Re: Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q 2014/12/11 21:51:56 (permalink)
Picked up the last one in stock at my local Microcenter today... but had a bit of a big issue. Notice the corner of the box... didn't think anything of it:

Oh how wrong was I! This thing is DESTROYED!

So I take a second trip an hour away to take it back, furious. They end up selling me the floor display model for $639.96 which was in pretty much perfect condition (minus a slight scratch to the anti-glare coating across the bottom from a careless cleaning), and with every pixel working. Thoughts so far...

It's definitely smoother than my Yamakasi Catleap at 119Hz from what I can see, probably due to it being TN more than 144Hz. Gsync is pretty awesome, though I never really noticed tearing on my old monitor. I'm going to break it out again to compare. What I HATE about the Swift though, and hated about my old ASUS 1080p panel from years ago... this stupid anti-glare coating makes light colors, particularly whites appear grainy and rainbow-ish! It is hideous especially coming from my glossy Catleap. The 4K PB287Q I tried did not exhibit this issue surprisingly. I have no need for anti-glare, so this is a huge negative because it is distorting color and image quality and is just distracting. I do love love love the thin bezels, and how the display panel itself sits almost entirely flush with the bezels themselves. Makes for an attractive display. The colors and all look fantastic, it is bright, and the viewing angles are great. This truly is an amazing TN panel. Looking at high quality images, I can't say I even miss my IPS screen... but I will do a side-by-side comparison.

Tomorrow I have the Acer 4K Gsync coming. I'm going to be doing my own comparisons among these monitors and see what I think and have a month to decide what monitor I am going to keep. It's really going to boil down to beauty versus smoothness... but I did get a great deal on the Swift. I can already say that 1440p at 27" is pretty ugly compared to 4K at 28". Games are way less detailed and the desktop is not nearly as sharp as what I would like. This is due to smartphones, tablets, etc. hitting crazy PPI's. Some people say 4K at 28" is too small... I say for a monitor, it's just right. More to come.

Seeing as this monitor ( ROG) is not selling for anything less than $1200 & higher  everywhere I see it - definite NO buy -   until it comes back down to a semi-reasonable price of $850 or so....

I put in an order for mine for less than 800...they won't have them in stock until the 1st of January, but it's definitely a lower price than other places I've seen.

I had a chance to try out my new XB280HK this weekend. Wow, I tried Metro Last Light out. Awesome, detail, color, and super smooth with G-sync, it's like a whole new game. I just wish I could play it in surround :) Some of you may want to consider this monitor, might be easier to find, but I notice they sell quickly too.

The Anti glare coating is what is keeping me from the purchase. So for now, I'll stick with my catleap at 90Hz. The XB280HK looks like a good candidate once I buy a couple 980Ti's whenever they come out.

tbh i NEVER bought any screens that werent Glossy. To me, I felt like i had to always have glossy, even on my laptop screen. If that is all that is holding you back... you need to reconsider. This is my first matte screen ever and i have to admit, it's AMAZING. You WONT be disappointed with this screen. I am honestly so glad I made this purchase.

to add to this, I am a glossy fan too, but the XB280HK has a good anti glare coating IMO. The colors are so vibrant as well it isn't an issue at all for me.

Eh, I've been using the Swift for awhile now and I still can't get over the glare coating while I'm just doing regular browsing. I don't really notice it while gaming, but on the desktop, the shimmering it gives brighter colors makes me think something's wrong with the display lol. Considering I'm using Catleaps alongside it, it's a constant reminder.

Also, I had to set the gamma waaaay down in the Nvidia driver to not make it look so washed out. Setting it down to .70 gamma in the NVCPL shows me just how good it's color reproduction really is for a TN. It looks soooo close to my IPS's, though it is a bit warm. I wish I had a calibration tool to use.

The only screens in my house that are glossy are my LED samsung TVs, my computer LCDs always had that matte thing going for it, so i never noticed. CRTs back in the day were also glossy too, technically, but i really don't see a difference. There are too many pluses to the swift for that to matter.

Looks like there's a new monitor on the way that's a 144hz IPS (or HVA panel) utilizing gsync. 27" and 1440p. Didn't think that would happen for awhile still, which is why I bought the Swift.

I really don't understand a 4k that maxes (until updates) at 60 mhz with all the hype, and why would anyone pick this over a 144 refresh rate.I understand it is not a TN panel and updates could jump it to 120 mhz....what is the niche for this new monitor? Is all the hype because it is a IPS?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJAIZmuNt1M

5-6 ms g2g is what Asus says but I bet when it's tested w/an oscilloscope it'll be higher. The ROG Swift PG278Q measures around 2-3 ms g2g with an oscilloscope and has one of the lowest input lags of any display ever made. So I don't see these AHVA panels ever being replacements for the PG278Q for FPS or twitch fighting gamers.

Yeah same here, no BL bleed or dead pixels. Only thing I dislike is the AG coating, they should have created two versions of the display, one with AG and one w/glossy. As good as this display is I'll probably sell it once the Acer Predator releases.

Mine has what I consider heavy bleed all along the bottom, but I can't really see it unless it's basically on a black screen. Zero dead pixels though! I still find myself fighting with the color calibration on this thing though :( I guess using an IPS panel as a secondary isn't making it any easier lol.
