When you remove the cooler you should clearly see the imprint of the edges of the elements on the PCB. When the edges aren’t visible you have no or bad contact. The contact can also be too good. You can observe that when you check if the motherboard/graphics card is severely bent in the area of the thermal pad. In extreme cases you can have a direct contact with the elements and that may lead to short circuiting your hardware.

Can we get an update on this? I need to put my air cooler back on my 3080 XC3 and need to know what thickness pads to use because the putty tore when removing the air cooler initially, so I did a good cleaning and removed all the putty.

Good day,

While talking about thermal pads and the Hybrid kit. Do you know if the VRAM heatsink that sits on top/around the cold plate is supposed to have thermal paste between the heatsink and plate?
The hybrid kit comes with a small tube of thermal compound, but there are no instructions to use it. 
I ran across this photo and was wondering if the compound should be applied here (see attached)

Yes mine came with thermal paste on the areas between the extra copper plate and the actual cooler.
