Audio out over HDMI on video cards, where does the sound come from? Is it processed by the onboard sound or does the video card have it's own 7.1 surround sound chip?

It comes from a connector on the MoBo. You plug one end of the little cable into the MoBo connector and the other end into your GFX card. EDIT: Yes, I agree with the below posts. What GFX card do you have???...that would be very helpful to know.

It depends on the model graphics card.

The new 400, 500, and I believe some of the new low end 200 series cards have onboard audio processing.  Which is what ATI/AMD has been doing for a while now.  Pretty much any other nvidia video card with HDMI will need the 2 pin SPDIF connector which sends audio from your motherboard through the video card.

Anything above the GTX200 Series does not have the S/PDIF connector on the card.  At least from my experience.

Asus 5850s don't have that either.

So this is bothering me. I bought the 480GTX super clock and when I opened the package there was no SPDIF cable to plug into the mobo and the card. Good thing I had one from my 250gts card. I looked for the connector on the card and I don’t see it fitting into any slot, the slots on the card looks like the case connector piece. So after reading the manual that came with it said some cards don’t need the spdif cable connected to the mobo as they are integrated, and to use the spdif channel output in windows sound configuration. I’m on Windows 7 64bit and I don’t have that output when I connect to my HDTV by HDMI cable that is plugged into both devices.

400/500 Series cards don't need it. You will have sound through your Video Card just be hooking it up through HDMI. I actually went in and disabled it because I didn't need sound through my Video Card. It actually startled be because I wasn't expecting sound through my T.V.
So in general, you don't need anything to do with the S/PDIF header. Just drop the card in the machine hook up the power cables, install the latest drivers for the 400 Series cards which is 260.99 and you should have sound as long as you are hooked up to a Monitor or TV with speakers via HDMI.

Right, on a 4xx or 5xx series card the card gets the sound from the Windows kernel mixer via the PCIe slot and simply outputs it from the HDMI or even DVI ports.

There is no audio processing or anything on the video card, it's just an output.  Any processing is done on your CPU by the game or by the operating system.

The OP still hasn't bothered to make a followup post and tell us what GFX card he has. Oh, well.

That’s why I jumped in and had to ask this question with my GFX card info... Might as well add a point to the topic.
Thanx for the info guys, I haven't hooked the card up to my TV yet. Hopefully all goes as planned.

Unless I am terribly mistaken DVI cannot output audio, just video.

Correct. One must use HDMI or DisplayPort for audio/video combo (on current technology). This is a must for DMCA-protected content such as many Blu-ray discs. In order to play that content one must have a complete chain of compliant components to play that, including the player, video card (which also does the sound), cable, and monitor. The video cards have their own sound decoders, or whatever they're called.

You are both right and wrong.  DVI cannot by itself pass audio, however, it does have the pins in the connector so that when you use the DVI to HDMI adapter + SPDIF cable, it can pass audio.
