Gen3 (x16 3.0) are nothing... https://www.techpowerup.c...xpress_Scaling/10.html

I set it to gen 2 I also underclocked the card core & mem clock by 111 mhz, so if I have no crashes tomorrow I will set it back to factory clock and if it crashes then there is an issue with the video card.

Sounds like a plan.

Okay no issues still, today going to remove the 111mhz core / memory clock and going to try all day to play different games and make it crash. Going to respond tomorrow with how it goes, if it doesn't crash all day today it's safe to say the gen2 change on the motherboard solved the issue, if it does it's safe to say that underclocking the card solved the issue. See ya tomorrow.

It looks like a bad video board. Time for RMA replacement. Excellent job of troubleshooting on your part.

They don't want to RMA it, months ago I was offered a paid for advanced RMA, now I am pulling teeth and being told the motherboard is at fault. One represenative told me that the brand new PSU I bought from them is fluctuating on the 12v rail, which I don't know where he got from because I never actually told them the voltages on the new PSU, only the old one I replaced that was 100% fine.

An EVGA rep denied your RMA request after we went through all of this trouble of narrowing it down to the video board? I think you need to speak with another representative.

I wouldn't say denied, but took our forum troubleshooting and shifted the blame back to the motherboard with (in my opinion) the motive to not RMA. They are really convinced that the "testing" they did on the first card is fool proof and another RMA would not resolve the issue, I mentioned the underclocking in my most recent reply but I do not expect to get a coherent reply back.

EVGA claimed that none of the GTX-680 boards that I received RMA replacements for were defective but I knew better. I can only conclude that their testing methods are flawed. My 680 would be fine for weeks with a meager +100 OC and then start locking up on a more frequent basis. I knocked the OC down by 10 and things were fine for another week or so. I continued knocking my OC down again and again until I was at stock clocks and the situation continued until it was unbearable. That's when I applied for RMA. They never denied my request but when I followed up each and every time they insisted my returned 680 was fine. IDK anymore. These last two RMA replacements are rock solid and I have had zero issues with either one for several years now so I know my original boards were defective.

The only Z77 motherboard I have been able to find anywhere is the ASRock Z77 Extreme4: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157293&cm_re=z77-_-13-157-293-_-Product
I have a Z77 Extreme4 motherboard in a PC I built for my sister and it's not a bad choice.

Yeah that was the one I was looking at, really destroys my 144hz monitor fund though.

I had to run my 2600k on Gen2 for the PCI-E slots too. I would insist on a replacement video board first before you get a new motherboard and have the same problems.
