Wondering if anyone can back up what I am seeing. All cards are on air.

I have two 980ti classifieds, was running in SLI and hit 33,250-ish on firestrike (graphics score only). That was with GPU at 1492MHz and memory with a +400. I don't remember the memory speed. If I disable SLI, I can hit 1520MHz stable on each card. That's a +125 on GPU and +495 on memory. At that OC, I can get 21,900-ish on firestrike (graphics score only).

I am currently in the queue for step-up to some 1080s and got impatient and acquired a 1070. I can OC that one to 2125 stable on GPU, but even at that speed, it still only hits 18,922 on firestrike (graphics score only). The overall scores are reflective of the lower graphics scores as well, meaning the single 980ti beats the single 1070 in overall score as well, by about 1,000.

I thought the 1070 was supposed to be an improvement over the 980ti. I know the 980ti is a beast and I have had good success with overclocking...

Thoughts?

High OC to high OC, a 980 Ti is around 10 to 15% faster overall. With some games that isn't the case and they're neck and neck, and with a few the 1070 is faster.

No, the 1070 is basically the same performance as a 980 Ti stock for stock, and as I said it's a bit slower overall when both are heavily OCed. It probably has a lot to do with the memory bus widths.

That could perhaps change with driver maturity.

980ti also has more cuda cores and some games/benchmarks run faster with more cuda cores. That's why you see one beat the other or vice versa or both being nearly tied.

Thanks for the information. I appreciate the replies.

I haven't done any game FPS comparisons between cards because it's hard to replicate. From the reviews I found I was seeing the 1070 perform about 7-9% better in games than the 980ti. I wasn't expecting the benchmarks to be the other way around.

I guess I should focus more on whether the gameplay is acceptable with the 1070, which it definitely is.

    For argument sakes...

The 1070 has a 250gb bandwidth, and the 980TI has a 336gb bandwidth (more than the 1080). I would like to argue that the 1070 will slow down much more when it gets close to 8gb than the 980ti will when it gets to its 6gb.

You make a lot of sense. It's a matter of whats more beneficial: more ram less performance, less ram better performance comparing the 980ti to 1070. For me I decided I needed the 8GB capacity since I play Fallout 4 mainly and now also Deus Ex Mankind Divided. I needed that 8GB capacity since my modded fallout uses 357 active mods and with those it has pushed my VRAM to nearly 100% (I'm amazed that it's just barely under at 99%) if I add anything else to the game it will spill over into my system RAM since I have a mod that let's the system RAM combine with VRAM. Honestly I wish I would have saved up a little more and went with the 1080 because of the higher memory bandwidth, more cuda cores and the higher quality GDDR5X. I'm happy with the 1070 for now though, but I think I read somewhere that EVGA won't be making their version of the 1080ti...is this true? If so I'm a little disappointed about that as I was hoping to get one later but I want it to be EVGA as I don't like the other brands designs and features.

Can't answer the question about the 1080TI, but many are saying it's going to happen, based on some of the posts made. I would highly recommend you look at some of the articles that were made under "Computer industry news" from time to time, a lot of good material in that section. A lot of articles are put in there, and I do recall there was a post about the 1080TI. Here is one:
    http://forums.evga.com/1080ti-specs-leaked-on-Nvidia-m2549974.aspx

To me, bandwidth is very important once all the VRAM is loaded. It's almost day and night, and has a huge impact on FPS. Compare the 1070 and 1060. The 1060 has only 2gb of VRAM less than that of a 1070, but also has only a 192gb bandwidth limit. The 1080 is 320, almost double that of the 1060. So, the 1070 will probably be faster a bit, but I think the 980TI will be "smoother".
