its possible they want to bundle the PSU with the kingpin because of all of the 3090 KPE failures and this one has been specifically tested
What 3090 KPE failures? I thought all the EVGA 3090 failures were with the FTW3-based cards?
My first 3090 KPE died within 2 days, no significant overclocking, just running the card. Earlier this year.
Sorry to hear.
May I ask what was the reason it died? Did EVGA provide a reason or do you have an idea as to why?
I thought Kingpins weren't susceptible to the transient power spike issues encountered on other 3090s, or are they?
I never had a new world problem with my kingpins. however...
I had not one, not two, but three kingpins die on me. Two were power failures and one was a hybrid pump failure, all on stock bios. The two power failures failed at boot with a strong burnt odor and a OLED "low voltage" warning. there are many people that had the same thing happen but there is a lot of reluctance to talk about because of concerns on RMA denial, competency in the process to convert to water cooling, wishy washy product availability etc. I even have videos of it happening that I can dig up and thats just with my rigs
That sucks.
Were they dead on arrival or did they die after many weeks/months of use?
I wonder whether these power failures are design problems with the card or simply a manufacturing issue with the way they were assembled and put together.
all of mine that died went quickly, within 1-2 weeks. 1st was a pump failure at the 2 week mark, the card never actually died - just became inoperable. The 2nd and 3rd died and died very quickly - just a few days. in fact, the 3rd died before the 2nd advance RMA even got back to EVGA. both 2 and 3 had a strong, temporary burnt odor coming from the back the card, no GPU output, machine otherwise boots fine, OLED reports low voltage warning. the 4th has been going strong and was converted to HC. i suspect it was an assembly or solder issue but I didn't get specific feedback on root cause. I have the 10 year warranty so when it finally dies, they'll send me a RTX 8010 in the year 2031 :P
also, I wouldn't hesitate to get another kingpin and block for a second, even at the higher MSRP. unfortunately, my Q3 pipeline completely collapsed in the past few weeks and I have to put vanity purchases aside for now. stay safe out there.
