Yep..Also, some keyboards come with a PS/2 to USB Keyboard Adapter..You might look through your spare parts and see if you have one that you've forgotten about if you don't have a PS/2 keyboard handy..Or there's USB to PS/2 Keyboard Adapters for the other way around too that come with some keyboards too.

I'm sure I had one, but I lost it, so I'll use an old ps/2 keyboard

You should list all your hardware.

Might want to take out the video card, or try an older one and see if it POSTs.

Also, I just seen that an i7-970 needs the latest BIOS (Version 83) to run in that board..If the board has an older BIOS it probably won't even work at all, so you would then need to put a CPU in it that's supported right from the get-go and then update the BIOS or take it to a PC repair shop and have them do it.

I've seen used i7-920 CPUs go for about 10 dollars on auction sites.

The i7 920 didn't work, it posted 7f and after some seconds in the bios settings it freezed, the other times it posted ff after cycling through some codes.

OK first of all make sure only one hard drive is connected, one stick of ram and minimum USB accessories. Retry and see if the freeze continues. If it boots and goes pass the BIOs let us know. For SATA the X58 has both Intel and Marvell controllers so use the very first SATA slot if using a SATA based hard drive.

I connected my drive to sata port 1 and removed 2 of my 3 ram sticks, now it cycles through some codes and sometimes restarts and at the end goes to ff, one time it went to 01

Well you said that..."I connected my drive to sata port 1 and removed 2 of my 3 ram sticks, now it cycles through some codes and sometimes restarts and at the end goes to ff, one time it went to 01." So those actions seem to have advanced your troubleshooting of the issues at hand.
