Unless they improve thermals somehow 7000 series chips will still be the the strongest overclockers. TDP is ridiculous for sustained workloads, Huge list of security exploits. X299 is dead (7980XE,7960X owner)

    Re: x299 Dead??? 2019/10/01 01:51:39 (permalink)
AMD throw in shadow X99 and X299. Without Ryzen they would dominate.
Now suddenly become obvious that Intel didn't make real improvements long time.
But X299 could serve until DDR5. No any reason to upgrade on Ryzen.
If price of 12 and 14 cores Intel drop situation is completely different.
Imagine if i9-9920X and i9-9940X drop on Ryzen price.
On X299 Dark I would rather stay on Intel until real improvement with DDR5, USB 4.0 is finished, and PCI-E 5.0 is even possible.

i9-9900X, i9-9820X and better models or i9-7940X, i9-7960X are competitive processors only price is unreal with performance.
OK now AMD dominate but race will last forever. Excellent performance of AMD are not reason just like that to dissamble good performing computer and invest in their platforms. That could be done in any moment. If Intel continue to struggle with problems and AMD adopt DDR5 first but Intel continue to stay silent about new features then is really time to switch to AMD. Now it's not, at least for people with X99 who can't afford to upgrade fast and special owners of X299.

AMD Ryzen R9-3900X is compare with Intel i9-9900K with much less number of cores and Intel i9-9900X.
Stronger models with similar number of cores overclocked are competitive. AMD is much newer and it's logic little advantage.
But i9-9940X overclocked 200-300MHz it's different situation. Price force a lot of people to upgrade to AMD.
But if i9-9940X drop to 500$ and i9-9980XE on 750$ then a lot of people would think twice.
Intel should done that instantly after presentation of R9-3900X.

Look how some guy build Monoblock for EVGA X299 Dark.
I don't know how someone who have this board could even to think on AMD.
Next stage would be measure of plastic shield and I/O Port shield and building same thing from aluminum and powdercoating.
    RGB circus need to die.
Only with this kind of work that could be reached.

I would really like to people who have machines and tools to work with metal like aluminum and copper start to offer solutions for high end motherboards, better and nicer VRM and chipset cooling, I/O Shiled cover better, etc...
This should evolve in that direction, not expensive RIGs to looks like Aliexpress sponsor them.

Because 500+ watts of heat. Slower in rendering workloads than Ryzen due to tiny cache. Slower in games than mainstream core i9 and ryzen 7nm due to mesh architecture. Way lower idle power consumption than 14nm. Security exploits. AVX bugs in the microcode. Gimped raid support without Vroc. Gimped PCI-E Bifurcation

This thread is about x299s future as a competitor though not a custom waterblock someone has made or existing customers. Every point made by Wendell in that video is valid. When threadripper 7nm comes out with 64pcie gen 4 lanes x299 will have nothing to fire back with. My 3900x uses less than half the power of my 7960x @ 4.8ghz and is faster in blender due to the massive cache and faster in games. There is no place x299 can remain competitive. The x299 dark is a fantastic board one of the most stable boards i have ever owned but the cpus are absolute power hogs and there is no fix for that on 14nm, combined with the other issues it makes no sense. Content professionals will take the faster and more power efficient 7nm ryzen chips with 64pcie lanes and huge cache and gamers will either buy ryzen or 9900k i9

EVGA needs to make an AM4 and Threadripper board as intel is out of the game for a while.

Yes, yes Ryzen iz 2 years newer so what.
Maybe is better choice then i9-9900K and better choice if someone have really old platform
but no reason to owners of X299 processors upgrade to Ryzen.
Bigger problem is because Intel now fish fools and not educated people who pay 3 times higher price for same performance then AMD.
That's bigger problem for me, because i9 processors don't need discount, they need cut price on half or more.
Who knows how many i9 will be destroyed because sellers didn't sold them and never will.
I think Intel should donate to us, his fans.

X299 came out in June 2017, it is getting close to EOL. If they push it for one more generation, i'll be very surprised.

Yes but the discussion is not about current x299 owners upgrading its about x299 being competitive in the future space which it cannot and will not be. The power draw alone is so high on these processors once you have owned one you will understand they are space heaters they make little sense in this market at any price. The argument is there is no point to buy x299 period regardless of the costs when it is inferior to everything else currently offered and will be totally EOL when 7nm threadripper comes out

Not going to lie... I've been gearing up to jump from my 8700K to the new AMD 3950X. However, with the 3950X delay and this latest price drop from Intel I might just have to go with a 10980XE. Honestly, the only reason is that I have been lusting over the EVGA X299 Dark since it came out. I so badly want to build with that board, but up until now the CPUs weren't really in my price to performance range. I think the Dark series has the coolest motherboard design language out there and I'm really excited for these new chips to come out. Here is hoping I can finally get on the X299 platform. I've got my new case, radiators, M.2 drives, copper pipes, fittings, and modding supplies ready!

Price for 10940XE will be similar as R9-3950X.
And 10920XE my favorite model from list will cost 100$ more then i9-9900K.
You are so lucky, owners of X299 Dark. If you have some small computer, maybe is time to sell now processors on EBAY if you see 18 cores for 800-900$ you can buy next generation for 980$.

I will stay on mine poor X99/i7-5820K until I save money for DDR5.
Then I will again have great platform.

Can you rewrite this in a way that's understandable? Thanks.

First of all in my personal opinion the new CPUs coming out for X299 are Intel's response to AMD Threadripper and not AMD Ryzen.

One more thing is that more info on 3rd gen Threadripper is coming in a few weeks. AMD's RYZEN 9 3950X is also coming. Looks like 3rd gen Threadripper will have a new motherboard/chipset.

November will be an interesting month for AMD and Intel. If not for TSMC's backlog AMD's launch would not be pushed to November.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

I sold my 9980xe to get a 10980xe so I hope the pricing is true for it lmao.

X299 isn't dead, it's still very much alive for enthusiasts.

    Cool GTX
It is still a Great MB & already ready for 10th gen CPUs

Every single X299 board is 'ready' for cascade lake x, it's basically the same processor as before.

Intel can't fool us with these names.
