980 Ti Classified or 980 Ti K|NGP|N?

So I've been waiting with extremely baited breath for the 980 Ti Classified to get back in stock somewhere, but in the meantime I'm starting to consider the 980 Ti K|NGP|N.  Now *if* I only end up doing air cooling, am I really throwing that extra $150 in the garbage?  I will be overclocking and am not a hardcore overclocker, but may add my card to a water loop in the future - definitely no LN2 though.

I do love the copper/black aesthetics along with the color changing/changeable logos, but along with the QST BIOS, are those really the only benefits and is it really worth an extra $150?

I would only be buying one of the 72%+ ASIC cards as the price increases for the 74, 78, and 80%+ cards are just highway robbery imo.

My debate - is the K|NGP|N really going to be $150+ better than a Classified?

Thoughts?

You're not throwing it in the garbage technically but its ultimately a waste. The KPE cards should be pushed to their potential and if you just plan to air cool it, you're not going to make use of any of the added benefits of the card which allow it to be pushed for overclocked on L2N or watercooling.  Just go for the classified imo.

I get the point of them selling higher binned cards but by that same logic, with my crap 63.5% score on my 980Ti then they should give me a slight refund on the list price for it being a dud.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you, I've been trying to get a Classy, but now love the look of the K|NGP|N, but I'm gonna say the whole pricing based on ASIC is garbage because the silicon lottery you could buy a Classy and still get 77% quality or so and then you spent all that on bells and whistles, that while cool, not sure are worth another $150 or more. I'm assuming they've cherry picked the GPUs much like the do for the Quadros for those ratings, but you still could have good chance getting the exact or better performance from a Classy with EVGAprecision and saved the cash. Also you probably gonna need to make a decision quick if they are really limited and sell out shortly after tomorrow. : /

Don't get the kingpin if you're not going to put in under LN2, period. Otherwise for everyday use you're paying so much more for a marginal increase in performance.

I would never pay for a Kingpin. You can get a Gigabyte Gaming card and play your silicon lottery with those cards. Many people are reporting ASIC of 80%+ and they overclock to 1550 on air easily due to relaxed voltage limitations compared to all other brands.
For Air cooling a Classified is enough.

But for water cooling?  I'll most likely put it in a solid loop in the near future.

If you read Kingpin's statement, watercooling and air cooling is same for this crop of cards so whether you have Kingpin or Classified it does not matter. What matter is are you willing to play silicon lottery or are you going to pay a premium for a really sub-par ASIC rating of 72%.

Technically, if I were thinking straight then, I can buy a card, test it, sell it off at ebay for 20 dollars less. Buy another card and sell it on ebay for 20 dollars less until I find one with a high enough ASIC as a Kingpin card at 900+ dollars. I can do that about 5-6 times before I hit the lowest ASIC rated Kingpin card. If you are water cooling, ASIC will not really benefit. Anyone who has done water cooling barely got another 25 MHz on their core due to lower temperatures. That is worth about 50 points in 3dmark firestrike test. Are you willing to pay 150$+ for 50 points in 3dmark? If the answer is yes, go Kingpin.

The reason I recommend classified is because of a silent air cooler on it not because it will be higher ASIC. You can find higher ASIC typically on Gigabyte cards.

More like 90 bucks each time. If you sell a classified on ebay for $700 you're gonna be paying 13% in fees to paypal & ebay.

Kingpin is made for LN2, it's that simple. If you have the money to burn, do it. It shouldn't matter to you that I, and others, think that would be a waste of money. If you plan to watercooling, go Classified. If you stay on air, SC+ (or Classy if you're feeling frisky).

Can always buy and return to store and pay 10% restock. You'll come out ahead eventually instead of buying the kingpin.

On a side note, I think it's funny-slash-interesting that Newegg removed the 980 Ti Classified listing completely from their site - must of gotten tired of people spamming the refresh button for that page!

Thanks for all the great feedback, everyone! Went ahead and got a 980 Ti Classy ordered from Newegg - hopefully I'm lucky and get a great card.

Maybe I'll step-up to the K|NGP|N just for sh|ts and grins and bragging rights later on down the road

I guess you convince me too, I'm on the same dilema but on sli. I guess normal classified will do just fine on air, and specially on sli where you can get a little lower oc tan single card. Also 150 x 2 is a lot for savings.

I was also hardly thinking what to choose for sli: K|NGP|N or Classy.

I really like the design of K|ngp|ns but for air cooling its probably just waste of money as mentioned.
Additionaly not sure how full copper heatsinks will look in my black/yellow build and 3 power cords for each card means big mess with cables.

Not very happy with some small red accents on Classifieds also but I was too tired of waiting for MSI Lightning series which probably will again have blue leds...
Some users are reporting coil whine but that doesn't mean Kingpins won't also have it (or its just matter of power supplies?)

Thats why I decided to take two Classifieds yesterday from eu.evga when they were on stock a couple hours before K|ngp|n 'fight'.
For now I feel little regret why not choose top end cards but I'm sure it will pass when Classyfiedes arrive:)

BTW. It will be my first sli build, hope I will like it.
