picked up a used GTX 580 for my old x58 retro box, installed it and went through all the steps of installing the drivers and ran some benches, then things got strange, the screen would just shut off and/or windows would crash. thinking that maybe the drivers, i removed them with DDU, booted back into windows and install the drivers again, this time almost as soon as the drivers load in windows the screen goes black and it eventually reboots. it ran fine while on generic vga drivers, so i took the 580 and installed it in my new rig, boots fine, run fine, no black screens or crashes. all the benchmark and stress test apps run fine.  so after reinstalling windows on the x58 box i put the 580 back in and it does the same thing, thinking maybe the board or other hardware was acting up i tried my 970 SSC, 950 SC and my old 260's in sli, all ran perfect in the x58 box. put the 580 in two other pc's and it runs perfect. the only thing i have not tried is replacing the psu in the x58 rig, although the other cards ran great without issue i'm starting to wonder if my trusty PC power & cooling 600w psu is dying, it meets all the requirements for the 580. any thoughts because im at a loss at this point.

Odd issue indeed. Doubt it's a psu issue since you were able to pass benchmarks with the 260's in sli.

exactly, the 260's are not as power hungry as the fermi cards but darn close. the 580 even worked fine in my HTPC that has a evga 500B PSU in it. im really at a loss, was thinking of upgrading my PSU in my main rig so maybe ill just wait till then and try that PSU in the x58 and see if it makes any difference.
