Hi All, Just got me a 980 Kingpin turn up in the post today can't wait to get to work on it My question is I want to over clock on air at the moment, I have a Antec EA-550 Platinum PSU, will this be good enough for this card? I understand if I wish to go onto water cooling in the future that I may need a beefier PSU & move up in case size. I'm limited to a small form factor PSU at present as I'm in a small case, so will this PSU suffice? Or would I be better off with a 750W Silverstone Strider, 80 plus gold PSU? I could do without the extra expense of buying a new PSU but If needs must then so be it. Eagerly await a reply Thanks

I'd say if you distribute the GPU load across two of the +12v rails on your PSU and don't OC the CPU/GPU too much, you'll have just enough...

The only concerns would be if you have enough spare power connectors for the card, as well as the other devices you have in your system. The K|ngp|n edition requires a pair of 8pin connectors and a 6pin. You have two 8pins, through the 6+2's, and you'll have to use the 6pin to 2x 4pin adapter for the remaining 6pin. Provided you have enough spare 4pins, you'll be fine. However, if you have a number of excess components connected to your system, such as a large number of hard drives or fans, you might be pushing your luck with the power supply. Likewise, as bdary said, if you do some overclocking on the system, that may also start pushing it up into a situation where the psu may have some problems.

Here's some wattage numbers that you might find useful. Personally I'd get a larger power supply as you would be cutting it close, especially with oc'ing components. http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/geforce-gtx-980-sli-review,4.html Measured power consumption GTX 980- System in IDLE = 119 Watts
- System Wattage with GPU in FULL Stress = 280 Watts
- Difference (GPU load) = 161 Watts
- Add average IDLE wattage ~10 Watts
- Subjective obtained GPU power consumption = ~ 171 Watts
Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation: - GeForce GTX 980 - On your average system the card requires you to have a 400~500 Watt power supply unit.
- GeForce GTX 980 in 2-way SLI - On your average system the cards require you to have an 700~800 Watt power supply unit as minimum.
- GeForce GTX 980 in 3-way SLI - On your average system the cards require you to have a 900~1000 Watt power supply unit as minimum.
If you are going to overclock your GPU or processor, then we do recommend you purchase something with some more stamina. There are many good PSUs out there, please do have a look at our many PSU reviews as we have loads of recommended PSUs for you to check out in there. What would happen if your PSU can't cope with the load: - Bad 3D performance
- Crashing games
- Spontaneous reset or imminent shutdown of the PC
- Freezing during gameplay
- PSU overload can cause it to break down

Hi Guys, I wish to thank you all very much for your responses they are gratefully appreciated I've gone with the majority advice & ordered a 750W Silverstone Strider 80 plus gold PSU so should have more headroom & more stability Thanks again for advice, your all stars

EVGA models are better than models from Silvestone. Performance, warranty, technical support, design of PSU case. Unique EVGA PSU grill is now well know in IT world.

Hi Vlada011, Yeah I'm in total agreement, I love EVGA quality/build/customer support, all my other 5 systems in the house have evga power supplies & older gfx cards, but I'm limited in the system the kingpin is in, I'ts a Antec case small form so I need a small form factor PSU, silverstone I think are the only ones that do a half decent psu, If EVGA had a small form factor psu I'd be on it like a fly around *hit.

A Kingpin edition card, air cooled, in a small form factor? Heat is going to be your biggest limitation. I don't think the Kingpin card will act like anything special over any other version of the card in those conditions.

This is a temporary measure not for the long haul, It will be going in a larger case & under water, but as it stands today it will be in a small form factor. I understand that I will be limited in this current small case . I didn't want to buy a SC or Classified version of the card only to replace it again with kingpin in the future, bit of forward thinking in a round about way Thought there was a little method in the madness
