I have an LGCX48 with a MSI Ventus 3090 and really just wanted to say thank you to all the posts here. Definitely some frustrating setup, mostly on the LG side. Short version:
  • Latest Nvidia drivers solved the crashes, and LG firmware applied
  • Turning off Instant Game Response solved black flicker issues
  • 10 bpc RGB full (was on the 4:4:4)
  • Learning how to make your HDMI input a PC port through the home screen is crazy buried! Turning off and on the TV again fixed any resolution cropping issues during setup.
The one thing that blew me away was really how amazing 4K 120Hz gaming is. I'm not really achieving 120 fps, but definitely in the range of 90+. And OMG the cursor smoothness was not expected. I've been gimping around with a 2080 Ti which through HDMI limited me to 60Hz though the card couldn't truly push past that anyways. Whole new world!

Glad to hear, if you learn anything new too - would love to hear your experience, we're still figuring all this out !

I found that a DDU utility uninstall from safe mode, and fresh install of latest Nvidia drivers, plus Aldur80's turn on/off - completely eliminated the flickers for me across all games.  might be worth trying that... It's been working great now for 2 weeks since doing that.

BTW - your point on the mouse cursor is significant! - 120hz is a major different over 60, dragging apps, cursor, website page scrolling etc... such a better desktop experience.

Keep in mind that turning off "Instant Game Response" mode turns off G-sync. Although G-sync won't show that it's off in the Nvidia control panel until you start a game.

I was getting the same flickering issues with "Instant Game Response" mode that you were. Simply turning it off and back on every time I was about to start a game fixes it for me.

Are you sure? I don't believe I was experiencing anything but silky smooth gameplay (around 90Hz)

Nice. It's still literally new for me -- just installed and configured last night. Will get to game some tonight. But don't yet have much time under my belt. I'll also add that I bought cheapo 8K HDMI cables from Amazon (cablematters.com brand) and they are fine. Digital cables either work or don't work, I saw a lot of posts talking about this.

One problem that I have now with my 65" CX - On power on for the TV, I get black screen flickering that happens often (once or twice every couple seconds), or sometimes not very often (once a minute or two). This is with the .26 firmware, I did NOT have this with the .25 beta firmware. A workaround has been to disable Instant Game Response in the All Settings / Additional Settings menu (it's still enabled, and has the pop up showing that it is enabled, because I named the input PC).

Yep, absolutely positive. If you have a second monitor and can leave the Nvidia control panel open on that monitor. Try turning off "Instant Game Response" mode and starting the game. You'll see in the Nvidia control panel that the TV is no longer shown as a G-Sync compatible monitor.

As with digital cables, even if you get a picture, it might not work all the way. Some of the cables I got would show a picture, but HDR wouldn't work, or G-Sync wouldn't work. Some would give a picture, but I couldn't get 4k output.

I'm on 3.11.25 still and when I turn off "Instant Game Response" mode I get the message that "Instant Game Response" is launched, but when I start a game G-Sync turns off. If you look at Nvidia control panel after a game is launched, does it still show that the TV has G-sync enabled? If not then "Instant Game Response" mode isn't working.

Also, what happens if once the flickering start if you disabled "Instant Game Response" mode and then re-enable it?

I'll add a section in the first post about cable results.   so far I had 5 failed cables, and only 1 working.

Please share your specific cables that are working or not working and I'll update the OP.  For it to be "Working" it means ZERO issues. every game works, windows runs 4K full color with 32-bit 10 bpc @ 120hz,  there is never any flicker, all games launch FULLSCREEN and run without issues, artifacts.

Signs of cable failure: Unable to reach full windows resolution @ 120hz, games only run in windowed/boarderless but not full screen, there is flickering or occasional black screens, games crash or failing to start.

Working:
  • Monoprice DynamicView Ultra 8K Premium High Speed HDMI Cable, 48Gbps, 8K, Dynamic HDR, eARC, 6ft Black - Product # 31231

Failed:
  • Monster UHD Platinum Fiber Optic HDMI Cable - 15ft - VIPRB-HDMI700HD4M
    • Full Screen RDR2 fails on Vulkan, Tomb Raider Crashes at launch.
  • AmazonBasics Nylon-Braided 4K, 18Gbps HDMI to HDMI Cable, 10 Feet
    • No 4K 120hz Desktop resolution, no games run 4K
  • 4K HDMI Cable 10 ft - Atevon High Speed 18Gbps HDMI 2.0 Cable - HDCP 2.2-4K HDR, 3D, UHD 2160P, 1080P, Ethernet - 28AWG Braided
    • No 4K 120hz Desktop resolution, no games run 4K
  • Twisted Veins HDMI Cable 8 ft, 2-Pack, Premium HDMI Cord Type High Speed with Ethernet, Supports HDMI 2.0b 4K 60hz HDR
    • No 4K 120hz Desktop resolution, no games run 4K
  • Generic HDMI cables
    • Mixed results but none of them worked for games, only a few let windows run 120hz.

And here I thought I was working around the damn black screen flickering that is getting worse on .26. So, bit of a back story - after updating from .25 to .26 I wasn't getting this issue. Then it started happening only sometimes when I turn the TV on, and I found that turning HDMI UHD Deep Color on and off fixed it, then later I had to do it twice. This morning that didn't work at all, so I tried another suggestion of turning off the Instant Game Response and turning it back on. It still flickered.

This might be a byproduct of me starting to run my 3090 working folding@home full time over night - these drivers are still spotty, and I sometimes see that afterburner is all funky town graphics (indicating a driver failed and recovered).

Just for shrimp and giggles, I am going to get a new cable to test - I still think that it's a driver and or TV firmware (since .25 worked fine), but it won't hurt to have a second 8K cable.

I would put another section with the "Mostly Working" title. For example, the 30 foot optical 8k monoprice cable mostly works for me. All I need to do is turn "Instant Game Response" mode off and on before playing a game to get g-sync to work properly, everything else works perfectly fine. And it's the only long optical cable that I found that works that well.

Dang, that sucks. Thanks for reporting it though. I'll stay on .25 for now then. Maybe things will be better in .27?

The Gsync stutter at 111-120 FPS is fixable and being addressed by LG it looks like - before the end of the year, so not as quickly as the previous roll out.

New to this thread, so I’m just starting to explore this with my LG 65C9AUA. Apparently this can support 120Hz 4K G-Sync with a firmware update to 04.90.33. I’m currently at 04.80.03 and I don’t know how to get the required update. Another big problem is my inability to get a 3090 FTW3 Ultra, however I’m hoping my notification will come soon and solve that issue.

Will this firmware 04.90.33 update be available online?

On the topic of cables, I had a heck of a time getting my 4K UHD player to play HDR content without “sparklies”. The only cable I found that works is a “ECHOGEAR 8ft Braided HDMI Cable - 4k & HDR Compatible” I got from Amazon. It’s supposed to support HDMI 2.1 (48 GBPs), and I can say it definitely solved my sparklies issue. Don’t know if anyone else has tried this cable, but it’s the one I’m going to try when I can get my 3090 and figure out how to update my C9’s firmware...
