I have a X99 Classified and I'm looking at the new M.2 drives from Samsung.

Are they compatible with my motherboard?

The 950 Pro works just fine in my X99 Classy, so unless Samsung changed the NVME standard then the 960 should work fine as well.

The interface is listed as: PCIe 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.1

Just making sure my M.2 slot is x4 (can't find that info in my MB manual)

You'll want to grab a PCIe adapter for any M.2 SSD PCIe 3.0 x4 since the M.2 interface on the X99 Classifieds is unfortunately only PCIe 2.0 x4.

Use this Associate Code at your checkouts or follow these instructions for Up to 10% OFF on all your EVGA purchases:

If this m.2 drive is for pleasure (gaming) and not an IOPS intensive database server you will see no difference if you use the onboard m.2 or a PCIE 3.0 adapter - http://forums.evga.com/EV...ad-Times-m2556132.aspx

And if someone doesn't believe the work that I and other reviewers have done, then I challenge you to do the work and show us the results.

Challenge in what form: pistols, rapiers or something in between? :D

Seriously tho. HarryD. You can get Kingston Hyper Predator X (or whatever it's convoluted name is) M.2 which works in Gen.2 mode for less without need for adapter, but of course it's up to you. For gaming it makes no difference whatsoever . It's available right now unlike 960Evo/Pro. Also betting good money that price will be very competitive compared to brand-new NVMe devices from Samsung.

If you do get the 960 Pro M.2 Drive, and it works on your X99 Classified please post your success. I did not have success with this chip, and have since returned it. Yes, you may have better luck with the 950.  I'm guessing there needs to be another BIOS update for the Classy Board and/or a Samsung Magician update for this (960 Pro) chip to be compatible with the Classy board.
I've been waiting and watching the boards for one successful install of the 960 Pro M.2 SSD on the X99 Classified. Still waiting....

Good to know. I'm on BIOS version 2.03. Have you asked in the forum what the issue might be?

Have you seen the driver for the 960 Pro/Evo: http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools.html

Awesome, was waiting for somebody to have success with this drive on the Classy MoBo! Glad to hear it! Although I tried the 960 Pro. Don't think there would be a difference in compatibilities.
Now, if you don't mind. What did you have to enable and disable in BIOS? Did Windows recognize the drive right away? Are you using Samsung Magician 5.0? Does your drive show up in BIOS as PCIe 3 X 4?

Any info would be helpful. I've since returned the 960 Pro M.2 drive. I wasn't sure if it was a compatibility issue, or the drive was defective. Beginning to believe the latter. So this may be encouraging news. Maybe be looking to try again and purchase a new drive.

Unfortunately it was only recognized as PCIe Gen. 2 x 4
The option to make any adjustments in the bios are grayed out.

Is there a big performance difference between PCIe gen 2 and gen 3?

I also followed this guide to install the evo 960

Wow nice bench! I heard there isn't much of a difference (noticeably) on the speeds between Gen 2 and 3. But I also read, that you can get Gen 3 on the X99 Classified. Not sure where, I don't remember. But I think there is a way. Again, not noticeably different however.

I do want this drive to work on my board. I was very excited upon purchasing it. You can imagine my disappointment! I've only had my Classified board for 1 year. So, just isn't the right time to replace my board. Especially just for an SSD drive, be it M.2 or otherwise. Besides, I am running out of drive space with four 2x5 SSD's already. Still a little nervous spending $400+ on another drive and getting same results. But your success gives me hope.

There's almost twice the difference in M.2 PCIe 2.0 to 3.0.  You can use the PCIe slots with a M.2 adapter to get the SSD @ 3.0 x4 speeds otherwise you're stuck with 2.0 x4 on the MB's M.2 interface.  Speeds will depend on which drive you get.  The fastest M.2 SSD is the 960 PRO PCIe 3.0 x4.

Here's an example of a benchmarked Samsung 960 Pro M.2 NVMe SSD (2TB).

Unfortunately it was only recognized as PCIe Gen. 2 x 4
The option to make any adjustments in the bios are grayed out.

Is there a big performance difference between PCIe gen 2 and gen 3?

I also followed this guide to install the evo 960

The difference only matters if you have a database server or absolutely require the highest read and write speeds for file transfers to an array that can keep up.

Game load times and Windows boot times are NO faster than a good quality SATA III SSD. Nope, not even the blazingly fast, latest and greatest NVME drive running at full bandwidth changes the fact that the system is bottlenecked by the CPU/RAM, the Windows file structure, and the fact that queue depths used in game loads are typically only 1 to 3 and not deep queue depths where NVME drives blow the competition out of the water (like a database).

yeah looks like GTXJackBauer is right about PCIE 2.0 vs 3.0 speeds

Summary of PCI Express Interface Parameters:

    • Base Clock Speed: PCIe 3.0 = 8.0GHz, PCIe 2.0 = 5.0GHz, PCIe 1.1 = 2.5GHz
    • Data Rate: PCIe 3.0 = 1000MB/s, PCIe 2.0 = 500MB/s, PCIe 1.1 = 250MB/s
    • Total Bandwidth: (x16 link): PCIe 3.0 = 32GB/s, PCIe 2.0 = 16GB/s, PCIe 1.1 = 8GB/s
    • Data Transfer Rate: PCIe 3.0 = 8.0GT/s, PCIe 2.0= 5.0GT/s, PCIe 1.1 = 2.5GT/s

And it looks like the onboard m.2 slot is pcie 2.0 only since is uses the PE5 interface on the motherboard. See below:

PCI-E Slot Breakdown PCI-E Lane Distribution (40 Lane Processor)

    PE1 – x16 (x8 if PE2 is used)
    PE2 – x8
    PE3 – x8
    PE4 – x16 (x8 if PE3 is used)
    PE5 – x4 (Gen 2 only, 4 lanes pulled from PCH)
    PE6 – x8

PCI-E Lane Distribution (28 Lane Processor)
    PE1 – x16 (x8 if PE2)
    PE2 – x8
    PE3 – x8 (Slot is *NOT* functional with a 28 lane processor.)
    PE4 – x8
    PE5 – x4 (Gen 2 only, 4 lanes pulled from PCH)
    PE6 – x4

I am going to try putting my evo 960 m.2 in a pcie adapter card and see if I can get PCIE 3.0 going. If I get it working I will provide benchmarks.

I put the evo 960 m.2 in a pcie 3.0 adapter card and ran another benchmark. Here are the results:
