So, my Asus PG279Q 1440p needs to go in for RMA.  Looking into picking up something new since I'm sure it's going to be weeks before I get it back and I can't survive on my 24" 1080p Dell.  Had been thinking about the 34GN850 LG and just getting rid of dual monitor, would be running on a 2080 Super FTW3 for now, possibly the rumored high VRAM 3080 later down the road.  Also debating a 27GN850 for half the cost though and dump my dell when the Asus replacement comes back and use the Asus as my second monitor because both LG support HDR gaming.  Thoughts?  I'm slightly worried about driving the extra pixels with the 2080 super (about 5 mil vs 3.6 on the 27").  I would not be using the second monitor to support dual monitor gaming, just using the 2nd monitor for stuff like looking up things, browsing websites, etc. while gaming on the other one.  It's still a lot less than the 8.5 mil of 4K though.  Thoughts?
 
edit:   Of course, I could get a vertical dual mount and stack the Asus above the LG ultrawide, but lets just assume I don't actually do that for now.

Are you happy with the current performance of your card and monitor (other than the fact that it needs to be RMA'd)? You'll definitely take an FPS hit when you add the extra pixels, so if you're not getting acceptable frame rate now you might not want to go to an ultrawide. But if you play specific games that already get great FPS you might enjoy the benefit of a wider view more. If you're on the fence but have the money you could always buy one to try it out and return it if it's not enough of an upgrade. The 27GL850 is also a nice panel, but the HDR performance still isn't anything like what you can get on a good TV.

Thanks, yeah I know it won't hit movie HDR performance, but Hardware Unboxed seemed to think it was workable for gaming and I'd actually be doing the new 27GN850 vs the older GL.  Seems like essentially a non ultra-wide version of the 34GN850 and 1/2 the cost.  I've definitely been happy with the size/performance of the 1440p 27" so far.  I mean bigger would be nice but I wasn't planning on anything near 4K until I had at least a 3000 series GPU.   Starting to sound like maybe I should just go with the 27 and save $500.
 
Edit:  The only game I have any real FPS issues in right now is the new MS Flightsim, but in that case the low FPS points are due to the main thread being maxed on the CPU, not a GPU limit.

Well ordered the ultrawide. I tested flightsim at 130% render scale to simulate the extra pixels and didn’t have a performance hit at least as far as lows so I think I’m good. Also planning to keep the 27 when it comes back. I think I have room for it.

Really like it so far, and the extra 1.5mil pixels didn't seem to really bother my FPS lows in Flightsim 2020 much.  Maybe 1-2 in a worst case situation if that. (so like 32-33 vs maybe 33-34)
 
Edit: MSFS 2020 was the only thing I was nervous about.  Everything else I have plenty of headroom in.

Great! I'm glad you like it and the performance hit wasn't too bad. I was skeptical at first of the benefit of an ultrawide but it's a nice improvement in games that support it.

Yeah I was quite interested in them for flightsim to get more of the cockpit in view. This definitely accomplished that. 

Ultrawide is the way to go, get rid if those bezels.

One thing to note about ultrawide is the software support for snapping things easily into place. Power toys fancy zones is free.
There are others that are paid for, display fusion I've been eyeing but waiting for a sale

Man I am loving this monitor so far.  It's great for flightsim.  I can keep my standard view zoom in the cockpit and see pretty much the entire autopilot panel in the main things I fly in such a way as to not have to turn my "head" in the sim to get to things.  Allows me to work the autopilot while keeping the view totally lined up with the runways for takeoff and landing.  There's definitely  more distortion at the edges from the fisheye effect the sim gives when zoomed out in "spot plane" type view, but that's not an issue with the monitor itself.  I need to fire up some Civ on this next.  That extra space is going to be amazing I suspect.
 
edit:  My Asus 27" is now at Asus for RMA.  Probably going to run it vertical when I get it back along side the new ultra-wide.  Not sure completely on that, but it will definitely fit the desk better if I do.  At the same time, they're both the same height so I could run it in standard orientation and it should look pretty clean still especially vs my old 24" 1080p next to the 27" 1440p setup lol.
