Hi all, I'm fairly new to this whole PC gaming.  Recently I purchased an a pretty basic Alienware R4 (i7 3930k + 8Gb RAM + GTX 660)  but also a EVGA GTX 690 aftermarket. Well while I'm playing FarCry 3 on ultra high settings the computer unexpectedly reboots and it goes back to the regular desktop with no errors or anything like nothing happened. If I run Farcry 3 on some custom lower settings like High or Very high it runs great, no hiccups. But if I'm playing Batman Arkham City, GTA4, Borderlands 2 on the highest settings it runs fine so I really don't know whats going on.

Can anyone point me in the right direction ANY help would much appreciated..

I've also installed a 512GB SSD as my primary OS drive and the 2Tb is where I store all my non critical data such as steam and game content data. Don't know if that helps.

THANK YOU

Does your PC physically shut down and go thru the reboot process? Or does it just go to a blackscreen and then to your desktop?

If it is infact rebooting. My biggest concern would be your power supply. Dell (Alienware) is notorious for providing just enough power for the system you bought, leaving very little overhead for upgrades. Farcry 3 is a very demanding game at it's highest settings, I think your GTX 690 might be pulling too much power for your PSU to handle.

Can you post the specs of the PSU your system came with? That would be helpful.

Stock R4 should have a 875W power supply, which should be more than enough.  You might want to confirm that is indeed what size psu you have.  I know they even had the 690 as an option direct from AW (Dell) so not sure why you would be having issues.  How do you have it plugged in?  I know the stock psu has two 6 pin & 6+2 pin cables.  690 takes two 8 pins right?  You would need to grab both 6+2 pin connectors from each cable for it to work.  Is that how you have it?

Was it a new AW, used or refurb?

Maybe... You are forgetting that the GTX 660 his computer came with only requires 24A on the 12v rail. His new GTX 690 requires 46A. If his video card is drawing more power than the PSU can put out, this could certainly cause a reboot when gaming.

I'm not forgetting, like I said, you could have gotten that system equipped with the 690 originally from AW as an option and I am 99% positive that it would have had the same 875W power supply.  I guess either his might be going bad (or is bad) or he doesn't have the power cables configured correctly.  My first thoughts anyways...

I would blame this on your powersupply.

Hey thanks guys for the info and sorry for the late response. To confirm I do have a 875W PSU, it is a new Alienware, and the system completely physically reboots. And yes I do have 6+2 connectors o; P14 and P15 plus the 2 small ones. Would it matter if the 2 connectors are on the same cable?

I think you don't have it corrected right, you should use P15 and P17, which is another cable usually tucked into the chassis down by the power supply.  It should be another cable just like P14 and P15.  Use the 6+2 (P15) and 6+2 (P17).  At least that is how I think I remember the numbering.  I can check later tonight when I get home.

Huh alrighty then... I had it as P14(6+2) and P15(6+2) which was on the same cable... I am definitely going to try that out! I will hit you up when I test it out! thank you for the info .. much much appreciated

So Alienware had 2 8pin connectors on the same cable? lol... how dumb is that?

No, there are two cables....each has a 6 and 6+2 connector.  The two 8 pins are not on the same cable.  Not sure why he connected the way he did, but pretty sure it is the cause of his problems.

I would also blame the PSU, unexpected reboot almost always points to lack of power.

Years ago when I only had a 256MB Geforce 6 6800 GT AGP, I was only using a Antec 430w, and had unexpected reboots in Doom 3 and Far cry 1, replaced the PSU with a enermax 535w and problem was solved.

from then on I always made sure to get a PSU with at least 250w/20a more then my system needs just to allow for capacitor aging.

I had my Corsair TX 750w for over 4 years now and its still works great

I hold similar standards. Still running my Zalman ZM-850HP that I picked up over 5 years ago. Still rocking all my games.

aha, you ran into one of the well known mistakes of PSU's wrong connectors on multi rail PSU will not give enough amperage to the system components.

I remember back when people were using the Corsair HX1000 PSU and had the same problem cause thats basicly 2 x 500w units combined together.

Glad you got it fixed :)

Thank you! I really appreciate the help and most definitely will! actually would you recommend more than 8Gb of RAM if I'm gonna be playing ultra high settings all the time?

You're welcome

I really don't think increasing your system RAM will be of any benefit.  Your biggest benefit will be between your CPU and GPU.  The 3930K you have is a solid CPU.  Overclocking it higher will definitely help and it is the key component as it takes the process info and sends it to the GPU and tells it what to draw.  Your 690 is a beast of a card too, which could be overclocked to get a little extra performance out of it as well.

System RAM really will only come into play for running lots of processes at once, which most likely are not going to be doing while gaming, or running really intense programs such as video rendering or stuff like that.  My system had 8Gb originally and had no issues, I only bumped mine to 16Gb because I do some CAD/engineering work on the side and wanted more headroom.

My system had 8Gb originally and had no issues, I only bumped mine to 16Gb because I do some CAD/engineering work on the side and wanted more headroom.

thank you for all the info.... I'm rather interested on how to overclock both just a wee bit

Re: Alienware aurora r4 + GTX 690 + FarCry 3 (at ultra high settings) = unexpected reboots 2013/10/03 06:33:48 (permalink)
My schedule it pretty busy today, but I will try to shoot you a PM later today with more details.  GPU is pretty straightforward using programs such as Precision X, but to overclock the CPU, you will have to go into the BIOs and change some settings.
