Hi all,

Just got an old X58 SLI E758 from my friend. It works fine with an i7 920 comes with it, but won't POST (stuck at FF code) with ANY other CPUs that I have in hand. I've tried W3530, W3565, L5520, even i7 930 and 920, All of them stuck at FF.
I have update the BIOS to 83.
I know it may need mod to work with Westmere but why it stucks FF even with another i7 920 with same S-spec?
Any ideas what happened?

Thanks!

I'm thinking something is up with the board itself. No way that many cpu's are defective.

The only thing I can think of is for you to reset the BIOs. Try another CPU and see if it fails.

Reset or remove cmos battery won't help, and I don't believe all other CPUs are bad. I think I actually had those CPUs working on other boards.

I found my problem:
Few resistors/transistors are damaged/missing in the back of the board. R905 and R906 were obviously hit and they touched each other, R913, R935 and Q68 are missing.
I tried to resoldered R905 and R906, and leave the other 3 components, the board is now able to boot with other CPUs. It also boots with a Westmere with the R538->R539 mod applied.
It is still unknown why it still worked with original CPU for years.

My next question is, anyone knows the spec of my missing component?
They are R913, R935 and Q68 on E758 rev 1.1 board.

evga still provide bios image in download center in ISO format. You can boot with that image and follow steps on screen. But in my case I just decompress the bin file and programmed with a CH341A programmer.

it's a bootable disc. Burn it and boot with CD, or use UltraISO to decompress the boot image (bif file) from the iso file, you can then see awdflash and bin file in it.
