Have had the parts for a full system sitting in a pile awaiting my attention for about a year.  Apologize for resurrecting this dead horse, but there are soooo many conflicting reports.
Booted to the BIOS finally yesterday, then discovered that RAID for my 2x 1TB 970 Pros may be an issue.

Has ANYONE been successful in creating a bootable RAID 1 array under Win10 Pro 64-bit using 2x 970 Pro NVMe mounted ON the board?

Don't care if it requires buying the stupid VROC (Std) key or not, I just want to know IF it has been successfully done, and HOW.  IF I can't boot the RAID 1 array, I just won't do it.  My fault I guess for NOT making sure before I went this route.... Just seems stupid that my little Asus Z370 ITX board with an 8086k can do it, but this monster cool board with a 7980XE and ALL those lovely CPU lanes cannot.

Unconscionable actually...

Thank y'all!

    Thank you for that.

I guess I will roll the dice on a STD key and see if it works....

Sure wish I had some confirmation...

Intel's own guide says that VROC is not designed for low QD workloads and you know that the Pro SSDs are not rated for their IOPS / speed over 100% SPAN like the enterprise SSDs so you may see diminishing returns when doing this.

    VROC: https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/memory-and-storage/ssd-software/VROC_Support_on_X299_FAQ.pdf
    Samsung SSD: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/samsung-970-pro-ssd-review,5572-2.html
    Intel SSD for reference: https://ark.intel.com/con...ie-3-1-x4-3d1-tlc.html

I have had both drives in a server and when you use a non enterprise SSD in a VROC let me tell you after ~3minutes of a heavy load it craps outs.  The real question is do oyu need the speed what are you trying to even do with that can your CPU even drive that fast of a drive?  The server below is Quad 18cores at 3Ghz with 768GB of RAM and we have trouble driving the drives at their speeds.

Alrighty then... that was very informative.  THANK YOU!

I simply want to have a 2x 970 Pro NVMe RAID 1 bootable array like I have in my x370 based system.
If VROC is not the answer on the x299 Dark, can it be done with plain 'ole Intel RST?  I seem to have missed that in the manual.
I want the mirror, so I don't have to worry about imaging my boot drive, et al. every day just in case of a "drive" failure.
I CAN do daily imaging, but I'd rather not...  I'd rather simply be able to keep motoring on, stick a new drive in place of the old one and it re-build the array.

I've got that standard vroc key and my WD drives don't work (raid unsupported message), Intel is even confusing in their own spec sheet stuff where they say 3rd party is only supported on Xeon CPUs and X299 only supports Intel SSDs...

I know on my MSI board I can use RST on my M.2 slots and I can make a raid array just fine but not sure if Dark supports that I never bothered to try it.

Love this board, and love the processor....  but I was intending this system as a "gift" to my wife that I would not have to monkey around with. I am beginning to wish I had just build her an (twin to mine) 8086k-based x370 system.  I'll work it out...  just kicking myself for "missing" this "issue" in my research.

There is a report on Amazon that a guy posted that he got 2x 970Pros to boot in RAID 0 with the STD key...  but cannot find a single reference to anyone getting non-Intel SSD NVMe drives to BOOT in RAID 1.

RAID0 is the only supported mode without a key installed but again Intel's support and documentation on this is a bit special to say the least...  It wouldn't be an issue if Intel's M.2 SSDs weren't complete garbage then I'd have no problem buying them.

You could try doing a windows software raid 1 but I forget if that's bootable or not.

Samsung 970 Pro and 970 EVO M.2 NVMe drives will not pair up on the EVGA X299 Dark mobo no matter which VROC key you use. They are not compatible. In fact there is only a tiny list of compatible NVMe SSD's that actually will work in RAID on X299 Dark. I run two Intel 760p's in RAID on that mobo. I used to have two 970 EVO's but ended up having to sell them. Tried both keys and neither worked for the 970's.

Took some work but found this older post of mine https://forums.evga.com/FindPost/2953201

    I just found this FAQ # 59720

How can I configure a VROC Raid array with my EVGA X299 motherboard?

If you use the Intel U.2 cables from their webstore you can at least use VROC with their datacenter U.2 disks which are pretty solid (although expensive).
