I am looking to buy a router and I have a 25mbps download and even though I was an electronics salesman I never really understood routers. I am always direct modem connect person. I got a new cell phone and would like to connect to my jobs web site since I can only connect on the phone and not the pc. I was wondering with my internet speed do I have to buy a really expensive router?

not much.   25 MB/s isn't really that blazing.  You don't need anything expensive.  Most WIFI can keep up with that.    You are limited on internet speed by your modem speed- which you plug into the router.  (think of it as a main power supply split into multiple supplies- thats a router).   Connection between devices on hard cable are around 110-112 MB/s  (what I see for transferring between PC GB file sizes on ethernet)  well under what the internet service is providing.   So just get what your budget can afford.    Where you break  into a different price category is WIFI speed.    There all sorts of speeds and connectivity types 802.11 (n),(g),(AC).    It's normally broken down to 2.4 gz and 5 ghz and both are good in case one frequency is saturated in your area.  But as far as basic router principles,  you don't have to spend much.

What's your plan?  WIFI gaming?  PC to PC transfer?  Setting up a NAS?   using a game console?   Home automation?  Media server?  Streaming video?

pretty much what delirious said if you have newer modem it's wifi will get you full speeds only reason you would need a wireless router is if your wifi signal is weak in parts of the house it would boost it signal wise but 25meg is all you will get not mater what you use.

Some of the cheap ones now are pretty good really and should be overkill.

On a side note if your forced to rent a modem it might be worth seeing what the cost of a modem/router would be. Sometimes it can be the same cost. Also if you have a rental make sure about once a year it’s the latest model. Often they won’t tell you when they roll out a new model.

no, I have my own modem I used to have Comcast when I was married and for the price of renting we could have bought two of them.

out of 24,500 reviews, it has 4 stars.  89 dollars.  It will do all you need and won't break the bank.  I own this one for my business.  It can handle everything.   Pretty plug and play set up.  It will walk you through it.   I have two night hawk routers (another is my home router) and they have served me well.  But it's like canon and nikon,  Opinions vary

But a single eero wireless router. $199 and it's very easy to expand. It's also so easy to configure with the app. Range is awesome too.
