I have heard the call to arms.  I have a CAD file already designed, and I am SO close to making a prototype.  However I am not "at  the office" until another 10-12 days.  I will bang out a prototype as quickly as I can.  One thing I need from anyone who has the dark yet, and calipers, is a measurement or 2 of some chip heights.

I am close to having my new CNC 100% operational which could make a FEW of these at a time.  I will have my hands full of some other projects as well.  Feel free to post if your interested, or any questions.  My computer access is quite limited, but I will be on and off.

2018 update:

Photobucket broke, so here is the most recent picture of what the look like.  I will make 1 more batch before I probably call it quits with these, so if you are interested, let me know.

Now here comes the completed pics
Backside pre-lapping:

Topside w/Delrin top:

Installed:

Top off with O-ring removed:

You can see the lowermost channel that goes within 0.09" of the surfaces of the chips

Bottom lapped:

Top with Stainless Steel screws - for those who want a lil flair with their dark:

And becoming one with nature.  Tried for some sunlight pictures:

You will, yes. More to the point, you ALREADY have MY interest.

I'm rather pissed at having to buy new SB/VRM blocks for the Dark. At least I can still use my existing CPU cooler.

EK hasn't indicated (that I can find, anyway) whether they'll make the other blocks for the Dark, and I don't want to wait some ungodly long time to get back to full watercooling. Subscribing to this thread.

I'll have a dark in a week or so... and I have calipers.  Let me know what you need and I'll see if I'm smart enough to figure it out.

Great.  It will be the as simple as I can make it, so I hope to bang them out quickly.  So far, the plan is to cool the VRM's, as the chipset I hear is only 10W and doesn't generate heat.  The VRM requires the most attention.  Someone correct me if I am wrong - I have been off the grid (@TG0437 to be more exact).

no idea.  Won't be expensive (at least I don't think).  I plan to make them as inexpensive & simplistic as possible

This is his SR-2,  probably his most known block and has had many developments. If you look through the whole thread you can see how it started and what they now look like. Quality I think is better, as the work is more personal. Where EK is just pumping them out mass production style.

All of his work or work in progress is in his signature.

As for the other question, he may PM you, but I would send him one to be sure you get a response. He does not talk price in thread.
He is away until the end of August.

Count me in if EK doesn't beat you it first. I definitely want something with a clear top.

My only question is that would it be possible to have a silver-color or black-color finish on the block itself or would I need to get it plated if I wanted something like that. Most of my other components are nickel with plexi top so copper would clash with the other blocks.

Can't wait to see what you do either way.

Interested in both the VRM and chipset block.

I didn't have plans for a chipset block at the moment.  The VR section was the focus of cooling efforts.  Not that a separate block couldn't be made, but the chipset doesn't really get hot.

Re:EVGA X79 DARK WATERBLOCK 2013/08/13 07:01:51 (permalink)
From personal experience, if there is absolutely ZERO air movement it  will get a little warm to the touch, but temps were always pretty good, as soon as there was a slight bit of air movement, I say slight as I had a really cheezy low cfm case fan handy I got it to room temp within 30 seconds.  Basically if you have the airflow that pretty much any descent (not great, just descent) case has, the chipset block stays pretty cool.  MUCH cooler than my X58 FTW3 did (before it went on water).

At some level it would be cool to have it on water too, but after my own usage of it, outside of "coolness factor" I don't see a need.  If Nate does opt to though, maybe he should make some kind of sig for it, like a "Cooled by NM_D" engraved onto the block :D

Its would be awesome, if the chipset block does happen, that the 'E' is engraved on it similar to how it currently shown on stock heatsink. I'd deffo buy that

I'll be paring this board with a 4930k by tax time.

So I am definitely interested in one and subbed to this thread.   I do have one question though, is this block just copper or are their plans for nickel plating?

I don't have the capabilities to nickle plate.  If you want I can send the block bare metal and bead blasted in prep for you to get it nickle plated.

Hi nateman_doo,

can you post screen from CAD software showing shape and position of inlet, outlet?
And if all will go as I think and I will get Dark, full cover would be nice, maybe chipset don't really need that good cooling but block will look nice on it. :]

Regards,
Greg
